Butt paste baby! No really - there is this stuff called butt paste (you can find it in the baby section of any store) that i have had absolute success with. I know the desitin works, but smear that butt paste on really good as often as you can and he will be smiling again in no time! Good luck!!!

Hi M.,
My oldest daughter as an infant had HORRENDOUS diaper rash! What was recommended to me was a diaper cream called Boudreaux's Butt Paste. IT has Zinc oxide like all the rest but it also has Peruvian Balsam Fir in it which I believe has a healing property to it. You can now get it over the counter at Walmart and Target. This stuff was a total lifesaver. Overnight the rash had decreased by 50% and by the next day it was gone and she had it for almost a week beforehand! I now use it on my 2nd daughter and it still works great! Also when you wipe your son try using a soft cloth with cool water instead of the baby wipes which have chemicals and perfumes which will sting the area. You can also rub a layer of Vaseline over his bottom. Vaseline repels the urine from his skin because it is petroleum based. Good luck and try the butt paste. It is like magic :o)D. Langley

Creams usually just cover up a problem. My mom said that she used to wash our bottoms at the sink when we were young and that we never had diaper rash. I thought she was crazy at first. Who has time to wash their kid's butt every time they go? But I tried it with our second child, and he never had any diaper rash issues. If you have a sink with a little space to one side, you can lay a towel down to soften it for their head, and then just hold their feet while you rinse their butt under the water -- and of course use soap. Then I would just keep a towel on the rack that was just for diaper changes. We also keep some antibacterial spray by the sink to spray it down after we are done. My son is two and potty-training, but we did this right up until he potty-trained. I usually only did it after a poopy diaper because these were the ones that seemed to cause the most irritation. And needed the most cleaning up afterwards. Diaper wipes are better than nothing, but they basically just smear the poop around. Of course we had to use them when we were out of the house, but an occasional use of wipes did not seem to cause as big of a problem as the constant use of wipes.

Hello M.. My son's pediatrician gave me a good tip about diaper rashes. After cleaning and drying his bottom completely, put mylanta on a cotton ball and dap on his bottom. Wait until the mylanta dries (it will turn white) and put disatin on top of it. The Mylanta is an anti-acid and will protect the skin from the acidic urine. Do this with every diaper change, until rash clears up. My son used to get open sores when his diaper rash would flair up, this usually occurs every time he is on antibiotics. Mylanta really works for him.

I know that this sounds strange but I SWEAR it works. Put some mylanta (the stuff you take for heart burn) and put it on a cotton ball. Lightly dab it onto the rash so that it covers it. Wait about one minute and then put your diaper rash cream of choice on top of it. I promise you will see amazing results in the first day of using this. I cant explain it but it is just one of those things that has been passed to me by another mommy and it works wonders!

The overnight purple Desitin which says overnight relief-- that is super use it day and night to help with the pain-- also it is best to let him go without a diaper and let the air help - perhaps after you change him and you know he just"went" you can let him go without a diaper for a while. Another good thing is to uses natural cornstarch right off the grocery store shelf. If the area is very bad and you see an infection type of skin then of course you may need a prescription. Hopefully you can remedy it fast enough. Go on the internet and type in diaper rash and natural remedies-- there is another good idea and I can't remember what it was now! L.

I remember going through that. The best thing to do is clean him with just a damp cloth and not baby wipes as baby wipes have a soap in them that can cause more burning. Second thing is to let the air get to his little bottom as much as possible until it heals. Third, very important, do not let him sit in any dirty diapers. Check him regurlary for wetness of any kind. You know what I mean. Also if you feed him any dyed juices (especially the red ones) Stop. I noticed that everytime my son had some red juices, whether it be just juice or pedialyte, he would break out with a very bad diaper rash. This was due to the dyes in the juices excreting when he urinated and then it staying on his skin for any period of time. If the moisture has time to absorb then you are asking for a diaper rash. Just remember we all learn from our mistakes and help from others. Unfortunatly when I was going through that period with my, now 4 year old, son I didn't have any help from others. I wish you luck. If there is anything else I can help with just ask.

Take the diaper off and let him crawl around bear-bottomed! The air needs to get in there as much as possible. Wipe up the pee-pee, and you'll save on diapers as well. Balmex works wonderful, too - use liberally with every diaper change. If the rash doesn't get better in a few days, it may be fungal and will need a prescription cream, such as Nystatin. Good luck!

When my daughter's rash was that bad, I asked the pediatrician, and he recommended Triple Paste. You can get it at Target, any drug store, or even online. It is seriously the BEST diaper rash cream I have ever used. After one application, you WILL see an improvement. It is so worth the price. Also, in the meantime, an oatmeal bath might help soothe his hiney a bit. Aveeno makes packets of baby oatmeal bath. Also, I'd have the pediatrician look at his rash to make sure it's not a bacterial or yeast infection (boys can get yeast infections too). If it is bacterial or yeast, he might give you a special prescription cream to use as well.

try using just a warm wash cloth instead.
2. if you are using destin creamy try the regular destin instead it has more zinc oxide the higher the better.
3. if all else fails call the doctor and ask for an rx for nystatin cream and sprinkle with baby powder to help it stick better.

