Did Your Hair Fall Out?

Hi ladies! I just had my first baby 3 1/2 months ago, and lately I've noticed a lot of my hair falling out! It's not noticeably thinner yet, but I swear it will be soon with the amount of hair I see falling out of my head. It's really starting to freak me out. I have heard some people say that their hair fell out after giving birth. I stopped nursing about a month ago so I am wondering if it is related to that.

Did any of you have a similar experience?

What can I do next?

Hi A., don't worry it is perfectly normal, I had the same thing happen to me, it lasted for about 3 months, I have very fine hair to begin with so I really freaked out when I'd see all that hair in the sink every morning. From what I understand is that when you are pregnant your hair stops the shedding process that is why many womens hair get's really thick etc. then after you have the baby or stop nursing the whole shedding process starts again and you lose all that extra hair and then some. give it another month or so and if it doesn't stop, I'd see your doctor just to rule out anything with your thyroid.

Hi A.,

Someone had posted this question before so I will just copy/paste my last response... don't worry, you are not the only lucky one to experience this!!

I lost TONS of hair from about 3 months postpartum until probably 6 months. I had very long hair and lots of it, half way down my back. I've heard it is normal for some women, I had a lot of complications with my delivery but the doctors related to my other complications said it was hormones and that it just happens (I also had night sweats which they said were hormone related and both of these symptoms also happened to my SIL).

Before my hair started falling out it "hurt" like when you have it in a ponytail for too long and that happened for a month or so. I thought my hair would never stop falling out and that I would surely go bald. I think I probably had about 40% hair loss - no lie, and I remember the days of my hair tie wrapping more times around than it ever had :(. My son is now 10 months old and my regrowth is about 6 inches long. I cut my hair in a bob and you can't even tell anymore. I just told my self that I would have a "bad hair year" which sucks because my hair is (was) one of my best features... oh well!

I would suggest getting a good hair cut, people kept telling me that and I thought they were crazy, but it really helped. If you want to discuss it further feel free to send me an email!

Good luck and don't stress about it, it's just hair and it WILL come back!

Yes, I had what seemed like a ton of hair fall out after the birth of both of my daughters. With both of them it started right when my maternity leave ended, which was about 3 months of age.

Oh, I had the same thing happen with my kids. It was most noticeable after my first, it just seemed to come out in handfuls! It does stop after a while, but it's scary sometimes! Don't worry, it'll come back and you'll have beautiful hair again. Having babies reeks havoc on your body, doesn't it! Ah, but they are so worth it!
