OK, its time to ask the experts. My son has had a diaper rash for 3 weeks. I have been using bag Baum, Lotramin and now the doc suggest adding a little cortozone cream 1% not working still bad. Oh yah I have been using Costco brand diaper since her was 3 months old ( not sure if that makes a difference), I changed his diet nothing but bland foods. I have tried Desatin in the past and found not even the extra strength did any good. Question: Is there anything that someone can suggest as far as an ointment that will help. His rash seems to have little dots and is very red and inflamed. Or just suggestion period I'm at my end with this rash thing.
Thanks for any advice..

What can I do next?

Hi Camerons M.. I too have been having problems wit hdoaper rash and my DD name is Camryn. I took her to the Dr 2 times for it. It might be fungal is what one Dr told me. He gave me an RX and I was using Hydrocortizone and the next day it was almost gone. She gets such bad diaper rashes that she bleeds...poor baby. Just really sensitive skin. She still gets them every few days but they go away pretty quickly just as they came. One diaper change nothing the next BAM bad rash... weird... idk what it is.

Sometimes a child will get a yeast infection that will present as a persistent diaper rash. Have you actually taken him to the doctor? If not, I would.

The dots are a sign that it is a yeast diaper rash, he will need a rx for it. My dd and ds got yeast rashes alot as infants. I would suggest switching diaper brands too. Take him to the doc, you will get nystatin cream or something similar.

I have found the Burt's Bee's "Baby Bee" diaper ointment to be VERY good. That is what worked for my son.
Also, the "Florasone" ointment, which is a natural cortisone alternative to hydrocortisone creams. Whole Foods has it or Amazon.

OR, your son may have a Yeast infection rash. This is common. If so, you need to use a Yeast cream for it, because the usual diaper creams will NOT get rid of the rash.
If it is a Yeast infection rash.... then your Doctor should be able to diagnose that and tell you. You tried Lotramin, which is a Yeast cream. But there are various yeast creams with different active ingredients in it. Our Ped, suggests a yeast cream with "Clotrimazole" in it, for example.

Also, it could be something he is eating.
How OLD is your child????
If breastfeeding, it could be what you are eating, too.

If nothing works, tell your Pediatrician, take him back to the Doctor, and get him re-checked.

It really sounds like a Yeast infection rash.
You probably have to get a Prescription cream for it, Nystatin, or whatever your Doc, prescribes.

all the best,
Susan

It may be a yeast infection. All of my kids have had those things in the past. In fact, my older daughter and youngest son were practially born with one! I tried everything, but everything just made it worse so I went to the pediatrician. I was prescribed nystatin for it each time. And it works wonders! You may want to ask your pediatrician if it could be a yeast infection and if it is, see if he will prescribe you some nystatin. I hope all goes well.

Butt paste! "Boudreaux's Butt Paste." I swear by it and I even believe it's better than Desitin.

You didn't mention how old your son is. I would also suggest that you stop using wipes that have a scent to it. If you can, use unscented wipes and always, I mean, ALWAYS make sure his bottom is totally dry before putting on the ointment and diapering him. I always used a diaper to fan my baby's bottom dry, then put the ointment, then the diaper. It's so very important to change that diaper the moment he has a bowel movement, no matter how small the amount. The acid in the feces is going to make his rash so much worse.

Also, get some Aveeno oatmeal bath soak. Just measure out a small amount, you don't need to use the entire package, and let his bottom soak in the oatmeal. I used to also make just a very small amount, maybe a tablespoon or so, mix it in a small bowl and use a soft cloth to put on my baby's bottom. Don't worry about rinsing...just dry very well, use a diaper to fan his bottom and then ointment and then the diaper. Rashes can be quite persistent, I know, I've dealt with some serious rashes.

Could very well be a yeast infection. Little baby booties are constantly wet and our bodies are naturally covered in yeast so it does happen. Ask the doc for a prescription to clear it. After 3 weeks it's not just diaper rash.

Someone may have already suggested this...but try Triple Paste. You can get it at Target.

My mom always swore by zinc oxide for DR and TP has the highest % I've found, (plus the hosp gave it to me to take home too).

It works like a charm. I put it on my 10 mo daughter esp at night and add some powder over it and by morning if she has a rash it's pracically gone.