Bordeaux's Butt Paste!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is 200 times more effective than desitin. It is kinda stinky but it usually only took me 1 application to get the rash under control and my kids used to get the worst diaper rash. Also, if the skin is broken, a little neosporin (the kind with the pain reliever in it) will help keep infection away. During bad outbreaks, ditch the wipes and use a soft washcloth with warm water and a little mild soap. Lots of kisses work too! Good luck

Try Flander's Buttocks Ointment. It works great! If the pharmacy carries it, you have to go to the pharmacy counter and ask for it. It is not prescription, but it is in limited supply, so they only keep 2-3 tubes at a time. If the pharmacy doesn't carry it, google it and you can order it on line. This worked on my son's diaper rash that was so bad, it would bleed (to much acid in his diet). It was recommended by my pediatrican and a lot of other mom's. Hope this helps!

Though I was using Desitin from the time my baby was born, my pediatrician highly recommended A&D ointment. It has worked beautifully, there is no harsh rubbing to get the zinc off like with Desitin. I make sure the baby's bottom is dry by blotting with a tissue, then I slather on a generous amount of A&D. I've read that for really bad diaper rash it's good to keep the baby out of diapers for chunks of time to let air get to it and also to change the baby as soon as she poops.

Hi M.,
my advice: do not wipe his butt, sit him in your sink or baby tub and let the running water clean everything up. After washing off, blow dry (not too hot) and keep doing that until the rash is gone. My experience (my daughter is now 4 years) water and air does the best. Another suggestion: try to change his diapers more frequently to give his skin a rest.
Good luck.

Hi there,
I read some of the responses and they are all great. They have even said what I'm about to suggest, I just didn't get to read all of them. :)
Our pediatrician suggested to either (1) butt paste alone for 24 hr; if that doesn't work: (2) first wipe with only water, let air dry, poor milk of magnesium (sp) and let dry, then wash off with water and air dry, spread on anything with oxide (balmex, desitin (our fav) or butt paste - should clear up with 24 hours; if that doesn't work (3) ask your pediatrician for a rx for BUTT BALM (it's only sold at the Miami Children's Pharmacy or Allen's Pharmacy in Coral Gables - it's $25 for a 4 oz - rash gone within hours! I have yet to see such a product. TRUST ME! We keep it in stock for those nasty rashes. Our babies are 23 months and 7 months, and the MofM doesn't work now since they won't sit still very long. HTH

First take him to the dr. and make sure it's not yeast. If it's not yeast, then try Triple Paste. You can get it at Target or Walgreens. It is expensive ($8 for a little tube), but it really worked for us when my daughter had a really bad rash that was ulcerated and bleeding when she was about 2 months. Her ped's nurse recommended it and gave us free samples. See if your dr. has any samples too. My daughter has sensitive skin and we have to really keep an eye on her little bum and use the TP whenever she gets some bumps. It clears it right up and we haven't had a problem since. Good luck!

Desitin is good, but it is hard to wipe off. - Which causes pain. My ped told me to use balmex b/c it wipes off easily.
My son would get horrible diaper rash anytime he as on ANY type of medication. I have used everything even prescriptions.. The best thing i have found is Aquaphor. It is like a pure based vaseline. Its made by Eucerine. I used to use Vitamin A&D oin tment , but sometimes he would cry so I thought it may be hurting him. I saw that Desitin came out with an all purpose clear ointment that would probably work.
When my son had his circumcision, the Dr told me to stay away from anything with zinc. Sometimes the zinc can be an irritant. Also, I stop using baby wipes and just use wet papertowels. They are more pure. (even the baby wipes that say pure have alot of junk inn them)

My son had such bad diaper rash at 2 months old that his butt bled and he screamed while changing his diaper! The only thing that helped and soothed him was using Aquaphor instead of those diaper rash ointments. They have chemicals in them that just irritate it further. That's why your baby cries more when you use them. Also, we rinsed the baby wipes with water before wiping with them because they, too, have chemicals on them that made him scream. In a very short amount of time, while using these methods, my son was much better. He had such bad diaper rash because he had severe colic and we had to try several different formulas before we found the one that didn't make him sick. The soy formula upset him terribly and gave him this horrible rash!
Lots of luck to you,
C.

Hi M.,
Sorry about your baby's sore bottom.
Do not use wipes, they will burn your baby's bottom, even the sensitive/fragrance free kind. I know because we only use fragrance free, and mine would scream whenever we tried to use it on his sore bottom.
What I did for my son, was have a container of warm water, and some paper towels.
Soak a sheet of paper towel in the warm water (if the paper towels are super thick, I seperate the layers/ply so that it is thinner), wipe and dab his botttom then toss it in the trash, repeat.
Try Bordeaux's Butt Paste in my opinion it works the best in treating diaper rash. You can find it at Target or Walmart. Then I put vaseline over the rash cream.
Also have him walk around diaper free for a little while, that helps treat the diaper rash also, good old fashion air.
Hope your little guy feels better soon.

