My poor baby has the worst diaper rash. Her tushy is raw and bleeding. Have been to the pediatrician who gave me a concoction of ointments to put on the rash and this is not even working. Looking for what worked for others. I feel so badly for her and am about to give up breast feeding if it doesn't get better soon b/c I believe it is caused by the acid in the breast milk. I know it is not dairy b/c haven't had any for 5+ days.

Thanks

I also breastfed my son and he came down with the worst rash! It was so raw his hinder was bleeding!! The sad part was as soon as I noticed it becoming red I started putting every cream under the sun on it. So my pediatrican reccomanded buying mallox (any flavor) and using a cotton ball aply to the bottom. The put a thin layer of aquaphor on that. Well the rash cleared up wonderfully. I then switched his wipes to unsented/sensitive skin (which also helped). I no longer use baby wash because that also dried his skin. I use dove soap, and always let him sit in his robe or now a towel for a bit after drying him off. Hope this helps :)

When my son was only a month old, when he developed a really scary rash, exactly as you described. He was raw & bleeding as well. This horrible rash lasted 3 whole weeks, even after he was diagnosed with a "yeast infection" & prescribed medication.
We tried several of the best ointments possible, including the most expensive!
After a lot of trial and error, I started thinking up my own ideas and mixed A&D Ointment (the cream kind) with Triple Paste and we also switched him to cloth diapers.
We later found out he was allergic to the chemicals in the diapers, and have had to buy him Chlorine Free diapers ever since. We have never seen that rash again!
Good luck to your precious baby & you.

Try not to use diaper wipes - they can actually hurt them more then help when they are breaking out. When my kids were bad I used a warm washcloth w/ every change - even if there is no BM just pee. Personnaly, I mainly use vaseline on my kids... but when they got really bad once (from antibiotics) I spoke to the pharmacist & he gave me a pink cream in a white tube... it is something you don't need a script for, but it is behind the counter (not sure why). Sorry, it's been a while & I don't recall the name - but it just had black writing on the tube & no pics.

My sister just had her 2 1/2 yr old to the ER for diaper rash a few weeks ago... she has always used Desitin Creamy on her, but the ER doc said they changed something in it & they have about 3-5 kids a day coming in w/ bad bleeding rashes & the only thing that "connects" the kids is Desitin Creamy. She is also a baby that used cloth diapers & my sister makes them for her - so that is the only thing that it could be. My sister changed creams & it started looking better the next day.

Also, my one boy couldn't wear Huggies diapers & my daughter couldn't wear Pampers... you know how stange it looks for a mom to buy both Pampers & Huggies in the same size at the same time every week - lol. But they both broke out in rashes if they were put in the "wrong" brand of diapers... and none of mine have done good in the "cheap" ones.

My kids really didn't have much issues w/ diaper rash when they were nursing, it usually started after that. I would try cleaning her bottom more often, change the brand of diaper & see if she starts to look better - then maybe chage the cream/ointment you are using on her (unless it's the Desitine Creamy - if so I'd stop that one now).

I wish you luck - hope she clears up quick!!! And congratz on the baby!

My 2 1/2 year old got a bad diaper rash from being on antibiotics and she bleed on her bottom and it was so red and raw she would scream when i would wipe her off.. But I mixed desitin(spelt wrong I am sure) and mylanta together made it into a paste and rubbed it into her diaper that is all I done for about a week.. Than before I knew it, it was clearing up it took about 2 weeks of using it to make sure that she was good and all.. That is what I tried and it helped out alot after every diaper change I used it...Put a thick layer in her diaper it will also help cool her bottom to where it isn't too hurtful.. Hope that helps!! Good Luck!!!

Maybe WELEDA OR BURT'S BEE WAX diaper ointment might work. You find them in a natural store.

The trick is to thoroughly dry the area before you put the ointment on. If not you'll be locking the moisture in and it will continue to irritate.

My newborn (he is now 6 weeks) had terrible diaper rash. I had read online to put breatmilk on it. And it cleared right up! I also was using cheapo diapers at the time. I switched to huggies and/or pampers and we havent had any trouble since.

W.,
My neice's daughter had these and a yeast infection. She used everything imaginable including Rx from the doctor. Nothing helped. She finally tried the Shaklee Diaper Rash Ointment I had sent her. It cleared it up immediately. If you are interested in it you can find it at http://www.shaklee.net/healthforlife. All the ShakleeBaby products are organic.
Hope your little one is feeling better soon!

