Diarrhea - Brookings,SD

I have a 13 month little girl who is on her third day with diarrhea. She is averaging 5-7 a day, so is not considered severe. She has some new teeth coming in, but they don't seem to be any worse than any other time. No temp. no vomit, is eating, but less than usual, she is drinking and I am offering pedi-lyte type drink often. Of course the everlasting runny nose. Anyway, she has never been to the Dr. due to illness and I am just wondering how long you would wait to get her in? I read that seven days of mild diarrhea is about the limit. Any thoughts?

What can I do next?

Be very careful using Pedi-Lyte... It could be that she needs to stay away from it for a while. you might be not helping it. I did the same thing to my son, he would drink anything eles, or eat, so I gave him pedi-lyte and thought that would help, but it landed me the ER. because he was very sick and dehydrated and I thought I was helping... So please be very careful with it... His better now but I only give him that 2x thats all... and if he still sick I give him 7up watered down...

I think that if she is eating and drinking I would not be too worried to rush into the doctor unless she is exhibiting signs of dehydration or weight loss. It may not be a bad idea to call the doctors office and see what they recommend. There is a very good chance that this all is being caused by some of those nasty teeth trying to push their way through.

Another thing to consider is whether she has been by anyone else exhibiting the same symptoms. In most cases of diarrhea they are just going to tell you to keep her hydrated and eating and it will just have to pass (literally).

Good luck!

I wonder if she's allergic to something that she's eating? Did you recently introduce a new food to her? Also, fake sugars (evil!) like aspartame, saccharine, splenda etc. can cause diarrhea and is something that they put into pedialite drinks

I wouldn't worry about it unless there are signs of dehydration or something that strikes YOU as serious (trust your mama instincts!) Her body is still trying to learn to regulate itself. If you do end up taking her to the Dr., make it clear that you are not asking for antibiotics unless she definitely has a bacterial infection!

I've taken my kids in a few times because the books said to after so many days or whatever, and mostly I've ended up irritated that we got unnecessary and ineffective medicine.

my kids' doctor always had us follow the BRATY diet: Bananas, rice, applesauce, toast and yogurt. it's easy on the digestive system. the yogurt has active cultures to improve the natural bacterias in the intestine.

My daughter had it too with teething. Our Dr. says whenever she has diarrhea to go for the BRATS diet - Banana/Rice/Apples/Toast - works great and it's easy food to have around. good luck

Runny stools are normal with teething. I never felt the need to run to the Dr. with something like runny stools ~ they are not damaging especially if the child is eating.

Give her stool "hardening" foods like bananas, bread and eggs to see if food will help to change their consistency.

Either way, unless she continues with runny stools for longer than a week, stops eating, runs a fever and cannot sleep, it is probably a slight digestive disturbance due to teething and her body will work it out.

My daughter is going through the exact same thing. I mean even the teeth..are you sure we are not talking about the same little girl? I called my doctor and he told me it is Rotovirus and it will last 5-7 days. If she does not want to eat it is ok but you have to really encourage the drinking. No milk of formula because it could be harder on the digestive track...juice, pedialyte, water..all good for her. Tylenol every four to six hours..a dose and a half he said...while she is awake do not wae her up. Oh and let it run its course. If she spikes a fever of 103.0 bring her in or call and then go to the hospital.

As long as she is staying hydrated, she's probably ok to go a few more days w/o seeing a doctor. And as long as other symptoms don't develop.

If it were me, I would call the doctor and describe the symptoms, and ask them "I'd prefer not to make an unnecessary trip. At what point to do I need to bring her in.?" Ask how many days with no change in symptoms before she needs to come in,and ask what new symptoms would indicate a need to bring her in. They should tell you all the common signs of dehydration, which I noticed were mentioned in a couple of the previous responses.

I would also recommend Desitin or some other diaper rash cream to help with her irritated bottom. And a warm water bath once or twice a day helps with the bottom too.

If she's not drinking enough, refusing liquids, then try giving her watermelon, applesauce, yogurt, any food that has a high water or gentle liquid content. Yogurt is a good one because it has calming effects on the digestive tract.

