Yes there is a better solution. Dr Bordeaux's Butt Paste. It really is the best it works overnight. My daughter use to scream with desitin as well and A&D did not work. They both smelled awful anyway. This stuff is great.

Have you tried plain old vasaline, used to clear diaper rash right up with both of my kids, and its easy on the budget.

My daughter had really bad diaper rash a few weeks ago and her doctor said to use Lotromin. It's for athlete's foot but it's supposed to work well for diaper rash.

I highly recommend Triple Paste and Aquaphor. Both work very well and if the rash is really bad, I would use them together. Both are over the counter and while somewhat expensive, worth every penny! Good luck!

try calendula. can get otc at drugstore. it is more than preventative like the ones you mentioned it actually heals the rash. great stuff.

When my little ones get a diaper rash that won't go away I use antibiotic ointment, like store brand Neosporin. Then I top it with corn starch. Nothing with talc. By the next diaper change it looks tons better!

You can try Burts Bees diaper rash cream or Lansinoh (the stuff for breast feeding moms). I have used both on diaper rashes with excellent results. The Lansinoh is great for kids with extremely sensitive skin.

Our pediatrician actually gave us some good advice while we were still in our disposable days:

1) wash with water only. Get rid of wipes unless they are simply water added.

2) Stomahesive powder. After washing her bottom, and drying it totally - may need to air dry a few minutes, put this on the open areas directly. It's powder that surgeons use to keep medicine from weeping out of incisions and sores and etc. You have to special order it (CVS), and it's about 12/oz. Worth every penny. lasts forever unless your 2 year old uses it for a spritz on the stuffed animals.

3) Triple paste. CVS again. or whatever pharmacy. It is zinc based. Put this on like cupcake frosting. Literally. about 1/4 inch thick. Plan on a lot of diapers? Get the 1 pound jar, it costs about 1/2 per pound what the 4 or 8 oz cost.

4) corn starch powder. Cover the paste with powder. Keeps it from zapping into the diaper,and allows it to do its work.

5) Change as SOON as you know she has a poop, and same for urine too.

6) Once her bottom has healed, or is close to it, line her diapers with FLEECE (like as in from JoAnns or Walmart). Just rinse and wash like the rest of her clothes when you change her diapers.

Yikes, I think ths is the third time I have typed this in the last 2 years I've been here. I'm copying it!

My Daughters were the same way. I took them to the ped. and discovered they actually had yeast infections, and it is very common. They gave me a script for cream that took it right away. I was also told any yeast infection cream (OTC) would also work. It was cheaper for me to use the script, and by my second child the ped would just call it in for me. One tube lasted each child until out of diapers! Also, once the rash was gone I used Bag Balm. They sell it at Wal-Mart in with the first aid items I believe. It comes in a square tin box and is great for all sorts of things! Hope these help! Good luck!

To help cure the rash I'd recommend leaving her without a diaper for an hour or so a day, just bare butt (really as long as you are able to is best), and exposing the area to sun for 5 minute periods throughout the day (maybe 3 times a day). I have found air and sun to work best for curing diaper rash quickly.

Another ointment to cure/prevent you may want to try is Aquaphor. It has no smell. I've always used that as my barrier ointment and have only had 2 instance of rash with my daughter who is three, both times due to her being on antibiotics.

The most effective form of control for diaper rash I learned from my great-grandmother. It's simple, natural, and inexpensive. The answer is corn starch. Pat some corn starch on each time you change a diaper. That's all.
The first time my daughter had a severe case of diaper rash, my great-grandmother suggested this remedy. It worked immediately, and so I continued using it on both kids, and they never had diaper rash again.
At the time, my pediatrician explained that using ointments is counter-productive, because the skin needs to be totally dry for the ointments to be effective. Applying ointment to skin only seals in moisture that already exists, making the problem worse. Cornstarch dries the skin, and somehow has an affect against rash that we cannot understand completely.
Not only did this remedy work for me, and I have passed it on, but I've noticed that many other mothers have had succss and passed it on.

Old fashioned cornstarch.

Personally I have always used Arbonne's Baby Care line. My middle son had rashes constantly. Didn't matter how often I changed him or what diapers I used. The diaper rash cream from Arbonne was the only thing that kept the rashes at bay.

