Diapers Leaking

Here's a weird question: My daughter is 22 months old and wears size 4 Pampers Cruisers and Huggies size 5 overnight diapers...Her diapers have recently started leaking--not from being too full, but from coming out of the sides. Normally, I would think she's getting too big and we should move up in size, but there's no way she's too big for size 4's...and her overnight diapers have also leaked a couple times. We also considered doing the potty training thing, but she seemed ready a few months back and after making some progress she completely lost interest and started refusing to sit on the potty--so I don't want to push her since she's still young. Also, we just moved, which was a huge transition for her and I don't want to complicate things. Has anyone else had similar diaper problems?

What can I do next?

with my daughter i use huggies and pampers, usually whichever i have copons for although i like pampers better. she is 6 months and in a size 4. I would go up in size. usually when they start leaking more than the occassional diaper i go up a size and it fixes it. don't go just by the weight recomendatikons on the package.

We've also experienced this problem with our 22 month old son. We had been using Pampers on him since birth with no leakage issues. We've now tried Huggies and Luvs but to no avail....both leaked! The only diapers we've had any kind of success with are the Walmart brand.

My son is 17 months old and in Size 6 Huggies. I have been looking everywhere trying to find the Size 6 Overnites. He was in Size 7 Pampers but the Huggies hold the leaks in much better. We have been getting leaky during the day sometimes as well. I am wondering if it is due to the heat and humidity or just my son running around more with the weather being nice

I never liked Huggies because of that very problem. They seemed to fill up very fast. I have had good luck with Luvs. Just make sure you're using the right size. She may be just a bit too big for the size 4. I've also had to limit fluids at nighttime for my almost 3 yo because he still isn't potty trained and if he drinks too much at night his diaper weighs about 10 lbs in the morning and leaks in front from sleeping on his stomach.

Like everyone said, different brands work differently on different kids, sometimes you just have to experiment. Also -- dumb suggestion, you probably do this -- you have to make sure the "ruffle" is pulled out, or the diapers leak. If you're not doing that, that could be the leak culprit. My husband and I did that with our first kid, couldn't understand why there was so much leaking. Sometime, you just have to wait till they fit the diaper. I found there were brief periods of time they were simply "in-between" diaper sizes -- to big for the small size, too small for the bigger -- and they would leak until they grew better into the next size.

I would try a different brand, to see how they fit -- are they snug around the legs ? i was never happy with pampers, and found the huggies worked better, and there are some cheaper no-name type brands that also have elastic around the legs. My youngest NEVER really got interested in potty training, then when I gave up and went at it, she didn't do very well, and she was in pull-ups through 1st grade. (Of course, we later learned that she had bladder problems, which have now corrected themselves, but that is probably not your problem.)

I'm with you on not forcing the potty issue. there's lots of time between now and kindergarten. :-)

Good luck !

Hi M.,

It sounds like the diapers aren't fitting your daughter correctly if they are leaking out of the sides. You may want to try getting a better fitting diaper, or put underwear on over her diaper to help hold it closed around the sides. We use the Babies R Us brand "Especially for Baby" diapers and they work great.

Try the Sam's club brand - I think they are "Smiles". BTW, my oldest was out of 4's and into 5's at 18 or 19 months. The weight on the package is a little off.

Also, make sure that you have a waterproof crib pad under her - you don't want the entire house to smell like old pee!

Good luck.

You are a smart mom and know your daughter. I definately would not try to potty train, with moving, it will be to much for her, plus, she most likely is not ready by what you say. I think we are potty training kids too young, but that's a whole other conversation. I know that around this age, my son's diaper did the same thing. He lost fat around his legs from being so active and the diaper did not fit right. I just figured out how to reposition the diaper so it is tighter where it leaked and no more leaks! Good luck.

I don't have all that much to add to what the others have already said.

But I will say this...DO NOT go by the weight on the packaging!!! My youngest son is barely 6 1/2 mos old and we just had to buy him size 5! Huggies. If I were to go by weight he would still be wearing size 3's. But they are entirely too tight on him, and now the same is happening with the 4's. My older two boys did the same thing. My middle boy (will turn 3 in Oct) grew out of Huggies 6's around the time he hit 2. He has been in Pullups since. He is now in size 3T-4T...and just starting the potty training process. My oldest didn't transistion to PUs until he was 3.
At the rate my boys are going...my baby will be wearing PUs at ONE.

We had issues like yours with the Cruisers, so I switched my son to the regular Pampers and haven't had a problem since. I think Cruisers are cut a little different around the legs, and that was where we were experiencing the leakage.

I had the same exact problem and I have tried every single brand. Right now the only brand that seems to work is the walmart brand (parents choice). Also what I do is give her nightime sippy, wait 15-20 minutes then change her diaper so she doesnt pee much. hope this helps!

Yes! Our 17 mo old leaks at night no matter what brand diaper we used! The only solution we found was to use a cloth diaper with a double microfiber insert. Crazy, I know. I was using Bum Genius diapers whenever we were at home most of the time but now I use Target generic diapers during the day and the Bum Genium with the double insert at night. Once in a great while she will still leak at night but that's only if I let her drink before bed time. She drinks so much all of the time and it is hard to cut back at night. Good luck!
I ordered the Bum Genius from Nicki's diapers:
www.nickisdiapers.com
And I also found some on eBay.

I have a 28 month old son and he showed interest and potty training a few months ago and now like your daughter doesn't show it at all. I had the same problem with diapers leaking and wound up changing him 3 times before he went to sleep. Pampers just came out with Ultra Absorbency Diapers in all sizes. They hold more and keep some of hte leaks at bay.

Could they possibly be a little too big? Sometimes when sitting or sleeping on the sides is where is bunches up a bit if they are a little too loose. If it won't be too tight in the waist I would try going down one size and seeing if that helps. Good luck J.

Hi! I had the same problem with both of my girls. You may want to try the smallest size in the "Goodnites" brand diapers/training pants. They worked WONDERS for both girls... especially my older one who was 4 1/2 before she started waking at night to use the potty... she would soak the entire bed when I put regular pull-ups on her but, for some reason, the Goodnites worked wonderfully!