Our ped would also tell you to let him air out, (harder with boys!), between diaper changings on the table, change often and use a warm washcloth instead of wipes.

My daughter had this problem. They only thing that worked was air time. We let her spend as much time as possible without a diaper. Be prepared for messes :-) but it does work best.

Hi Mama-
A couple of things to try.
1. Dr. Boudreaux's butt paste. You can get it at Target. I know a couple whose son was so sensitive that nothing seemed to work until this cream. It really is amazing and generously priced. This is worth the $4!
2. Air it out a little. Let your baby go naked and dry out here and there for 5-10 minutes at a time. I don't think it's the diapers....but airing out the bottom may prove to show some relief.
3. Make everything unscented- soap, lotion, detergent- dye and perfume free--even the wipes.
4. Try cloth diapers on a day when you don't need to leave the house. His bottom just might be needing a little more air flow.
Hope that helps!

It's probably some sort of bacterial or fungal infection. My son had one when he was about 1 1/2 years old. It would lessen with the application of different ointments but it never totally went away until finally it overnight it just got so bad (he was all swollen and fire-y red around his privates) he couldn't hardly walk. Took him to the doc and he gave us a prescription for antibiotics which almost made it go away. About two days after the antibiotics run was done it came back with a vengeance. Took him back to the doc and he gave us a stronger antibiotic, which like the previous one worked until we were done with it. Back to the doc he said he didn't have clue but as a last resort we could try Tinactin so that's what we did. Used it per instructions on the can and it worked. As a matter of fact my son never got a rash again. I would advise that you take him to the pediatrician though and take it from there.

I swear by Aquaphor....used it on both my girls when they had rash or not to protect the skin. We still use it with rashes since potty training...rashes happen 8-0. Hoping you find something that works for your little guy!!

It sounds like a yeast infection. My daughter used to get them all the time. I took her to the doctor and he gave me a prescription ointment that cleared it up in a week. My suggestion is to call your doctor. None of the things you are doing is going to help without medical intervention.

My only other recommendation would be to keep a hair dryer at his changing table and blow him dry after each changing. I know it sounds weird, but it will ensure that all the moisture is gone and you're not locking in any with the ointment. Obviously use a low setting, he'll probably like it too : ).

If you can, try gDiapers, we used them with both sons and never had a diaper rash, but once we'd stick a disposable on them, they'd flair up. All that plastic holding in the moisture. But our youngest is a super big baby and outgrew them when he was just over a year old.

Now we swear by Aquaphor Baby for everything from dry skin to diaper rash. Also, we wash his bum with California Baby Diaper Area Wash after a poop, to try to get as much bacteria off as possible. For a really bad diaper rash, we did a little Zinc oxide cream then the Aquaphor over it.

A little naked time is always good to air things out too. We have hardwood floors, so that was an option. You can also heat up the house, and stick him in the bathtub (w/o water) on a towel with some toys. Even 15 minutes can make a big difference.

Good luck!

It's probably an over-growth of yeast. Call your pediatrician and ask for some Nystatin Ointment. It also comes in a cream, but it tends to sting a little. Apply it 4 times a day until the redness has been gone for a few days. Air dry the buns as often as you can and switch from wipes to cotton cloths until the rash is gone. Both my girls have had several after antibiotics.....so I give them a probiotic while treating the diaper area and it clears up a lot more quickly. Good luck!

I am going through the same thing with my 19 mo old. Her rash also has little red dots and changing her diaper is TORTURE!! I feel so bad for my lil one. Ive used Desitin, Triderma, Vaseline, A&d, Lotrimin, and even Mylanta with a cotton ball (suggestion from a friend since it's the same stomach acids causing the rash) and out of all of them I can honestly say that the A&D (yellow label) is the one that has helped her the best. You have to lather it on pretty thick and change his diaper atleast every 2 hrs. My DD3 has had chronic diarreah for 4 months now and it's really messed up her little bottom and trust me when I say Ive tried every product out there and the A&D has been the best. I hope he gets better!! and make sure you look into WHY he's having these diaper rashes too, is he having too many loose bms? or drinking too much juice? also too many fruits can cause a diaper rash b/c of the high acid found in fruits.