I learned very quickly after receiving it as a gift that for me, Boudreaux's BUTT PASTE is the only thing I have/will ever use for both my kids. It is fantastic and works very quickly depending on the severity-for minor usually within one or two diaper changes. You can purchase it now just about anywhere (CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens, Walmart, Target and every major food stores). It is a little on the expensive side, but it WORKS!

Sometimes my 4.5 year old still wants to use it for minor irritations!

Just apply baby oil each time. You may need to get her to drink more water and hold over the basin to rinse her often, since her urine may be too strong.

Hopefully this will resolve the issue.

I would also recommend Vaseline Petroleum Jelly.

Boudreaux's Butt Paste or Triple Paste

My friend swears by using mineral oil and caldesine powder. You mix them together and put it right on there. It will help seal in the wet and heal at the same time. I hope this works for you!! Good luck!

Aquaphor is what we use.

Beaudreux's Butt Paste is awesome (not sure i spelled it right)-- available at most chain pharmacies and Target. My son was a NICU baby and they used Aquaphor ointment -- this is best though when baby has no rash to start with -- dry baby's bottom really well and then slather it on!! it creates a moisture barrier.
you should also think about getting her checked for a yeast infection -- believe it or not my SON actually had one and they are VERY painful. it is an external rash (not liek the kind we mom's get!) caused by chronic moisture in the area.
dr. gave us a Rx cream for it -- keeping her in a dry diaper is the key though...

Did you ever try the butt paste? I was also told to try just plain baby powder. The powder will dry it out. Some doctors tell you NOT to use then turn around and tell you to use it cause most ointments do burn. So I put powder on my daughter now and she doesn't even get the slightest bit of rash. Our mothers used powder, they didn't have all these fancy creams and we are still alive. So it can't hurt and like I said it works great and keeps her dry. Hope this helps.

I have only used Earth's Best products on our 8-month old and never had a problem. All organic, can get in Babies R Us.

Triple paste (you can buy it at pharmacy or food store)...looks like same ingredients but people swear by it. Good luck!

I use a product that I have brought from Rite Aid called "Butt Paste" takes the rash away in 1 to 2 days. It's kind of sticks on the butt but it works. I have seen it in Baby's R Us also. Hope this is helpful...

Hi C., I use A&D daily to prevent diaper rash but on the rare occasion my daughter does get a rash I use Triple Paste. Its a bit more expensive than the others but really soothes and heals the rash and reduces the irritated redness pretty quickly. Good Luck! S.

Hi - Try Weleda Calendula Baby Cream or Weleda Diaper Care. The Diaper Care has zinc oxide in it, wich may be what's causing her the discomfort. So I would try the Baby Cream first. Also great is Boudraux's Butt Paste (funny name, i know....) My daughter had diaper rash every day until she got out of diapers, so I tried them all! The best for my daughter was actually Burt's Bees, but once again it had alot of zinc oxide in it. Hope this helps!

I vote for Bodreaux's Butt Paste! That worked for 99% of my daughter's diaper rashes-only once did we need prescription goop for a yeast infection, so you might want to get her checked for that just in case.

Aquaphor works great for diaper rash

Baby Aquafor by Eucerin. If you cant find the baby variety, regular Aquafor will work just fine. You can get it at Target, or any pharmacy.
The trick is to make sure the skin is absolutely dry before you put the ointment on. If the skin is damp, the ointment will lock in the moisture on the skin and your problem will only worsen, not improve.

Those creams never worked for my children. The only cream that worked was Calendula Diaper Care made by Weleda Baby. I purchase it at the health food store. My children are now
9(boy)and 6(girl) and I still use it on my daughter if she gets a little red or a rash on her bottom and it works.

I have always used Shaklee's Basic H spray. It works great even on rashes that are so bad that they bleed. It is pH balanced so it helps heal the skin fast. It is a coconut based formula that you dilute in a water spray bottle. They also just came out with a diaper rash product specifically for diaper rash.

As a mother of 2 youngsters with extremely sensitive skin I know how difficult diaper rash can be. I had tried every product at the drugstore & health store. Nothing worked effectively in healing my kids diaper rash & they would break out from all the preservatives in these drugstore products. They all contain zinc oxide or some other synthetic ingredient, to my surprise, even Burts Bee's!! A friend of mine then told me about a little known completely natural product called "Diaper Rash Cream" from an amazing company, Nature Only. It's really worked beautifully for my kids. They are now in nursery & K. They are independent with their bathroom duties in school but they come home with irritations sometimes. The Diaper Rash Cream works soo well. I apply it after a bath. this is what works.I wash(half way bath)them after every poop.Change diapers a little more often.
NO WIPES WITH FRAGRANCE.