Sounds like things might be off in her digstive tract. First, put her on the b.r.a.t. diet. That means bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. Also, you may want to give her acidophilis. That will help her intestinal flora get back to normal. You can buy capsules of it and sprinkle it on her applesauce.

My 2 year old had this for 3 weeks this past winter! I took her in after about 7 days to the doctor and they did all sorts of labs only to tell me they couldn't find anything and it must be viral. We discovered it was, since we all had it, but that it was also aggrivated by milk. Since then we switched to vanilla flavored soy and rice milk. I was told this virus would run 7-10 days. If she runs a fever for more than 24 hours, I would call the nurse line for sure just to be safe. Hope that helps!

Medical or Activated Charcoal powder (found in health-food stores and sometimes pharmacies)-with no addatives. Mix 1-2 tablespoons in 8oz. water, stir well, let settle. Pour off the "gray water" into your bottle, sippy-cup or cup. Have her drink it. May be best if slightly warm. Do this after each incident of diarrhea. Works great for vomiting too! Visit www.buyactivatedcharcoal.com if you can't find any locally (they also sell Colic Calm which is supposed to be a great product).

Every time new teeth come in new symptoms may occur with a baby. Sometimes it could be diarrhea, sometimes it's a fever, sometimes it's vomitting, or lack of hunger. Don't worry it will pass. As long as she does not have a fever and diarrhea I would not worry about it.

We just finished a bout of this last week. It lasted about a week and I gave my little guy plenty of fluids, as he would take them. He wouldn't accept milk, so I went back to soy formula as well as pediatric Ensure (Target brand worked well). I know he lost some weight, but doesn't seem to be any worse for it, and his appetite is now improving. He's 17 mos. and there was no fever, apparent earache or such, so I just kept a close eye on him. He did vomit a couple of times, just after finishing a bottle, so I cut back on the amount he got at one time for a couple of days, too. Since the other kids got a similar illness, but at different times, I ruled out food poisoning. I think it's just a bad bug going around. A lot of our friends have had it, too.

My daughter, 15 months, just finished with a bout of loose stools that went on for well over 8 weeks!! I had her in to the doctor a few times and each time I got the same response - she's healthy, not having other symptoms - so there wasn't much they were suggesting. Just to watch it. She was also having at least 5-7 stools a day. Their poor little bottoms can't take all that so it's not just the diarrhea, it's dealing with the rashes they get. Boudreaux's Butt Paste works well, but I noticed it was looking a bit like a yeast rash so I was using lotrimin with Desitin and that helped to keep her clear. A bit of background on her - she has had ear infection after ear infection since November so has been on many different medications, and was also getting teeth. So, they thought that the medicines along with the teething could have been playing in to it. We were giving her pedialyte, and started giving her live-culture yogurt, apple juice, bananas (the diet you suggested above). I don't know if it was that that finally helped but she is all cleared up now. It just one day stopped. Not knowing what was causing it was a bit disheartening, but because she was still thriving I wasn't too terribly worried. Keep watching it though - hopefully she will clear up soon!!

Call your MD office and ask them what they'd like you to do. Too many people don't know that your MD office has an answering service 24/7. The people who answer can direct your call to your practitioner to help answer questions and make suggestions.
You can get a lot of advice from friends but those in the health profession have access to accurate and up-to-date info. I would NEVER give my child any form of charcoal without extensive research! just because it's on the net, in a pamphlet, at your health food store or where ever it's not ok to use with out medical advice.

You might try rice water (boil rice then strain out the rice and keep the water). This is an old home remedy but always worked for my son. He tended to have diarrhea with teething and also something the doctor called "toddler's diarrhea" - which basically meant there was no identifiable cause.

If you are nursing, do it often. Breast milk counts as a 'clear fluid', it won't make diarrhea worse like cows milk or formula. I would offer my son every couple hours at that age if he was sick. Probiotic can help keep the natural balance of bacteria in his tummy. I give my son bananas...lots of bananas when he has diarrhea. It really helps to firm the stools up. I hope this helps.

