Diet Special - a Scoop of Cottage Cheese

Mamas & Papas-

I've never known my mom to diet. She grew up in the middle east, cooked, ate and served middle eastern cuisine, and served the same to us. She is petite, and stands 5' tall and has weighed roughly 125lbs +/- 5lbs her entire life. I've inherited her good genes, and food sensibilities. Lots of veg, brown rice or whole wheat pita, meat as a garnish, not as the main event. I stand 5'1" tall, and weigh 125 +/-5lbs. I do remember though, as a child of the 70s, that when eating out with some of mom's girlfriends, they would order a diet special plate, and it would almost always include a scoop of cottage cheese. The diet special might be melba toast and canned peach slices and a scoop of cottage cheese. Or it would be a plate of iceberg, a few cuccumbers, tomato wedges and a scoop of cottage cheese. Sometimes it was a noodle dish, and marinara, a few overcooked mushrooms and a scoop of cottage cheese. (Ah the foods of the 70's, not very enticing) Is there anything special about this cheese? Is it really weight loss inducing?

Not looking to shift any weight. Just wondering.

Thanks for your insight.

What Bug said. I love cottage cheese with canned fruit, especially pineapple. I also love it with spinach in my lasagna.

It's low in carbs, has less saturated fat then harder cheeses, and high in protein. However, unless you make it...it's incredibly high in sodium. It's one of those...it's more healthy than...foods. Meaning, on a menu full of terribly unhealthy choices, it's the lesser evil. BUT, it's not even close to what I would consider a healthy food.

As far as I know, it's just an easy protein source added onto an otherwise carbohydrate (and sugar from the fruit) filled meal.
A protein (any protein) fills out the meal so it will keep you from feeling the hunger when the carbs and sugar wear off.
If you don't feel hungry for awhile you'll be less tempted to snack between meals, so it helps with the weight loss that way.

I remember my mom and the whole cottage cheese thing. I also remember the grapefruit diet! Funny since I love cottage cheese and grapefruit now! Wish I had some now!

I remember those diet specials too, and have to admit that I love cottage cheese with canned fruit on the side. For me it's a special treat, not a diet thing. But to answer your question - no, nothing special at all about cottage cheese. I think it was just the lack of creativity in the 70s that made every single place offer something similar. Low fat cottage cheese is a good protein source without too many carbs, but there are tons of other choices that are as good or better.

I LOVE most cheeses but I cannot stand cottage cheese, at all! I don't know if it's the texture or what but it's always given me the heebie jeebies, LOL.

I once heard someone say that, if you want to lose weight, the one thing you DON'T want to eat is cottage cheese! Why not? Because that's what all the overweight people eat, so there must be something fattening about it! :^)

I've never been a cottage cheese fan (although I like other cheeses), but my mom used to *love* it. I understand it is a really good protein source.

I remember those "diet specials," though, and they didn't give enough nourishment to get through half a day. They were often part of the ever-popular starvation type of diet.