Boudreaux's Butt Paste! It's a bit more expensive but definately worth the cost. My son had horrible diaper rash on and off for years and that stuff worked. It's over the counter and available in most pharmacies. If the rash is wet try alternating applications of butt paste with small amounts of Lotromin, the foot fungus cream.(Also over the counter) I know that sounds weird but it will dry out the rash and speed up the healing.

I've tried many ointments and the best one I found is one my mom and I make. We use beeswax, calendula extract, sunflower oil and olive oil. Everything that's in it is ok to eat just in case baby does get a hold of it. We do sell it for $5/ 2 oz container but you might be able to find the recipe on the internet. I put aquaphor on and then the destin on afterwards.. the aquaphor is like a medicated vasoline so the urine will not stick to it and irritate the area more... also instead of wipes use cool wet papertowels to wipe the area.... try and let the area diaper free in between changes if even for 10 min

Another vote for triple paste! It works awesome, my son had a rash and was starting to get a yeast infection, the next morning after using triple paste it was all gone! It also works as a great cream for teething, chapped cheeks and little one that suck their thumb and end up having skin breakdown.

Butt Paste is the BEST! Plus now they have made it "Green".

I have not read the other posts but I will tell you my story with my daughter...

We had a HORRIBLE time with what we thought was diaper rash; and I guess based on the typical definition, it was. None of the "usual" lotions helped her symptoms. It even got so bad that it would get raw and break open.

It turned out it was a fungal infection. We ended up treating it with regular antifungal and bacitracin when it broke open. Twice we had to go to the doctor's to get a script.

It took us well over a year to get over this stage of things. We also had to change brands of diapers several times to find one that "breathed" enough to keep her dry.

So, I guess, I never really answered your question but offer the advise that if it does not clear, gets raw or breaks open that you seek medical assistance.

This is a problem with some kids and I have gone through this with a couple of mine.

If you really feel that you should use something medicated, I used aveeno diaper rash cream. It worked well with my youngest, who was born with diaper rash. I don't know how that happens. :/

With my son, now 8, the only thing I could use on him was plain vaseline (or petroleum jelly at the $ stores, same thing), and maybe just a little bit of baby powder to keep it from sticking to his diaper.

Target sells this stuff called Butt paste. And you could always try vasoline.

My son is 23 months old, he has had a great deal of diaper rashes. Caused by the juice we gave him. My sister in law recommended Butt Paste .. And let me tell you it works wonders. Ever time he get a little red, on goes Butt Paste and its gone by the next diaper change. You can get it at Target, Walmart, or CVS. Good Luck and hope it works just as well for you as it did us.

Plain old vasoline is a great preventive. Rashes can come from reactions to different food that they eliminate and if you get used to putting a thin coat of vasoline on her bum it will prevent rashes.

Triple paste works well. It's very thick. They sell it in the baby stores. A friend told me about something called Bag Balm. I think that's the name. It's sold in a green and black tin. It was actually originally used for cow's irritated udders. Her dr. recommended it. My mom found it in the store. It looks like vaseline. I used it and it seemed to work fine. My girls only had occasional diaper rash so, I'm not sure if it's a miracle worker. There's also prescription diaper cream. Good luck.

Wow. I just saw that this post is from July and hope you've already figured this out, but just in case, try Aquaphor Baby. We're a sensitive skin family and Aquaphor was the only thing that didn't make the diaper rash worse.

If you haven't already done so, check with your pediatrician to make sure there's not a fungal problem, in which case you need a prescription ointment (or if she's old enough, you may be able to use Lotrimin). Also, if she's old enough, the doctor may tell you it's OK to use hydrocortisone. Sometimes that was all that would work for us.

Finally, if you haven't already done so, try switching your diaper brand. We had to avoid Pampers altogether, because all the Pampers are scented and thus very irritating to the skin. We had a lot of problems with the Huggies diapers too. They are unscented but the dyes or coatings seemed to be irritating. However, Huggies pullups were OK in rotation with other brands. We developed a system where we switched between Huggies pullups, Seventh Generation, and the drug store (Rite Aid or CVS) generic brands. When the irritation started up, we'd switch to a different brand and the rash would clear up for a while. When it got bad again, we'd switch again. This meant we could never buy diapers in bulk though!

