My 2.5 year old developed a diaper rash after a course of antibiotics. It wasn't responding to creams, going diaper-free, so took him to pedi who said he has a yeast infection and recommended antifungal cream. After a week of this, there doesn't seem to be anymore infection, he doesn't complain that it bothers him, but the redness on his butt is not fading. The skin is also flaky at times. He's been seen for this 3 times over the course of a week and the drs don't seem to think it's that bad, but I'm concerned because the redness is still there, looks like a discoloration on half his butt. Has anyone experienced this, and if so, what helped, and how long did it take for the redness to fade? TIA
It takes a while for skin to heal.
My youngest is ten so I can't remember anymore how long it took but it was over a month before the skin color evened out.
My son often had this kind of rash - he's got very senstive skin and a course of antibiotics can cause a mean case of the runs - which makes their little private area even more tender. My friend a pharmacist suggested OTC clotrimizol (used for yeast infections) and aquaphor creams applied together. You can get a store brand of aquaphor - I always get the tube variety as it's thicker.
That combo saved my now-teenage son's butt more than a few times.

If it was a yeast infection, then it could be an internal problem also (even for boys). Watch his diet and make sure he doesn't have too much sugar (including carbs). Consider giving him a probiotic yogurt or a probiotic.
Just keep on keepin' on with the 'no diapers' the air & keeping him clean will really help...I know alot of people disagree with me but plain ol' vaseline on the reddened areas will keep out moisture and help with the flaking...it works for my grandaughter who has ALWAYZ been prone to diaper rash and/or yeast infections, I used it on ALL my babies through the years when it was necessary...good luck...poor baby boy...I hope you both get some relief this can be a trying time (holidays) even without being sick!
i'd stay off dairy for a few days (give him rice milk) and see if that helps. we had a diaper rash like that but a little purplish and we were told it was an allergy. diaper free!!!!
Have you used additional lotion like Aquaphor on it to help it heal?
Try adding baking soda to his bathwater for a couple of days. It always helps my daughter's butt heal after a rash that gets out of control.
My daughter has battled yeast infections since she was 6 weeks old. I actually posted a question about probiotics for her a few months ago and didn't get the great recommendations you got - so I'm stealing your answers!! =D
When he's on antibiotics, avoid wipes - rinse them out so there aren't any chemicals left in them before you use them. Then, after EVERY SINGLE BM, (and after cleaning all the poo off of him with the rinsed out wipes) take a soft washcloth or paper towel (or rinsed out wipe) and put a small dab of soap (whatever you bathe him with) on it, work it into a light lather and wash his little butt. Dry well, apply any cream/ointment (athlete's foot cream or the **3-day** women's yeast infection cream or any prescription) and rediaper.
We all have yeast in our digestive tract. But, when skin stays moist and breaks down from the acids in runny bm's, yeast can colonize and create infections. It's really really important to wash the area with soap and water each time after a BM - wipes don't CLEAN or remove bacteria or fungi - only soap does that. (Got this tidbit from the Texas Children's Pediatric Associates website - my daughter's yeast issues are 90% under control now because of it.)
For really bad rashes on my daughter it takes about a week for her skin to completely heal and the redness to go away. But I always start bathing her with baking soda in the water which always helps it heal faster after the infection is taken care of.
Ugh! Yes. My 8 month old got a yeast infection, also after having had antibiotics. It JUST cleared up after weeks and 2 trips to doc. We used Nystatin.
Yes. My baby girl had a yeast infection. My ped gave us Diflucan, which cleared it up and it hasn't returned. But her little butt had a strange redness to it for a little while. IT eventually cleared up in a week or two.
