Hi Moms,

I've had neck issues for 5 years (I fell when I was 8 months preggo and hit my head/neck on my fishtank, ouch)... I've been to physical therapy in the past for my neck, and I'm going back again.... I was told by a few people that I should start going to a chiropractor, but to be honest, I'm nervous about going... I've heard some horror stories... My MRI's are normal, but I have a lot of pain in my neck.. My pt says I have a very skinny, weak neck and I need to build it up...I have a lot of issues with dizziness and headaches also..
Stories?

What can I do next?

I can say enough good things about my chiro. He has LITERALLY changed my life for the better! My 4.5 year old son LOVES going and gets excited when I say we're going to see Dr. Don.

I lived with wicked pain for decades and had no idea I could actually feel GOOD.

A good physical therapist also does wonders!

A good chiropractor will explain what he can do for you and what he cannot. My spine lack curvature in the mid back and while it gives me an extra inch of height the vertebrae tend to lock together there causing pain and stiffness. Mine explained that he can relieve the pain by loosening the vertebrae but that the way I was born is not something he can fix permanently. I go for monthly "maintenance care" and love it. I have, however, in the past been to chirorpractors that would try to get you to come 3x per week, or that pushed vitamins or other products they sold. I would ask around and get one that is recommended by some friends. I hope you feel better soon.

I don't know where you are hearing horror stories :) The reason chiropractors pay about $2000.00 in malpractice insurance vs 250,000 that medical doctors pay should tell you something. These figures come from actuarial tables that are SPECIFIC and ACCURATE. You KNOW an insurance company would be charging more if they could.

I went to a chiropractor for the first time about 19 years ago for the first time. I was amazed at the results. We have been in chiropractic care ever since. Our immune systems are stronger and we are healtier than ever. I was the kid in and out of the hospital all my life and now I rarely get a head cold. The science of chiropractic is God given where the allopathic medicine is a synthesizing of what we were given.

My advice is to find an upper cervical specialist that considers himself a principled chiropractor. You can go to www.upcspine.com and find one in your area. If you can't I'm sure I could get a referral to give you. Interview them like you would anyone working for you. If they understand the immune system you're in the right place.

God bless!

I went to a chiropractor years ago for a knee injury. He did a scan of my body the first time I went, and he found a bone out of place that affected my step when I walk. He adjusted it, worked with my knee, and re-aligned my back and neck. I felt like a ragdoll every time I left his office, but the results were awesome!! I highly recommend it.

I love my chiropractor but it is VERY important to have the right one. Ask on Facebook/your friends via e-mail/people you work with....EVERYONE, and get some great reviews before you even consider that person. I've had 2 and they've both been terrific but there are lots of yahoos out there so be careful.

It needs to be an ongoing thing, you have a spine your whole life! The spinal column houses your nervous system, which controls every bodily function. If a vertebrae is out of alignment, it can cause the brain's signals to not reach other parts of the body. Pain is the last sign that something is out of place.

It takes a while to retrain the spine (thus the reason it can hurt worse befote it gets better) and surrounding musculature, then maintenance to keep it in place. It's like Only getting your teeth cleaned when you feel like it but expecting them to stay nice, or getting oil changed when it runs out, or working out once a year and expecting to stay in shape!

A good chiropractor won't pressure you however, but tell you what will work and let you decide what's best for you. Insurance covers most of it these days, and the office I work in at least never charges people too much (too little in fact I think)!

Along the lines of the nervous system, it also helps the immune system stay intact, which is why people who go regularly get sick less often and less severely as well. Plus it's the only thing that works for my headaches and lower back disc problems.

I have been going to a chiropractor since I was 17, I am 41 now. I had scoliosis in my back. I go now for well visits (along with my daughter) and for some lower back issues (myself). I prefer a holistic chiropractor. But they are much like regular doctors that you might need to try different ones to find one that works well with you. I found my most recent chiropractor on Holistic Moms Network.com.

I've had neck and back issues all my life and I've had PT which helps and lots of doctors which mostly didn't help. I've had chiropractors that were great and others that were horrible. So it's like just about everything else, there are good ones and bad ones. Ask around and get others opinion on which chiro. is good and how they help them. I've been helped by some really terrific chiro and it made all the difference. Sending you the Best

The three chiropractors I've seen have all been helpful for back pain. I have never had a neck injury like you describe, but I would sure try it.

I had two kids back to back (They are 16.5 months apart) and it really took its toll on my neck and back muscles so much that it was causing terrible headaches daily. I went to a chiropractor at the suggestion of my obgyn and made some progress in relieving and correcting the problem. However, after a year of not being completely better, I went to a physical therapist at the suggestion of my internist. The physical therapist brought me out of the problem within a few months-that was a year ago. I still get headaches occasionally, but I just do the exercises she taught me and it usually helps right away. I do think the chiropractor was helping, but they tend to have the mindset that their care is an ongoing preventive measure you should do for the rest of your life, whereas, physical therapy gets you in and out and on your way. At least that was how I felt in my particular case. I am not at all trying to knock the chiropractic profession. I do think they provide many health benefits, but like any other profession, you have to look around for the good ones. That is why I asked for recommendations from my doctors who I trust completely.
Also, much of my therapy with the physical therapist was deep tissue massage, so I tend to hit up the local massage school on a regular basis to work out the kinks! Hope this helps!

I went to two different chiros (same clinic, one left, the other replaced him) with good results.

I think the 'trick' is to go to someone who is referred and reputable. The clinic I used is the one my son went to for craniosacral work when he was younger, and my midwife recommended the pediatric chiro. I later found out that quite few friends were also going there too, to see different docs.

The only time I ever went to a chiropractor, he came highly recommended, and I ended up in worse pain than before. I will never let another one touch me.