Hi C., I have not used it personally, but I have heard other parents rave about Triple Paste. You can find it in most drug stores. My local Rite Aid carries it.

I second Bodreaux's Butt Paste!! Love that stuff. But I also wonder if your daughter just doesn't like the feel of having stuff all over her while she's playing and stuff. Maybe it's not so much pain as just how she knows how to describe it. Try the Butt Paste!! :)

I used to use Burt's Bees diaper creme...also, if you coat the cream with petroleum jelly, it prevents further irritation while allowing the diaper creme to do it's thing.

Johnson Diaper Cream in a blue tube is Wonderful. I believe it is no special name but it works wonderful and I don't like the others. A.

Definitely try bordeaux's butt paste. My mom used to have to make it for me at her job (she's a pediatric nurse) for my son back in the day but now someone was genius and began packaging the stuff. It's amazing stuff!

We've used Butt Paste since our girls were born. It's worked great for us.

I have used Motherlove "diaper rash and thrush cream" since my son's birth - he's never had any rashes. It's olive oil based and organic. I love love love it and I usually order it online directly from their website. Also, always make sure the area is dry after cleaning before applying the cream. Apparently the moisture is what actually makes the rash. The Motherlove line is really good - I actually use their "nipple cream" as a moisturizer for my toddler face, even though I stopped breast-feeding a year ago. It's also olive oil based. I even discretely put a little on his nails/hands at night before he sleeps, to prevent chapped cuticles/hands. Their products are not harmful if eaten/ingested by kids (the idea being that babies put their hands everywhere and then in their mouths, so pdts should be edible/safe).

Also, I would stay away from anything that is petroleum based (vaseline, baby oil, etc.) or talc based (traditional baby powder). After researching these ingredients when I was pregnant, i learned that these are not good for your child's health long term, nor is petrol actually compatible with skin - or ingestible for that matter.

Our pediatric group told us to use Aquaphor --and a lot of it --"like you are putting layers of icing on a cake" I knwo there is a CVS eqivalent brand now that someone told me is exactly the same. We are out of diapers now so I no longer buy it.

Triple Paste by far is the best. It is pricier but worth every penny. I usually would buy it in CostCo but I'm sure you can find it in most drug stores. And of course, when you can, air her out.

I would ask your doctor, I know they have a perscribtion that works really well. I used it for my son. I can't remember the names. Sorry.

Hi,C.. I know that corn starch is great....yeah, corn starch. I know a woman who used it and cooked it and put it on her son's bottom (after it cooled down a bit) according to the dr's advice (that was a long time ago, he's in his thirties I think) and it worked and same for my MIL and also, I have tried Gold Bond Medicated with Corn Starch and it worked. Try it if you want and let us know how it went. I'll pray for ya all. :)

Triple paste. It was the only thing that worked for my son. Also, use a bath to help. We use to let him soak in Aveeno baby wash (pink top) and put baking soda in it (the stuff you put in your fridge). Pour all this into a warm bath and let her soak. This should help.

I swear by using Aquaphor Baby when my son would get a diaper rash. It would clear it up in like a few hours. It was great. I hope this helps you.

If you want to try a noncream/paste (maybe she doesn't like the texture of cream?) then I would suggest Gold Bond Medicated baby powder! It is a little harder to find but so worth it!!

Hi C....I have went through the same thing with my baby until I used Weleda Diaper-Care. That ointment is awsome! and I have not used any other brand since....and just putting a very thin layer of the ointment between dipper changes will prevent further skin breakage. Hope that helps.

Triple Paste. Buy the big tub instead of the tube (CVS or Target), and then it's a little more cost effective. And when my daughter had a rash that was so bad it blistered, the doctor's office suggested mixing it with half Lotrimin AF. That was a few years ago, and I think they may even sell something now that is a mixture of the two. Worked great.

I like Arbonne's diaper cream. You have to buy it from a consultant or over the internet, but it's all natural and it works for my son. I also use the stuff for athlete's foot sometimes. That's if the rash is a yeast rash. I hope her rash clears up soon.