Okay I can say I am almost considered an expert on diaper rash. My oldest daughter has had a diaper rash so bad before that I could only use cotton balls and water to wipe her tush. First of all, make sure it is not her diaper. My kids have very sensitive skin and they can only use Huggies. Also get some air to that little booty. Lay her on a towel and let her go. She could hardly make much of a mess being so little. Try doing it to a 2 yr old. I also use Desitin on my girls every diaper change even if they are not rashy. It is a general precaution I have to take. When Selena had her worst diaper rash ever(above mentioned), I put Nystatin, then Desitin and last of all cornstarch. It works. Nystatin is a prescribed diaper rash ointment that comes in two different variations. For mild diaper rash, i just use the one with the blue stripe. For really bad ones, I use the one with the red stripe. I know, I know I can't remember the name. Also DO NOT USE WIPES while changing her diaper. Use a washcloth. Even though we get the unscented, hypoallergenic wipes they will still irritate their bottom. Also make sure you pat her bottom dry with a tissue because if you don't you will be sealing the moisture on her bottom with the ointment. Also don't use the Nystatin every change, just every other change but always use the Desitin or whatever brand you prefer every change. You have to protect their skin. Also don't use your cloths, use hers. It should be washed with a mild detergent such as Dreft. I am not too sure about the breast milk. Breast fed babies have runny stools most of the time but it is still good for her. Good luck and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Also peds usually don't do much for diaper rashes just prescribe ointment. I know I have been through it too many times.

I would guess the diapers are the problem.. try cloth or switch to a different brand of disposables.

Desitin is the best cream for rash..it is thick and makes a good protective layer.. but if it is a yeast rash,, then you need some yeast cream over the counter vaginal yeast cream or "jock itch cream is fine for this.

Do not give up on breatfeeding.. that is not the problem.. switch diapers..

my son got a bad diaper rash when he was a week old and I couldn't get rid of it. I was calling my dr and felt at my wits end like you. He was also raw and bleeding from it. I felt like such a failure! What ended up getting rid of it was monastat 7 cream with A&D ointment over it with every diaper change for about 4 days and it was gone. It lasted about 11 weeks before I found something that worked. I tried all kinds of creams and ointments and it was the combo of those two that did the trick. I hope it's gone by now and that you've found something that works...but if not try this! Also homemade wipes work great. I used the extra soft paper towel (the kind that feels like cloth) with baby oil on it. I used a food storge bowl with a lid put baby oil and a little water in it and used those. Worked great! Kelt him bum moistened but not wet!

I have never heard of breastfeeding being the cause of diaper rash. A&D ointment after every diaper change worked for my first son. Bare bottoms in the sunshine helped a friend's baby. I cloth diapered my second son and found out that cloth diapered babies very rarely get rashes.

My youngest daughter has very sensitive skin. She used to get the WORST diaper rash. I tried everything on that kid. The BEST BEST BEST BEST (yes, it's that good!) diaper rash cream is Walgreen's generic version of Desitin. It's not that expensive either. If you don't have a Walgreen's drug store, then look for any diaper creme that has Zinc Oxide in it as the main ingredient. It should be something like 10% or 11.3%. The stuff is thick, white and covers like you wouldn't believe.

The problem that your baby is having is a combination of moisture and sensitive skin. Use the diaper creme to help when she pees. It doesn't wash off easily. Also, try changing the brand of diapers that she uses. She could have sensitive skin and be reacting to something in the diaper material. My daughter could only use Pampers. It sucked because I wanted to get the jumbo box of knock-offs from Costco, but I couldn't. As she got older and was more mobile, I was able to switch her. I had to make sure that the daycare that she was at did not "borrow" diapers from other babies (if she ran out) unless it was the same diaper. Yes, it was that bad - where 1 diaper made the difference.

I think with a combination of possibly changing the diaper brand and using the Zinc Oxide ointment, your baby's diaper rash will clear up in no time.

Good luck.

The best thing you can do is to let her air dry as much as possible. Put the ointment on and leave the diaper off. This will let her skin heal. Also, don't use baby powder until the skin heals.

As far as acid in the breast milk.... what are you eating? Are you eating alot of citrus or drinking alot of citris based juice? If she's not allergic to dairy, it may be something else. Otherwise, i've never heard that breastfeeding causes diaper rash.
