My jaw does this sometimes. Could it be that? Usually when I chew too much gum. It's just a sharp pain in my jaw for just a few minutes, then it's gone.
I don't know if being pregnant has anything to do with it, but last night I woke up atleast 10 times in a lot of pain. The entire right side of my mouth, only the right side was hurting so much. I can't figure out if it was my teeth or my gums, or both but i can't even describe the pain. I had to sit up each time for about 5 minutes for it to fade away but then not too much longer after I would lay down again it would happen again. It's really strange that it's only the right side of my mouth, but whatever it is it's killing me. I didn't know if this was something with my teeth or if maybe it had something to do with the pregnancy. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi K.. I used to be a dental assistant for about 7 years and it sounds to me that you might need to have a root canal. If it is waking you up in the middle of the night, I would go and have it checked out. Sometimes with those, you can't pinpoint a tooth yourself, so it is best to see your dentist right away or you could experience something a lot worse. Also, if you are having symptoms of that side of your mouth have a dull ache, throbbing pain, to where it seems that it has a heartbeat of it's own, those are also signs of needing to have this procedure. This all could be a false alarm, but I would call in and get an emergency appointment today.
I got all types of weird symptoms going on while I was pregnant, so it could be.
If it happens again, see your Dr. b/c I too have tmj and it gets worse over time.
In the meantime, fill an athletic cotton sock with white rice and tie it and the end. Microwave the sock for about a minute or 2 and put in on your face where it is hurting. Or you can refridgerate it too if that helps better.
It may be TMJ. I have that (nothing to do with pregnancy although you may be sleeping differently or grinding teeth now). I've had it for about 10 years, and sometimes it's worse than others. I was the same as you and couldn't describe where the pain was (jaw, teeth, nose, head, ear). If that's what it is, you can go to your dentist for night guards (or they have those at Wal Mart, but I'm not sure how well they work).
Also, I get those pains when my allergies or sinuses are acting up, and it's almost always at night when I'm trying to sleep.
Sounds like you should see your dentist. It could be wisdom teeth. Could be a sinus infection of some kind. The best thing to do is see someone soon so the pain can be relieved asap and you can rest properly.
Hi K.!
My teeth were a complete mess when I was pregnant! I was told that all the vitamins and nutrients go to the baby and that your teeth take the beating for it. I know that my sister had the same problem all four times she was pregnant. I would go to a dentist. There are a lot of procedures that they can't do while you are pregnant, but they can help and pin point exactly what the problem is. I hope that it gets better. I used to wake up in tears in the middle of the night because my teeth hurt so bad and it was awful. Good Luck and Congratulations on the new baby!

Just a thought, as I have never experienced this as apregnancy symptom, but could you have a sinus infection?? My sister did, and she said that she felt a very similar type of pain. She actually went to the chiropractor first, and felt such relief that she canceled her dr. appointment and felt fine. She did say she had alot of drainage down the back of her throat most of the day, so it was clear that something was clogged. Best of luck! ~A.~
Yes, I had horrible tooth and mouth pain while I was pregnant. I have been told that pregnancy is very hard on your mouth and teeth. I woould suggest going to the dentist if you are not too far along and if you are ask them for some baby safe meds. I had my little boy 4 months ago and I have since had 3 root canals and I have to get my wisdom teeth pulled. I took advil for the pain and it didnt effect my baby ask your doctor what you can take. Hope you start feeling better.

Hey K.,
Pregnancy definitely can affect your nerves. I think I found a lot of parts to my body that I never knew existed while I was pregnant. I would also call the nurse at your doctor's office just to double check and see if they have any other advice or suggestions on what you might do, or what is happening.
Best of luck!

I had a lot of mouth sensitivity during my pregnancy- like brushing was near torture on some days! And that was one of my first signs I was pregnant with my second. But, I'd go with the dental asst. on this one & get it checked out. Sleeping while pregnant can be a pain...without add'l pain!
Good Luck!

Hi K.,
I bet you have a sinus infection--sounds crazy but I went to teh dentist because I was sure I had an infected cavity and it turned out that I had a really severe sinus infection that got into my jaw. Good luck!

No, I never had that happen. I recommend you call your OB/GYN at once to discuss it. I checked the March of Dimes website and it does mention one is more susceptible to infection of the gums b/c of the hormone changes, etc. If that's the case, a trip to the dentist is in order asap.
I've had a similar tooth pain (or what I thought was tooth pain) in the past. A quack dentist I went to told me I needed either a root canal or extraction after he took x-rays....I wasn't pregnant at the time. Anyway, after seeing another dentist, was told it was probably a SINUS INFECTION pressing on a sinus above one of my teeth causing the pain. After some antibiotics, the pain was gone! Glad I didn't have a tooth removed.
I'd check with your ob first before seeing a dentist.