My 20-mo-old son recently had about a 10-day bout of diarrhea. But it was only once or twice a day. I talked to a nurse at the clinic and she said he may have the flu virus, but just give him the BRAT diet, make sure he stays hydrated, and it'll go away by 7-10 days. He was also teething at the time, so that may be part of it, although he never had diarrhea while teething before. If you have concerns, just call the clinic and ask what they say about bringing her in.

B.,
Try the BRAT diet for a few days.
Bananas
Rice
Applesauce
Toast
My boys are all teens and twenties now, but when they were little at the first signs of diarrhea I switched them to the BRAT. You can make a few substitutions, like (dry)cheerios or crackers, jell-o is good, clear liquids.
Stay away from most juices, but weak tea won't hurt (and tea has a natural chloride for little teeth). Stay away from diary!!
Good luck!

Curious - has she recently had any immunizations? I know we're in a minority group - had wanted to NOT do vaccinations - and waited from 6 mo. until 14 mo. to do so - and then, did the MMR and varicella combo - since she'd had no others in 8 months - and we won't do add'l ones for another year - we felt it was a 'good time' to monitor her responses - and yep,two weeks later noticed the reactions to the MMR - (had the swollen cheeks, redness, fever, irritability, and a rash) - and then a few days later, reacted to the varicella. Mild chicken pox! Poor thing. And I'd not wanted to vaccinate at all - but succombed after visiting with our pediatrician - ANYWAY - could she be having a mild reaction to an immunization that will end on it's own? I agree with all the replies - BRAT and introducing those helpful bacterias to her little digestive system.

Just be sure she's getting enough fluids or she'll get dehydrated. It can happen quickly. My doctor gave me a good guideline ... if your daughter pees at least once every 8 hours, then she's keeping hydrated. If she goes longer than that without a wet diaper, then she's not staying hydrated enough. Good luck!

I'm not sure if there is a "limit" and I haven't read all of the other responses (so someone may have already said this), but the big concern is remaining hydrated. If she is not wetting, or her mouth is dry (cracked lips, no saliva), then you would definitely want to get her in. And as long as she doesn't have a fever or vomiting she'll probably be ok for a couple more days.

The other thing you might want to make sure you have on-hand (if you don't already) is something to soothe her poor bum. ;) I know it just kills me when your poor kid has a sore butt from diarrhea and you know it hurts to clean them up but you have to do it :( Diarrhea sucks... Anywho..best of luck and hope your little one is feeling better ASAP! :)

I would make sure that she is getting plenty of fluids and eating mild foods (potatoes, rice, bananas)and no dairy. My son just finished a round of that, it only lasted 2 days for him. His started with a really high fever, then the diarrhea broke out. The pediatrician recommended Pedialyte instead of milk for a few days. You might want to call the Dr. to see what your pediatrician recommends, it might not call for a Dr. visit...but sometimes the phone call can help. Good luck!

My daughter just got over a terrible stomach virus a couple weeks ago. It started the first day with throwing up and followed with 4 days of diarrhea. There were bouts where I changed her 8 times in a half hour! I got some good advise from my sister (unfortunately not until the last day she was sick) she suggested the BRAT diet.
B-babanas
R-rice
A-applesauce
T-toast
This is supposed to help because everything is bland and easy to digest. One of the worst things you can give is milk (which is not always easy with a toddler especially if she's anything like my daughter)
I brought my daughter in to urgent care on day 3. I wanted to make sure she wasn't dehydrated. They were not concerned since she had had a wet diaper in the last 8 hours an she could still cry tears. They said the virus she has lasted an avaerage of 5-7 days. I would call your doctor after 7 days to see if they recommend bringing her in instead of just bringing her. Alot of times they have things for you to try first. There is nothing more frustrating than taking the time to go to the doctor and pay a co-pay just to have them tell you to keep doing what you are doing. :)

Our daughter has diarrhea right now too. She does have an ear infection but also the really runny nose. The doctor told us that the mucus draining from her nose when she sleeps into her tummy would be the cause of it. I would maybe take her in. We waited a long time and had no idea she had an infection. We thought it was just her teeth too. It probably is worth getting it checked out just in case.