Isn't Diaper Rash the worst. I was given this hint when we first had the baby and it has helped a lot. I was told that just allowing your clean baby's bottom to just be exposed to air will really help. Usually when my son has diaper rash, I will give him his bath and then afterwards (after towel drying him all off) just let him lay on the bathroom floor naked for 10 - 15 - 20 minutes. Then diaper him up with a then normal diatin and stuff. If the baby is too fidgity to lay their for that lenght of time, we will lay on a towel in front of the TV. If you are concerned he will pee. Just put a folded diaper in the front to catch any unexpected sprays!
This hint was told to us by a nurse at hospital when we delievered. Usually within a few days I have noticed a big difference. You can also give him a few minutes of air between diaper changes. Once you have wiped off all the poop and cream, you can fan his little bottom for a few minutes.
One last thing I have noticed. I think that not only the wiping hurts their bottoms when you change their little chapped rears, but also the alcohol or whatever in the wipes themselves. Maybe if you ring out some unused wipes in tap water before you use them, the chemicals will not sting the chapped bottom as much...
GOOD LUCK!

You have lots of advise for products to use to clear it up, but as far as hurting when cleaning him, my daughter had one so bad that I was getting a little blood on the wipe because the skin was so raw it was cracking or whatever. Instead of using wipes which might sting while it is that raw, I would get a soft baby washcloth with warm water to put on there. Felt much better to her.

Hi M.!
My husband and I just went through the same thing this weekend, so sad! I took her to the Dr. on Friday because it was breaking my heart, she cried and so did I. Anyway, she has a bad gastro intestineal virus thats going around, VERY CONTAGOUS, according to the Dr. He said it could last approximately 7 to 10 days. Anyway, it is the acid in the poop causing the rash, or it could be the acid in the urine. Are you giving your baby juice, if so STOP! Also, NO WIPES. Keep a cup of warm water in the room, wet the wash cloth and sqeeze it over his area to clean, either blot the area, or wipe gently with a cloth! Also, maybe change his diet to bland foods right now! Toast, banana, rice, etc. Getr the original desiten, the purple one, its thicker, better barrier. The Dr. gave Dakota Lotramin A/F for the pain, you can always ask the pharmacist if its okay for a boy, it cant hurt! Hope this helps! Good Luck! J.

I haven't read anyone else's responses, but I would just like to share my experience with this with you.
My son often has the exact same problem, and our doctor thinks it is a form of a yeast infection. Our son gets so sore that he even bleeds! It is awful, and he really cries. The best things I can tell you are:
Try not to use regular wipes. When the sores are really raw and tender, the softest thing you can think of works the best. I have been using the sensitive newborn wipes on our little Zack ... and sometimes just a quick wipe down and then a bath to finish the job. Obviously, you can't do this six times a day, but once in a while it doesn't hurt.
Also, if the stools tend to be runnier (like, just soaking the diaper instead of being more substantial) we use a lot of powder to keep him drier and help soak it up beofre it can make him sore. We switch between Desitin, powder, and Nystatin (prescription medicine) and it usually clears up pretty quickly. Also, when it gets really raw and sore, I will put a little Neosporin on the sores and sometimes coat his tender bits with vaseline to protect him from getting sore.
I know, it sounds like a lot, but it works well for us!
Also, my sister in law just told me that she uses Lotrimin, which treats (among other things) athlete's foot and jock itch ... she says her pediatrician told her to use that on her daughter, and it helps her really well.
Hope something in this novel hepled you out!

Poor baby!
I know there is a lot of advice already here, but here are some important things that I found with treating and preventing diaper rash:
Prevention: As soon as any area looks red, wash well (baby wipes do the trick fine, I like using something that is natural or for sensitive skin), let dry (I usually pat dry with the new diaper I'm about to use since it's' clean), and apply moisture barrier, i.e diaper rash cream, vasaline, Lanolin, whatever. And change regularly to keep that area dry. I've avoided many a rashes this way--but sometimes they are not avoidable...esp when the baby has diarrhea or they are notorious for pooping and not letting you know!
Once it's full blown rash and has open sores (OUCH!), clean well but very carefully--let the area dry COMPLETELY and put some sort of medicated moisture barrier on--I really like Destin creamy, but other moms swear by Burt's Butt Paste or other creams, most of them use Zinc Oxide as the active ingredient since its not soluble in water and therefore a good moisture barrier, but others are petroleum based (which are also not water soluble) and have other skin nourishing additives like lanolin or aloe--the key is though to keep that area clean, dry and then protect. It will need to heal on its own and can only do so if it remains dry...so change even more often then you regularly would.
Finally, look to his diet to help alleviate some of the irritants that can make they rash worse: keep away from things in his diet that can cause your baby's poop to be more acidic, like most fruits (apples, pears, etc) and all fruit juices--bananas are usually fine though and can help with diarrhea.
Finally, give him yogurt every day if he'll eat it (I use Yo Baby baby). But any yogurt with active cultures will help regulate his BM ph and tummy.
Good luck! Once the sores are open it can take at least a week to really heal..
