Hi moms,
I'm having problems with my son having HORRIBLE diaper rash, his poor bottom is so raw I can't touch him. The problem is he has to take antibiotics every day, for a extremely rare auto-immune disorder, so we have constant bouts with diahera (sp?). I give him acidopholis I try everyday if I can remember. I guess what I am asking is what do you suggest for his poor little butt?! Help! Help! Help!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

It was a bad rash and a yeast infection on top of it. We keep Nystatin on hand becasue of the daily need for antibiotics. Nothing else was working inaddition to the nystatin. It has finally started to clear up on it's own. Thanks for everyones' help!

I also wanted to recommend a spray diaper rash treatment. My second son had horrible excema and that is the only thing that worked for him. I had to buy it online though. I hope he is doing better! I know with my son, anything that I would touch that I put on him made it worse, but the spray didn't have the zinc or something in it and it worked WONDERS. It is called RashMist and I got it from www.Petkin.com It sells pet supplies as well so don't get thrown off. LOL! Anyway, I have the sensitive skin formula and I swear by it. Aquaphor works great too and you can buy it at walmart.

If you haven't tried it, it might worth to try it since it is inexpensive and easy to get.

Hi M.!
I don't know if this will be an option for you, because of the diarrhea your precious baby tends to get, but naked time is GREAT for diaper rash. Of course you have to be ready for occasional accidents, but leaving him naked for a little while after a diaper change will really help him to heal. I really hope this helps, and that he gets past the sore-butt stage really quickly:):):)

Boudeaux's Butte Paste works really well. There is also a brand that we were given at Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital that is available at Walgreens. I can't remember the name of it right now, but it comes in a box, which contains about 5 or 6 smaller pallets of cream. Each pallet has a small sponge applicator with it. It is absolutely amazing! We used it when our son had extremely bad diarrhea when he had the roto-virus.
Good luck,

Hi! Antibiotics are really hard on the wee ones bottoms. I found that Dr Smith's (expensive but cheaper if you buy it on-line at Amazon.com and go ahead and buy like 4 tubes and you'll get free shipping) worked the best for my son. With my daughter we just used regular old petroleum jelly and it worked great for her. Use a lot of cream to put a barrier between the baby and the diaper. Change him as soon as you notice and use a washcloth to clean the residue to make sure that you get it all. Wipes don't do as good of a job as the baby is going to need to help battle this. I know it hurts, we had raw oozing sores from diaper rash more than once but keep it up! The Dr Smith's seems to be healing as well and it wipes off easier than Desitan (sp?) and the others.

Good luck!

I received this through my MOPs group.... hopefully it will help you with the diaper rash / raw bottom.

"A friend of mine whose sister is a pediatrician shared this with me
and I have used it ever since!

You mix together liquid Maalox and Aquaphor (which is made by Eucerin
and is for severely dry skin). I usually put the Aquaphor in a small
bowl pour Maalox on top and with a rubber glove on my hand knead the
two together. You then spread this on the bottom (if it is a little
runny, I dump that into the diaper) It doesn't seem to burn the way
that Desitin and the other creams do -esp. when the bottom is severely
chapped."

And, my son gets diarrhea from nearly any medication and we have to make him eat yogurt. Something about the flora in his digestive system being out of whack and the live cultures helps get things back on track.

Good luck!

I only use this when it seems like Desitin isn't working and usually I
see a huge difference by the next diaper change - I only use it while
the bottom is extremely chapped and would not recommend doing this
when the bottom is normal.

My son had horrible diaper rash as well and still gets it on occasion. His doctor prescribed diaper rash medicine for him and it has worked wonders. I only use sensitive skin wipes on him that are free of everything and that makes a difference as well. When his diaper rash is really bad, I give him a little soak in the tub every night to get off all the residue of the day and then I let him run around naked for about 10 minutes before I put his diaper back on to let him air out (sometimes I do have accidents, but I figure I can just clean those up). I tried all the home remedies, but the prescription diaper stuff is the only thing that truely worked for my son. I hope that this helps.

Hi M.,
As a mom who just went through this with my little girl, I'll give you the best advice I got from the nurse at her doctor's office. Do NOT use any sort of baby wipes on his bottom. Only use wet paper towels and dab rather than wipe or take him to the tub & spray him off using luke warm water or very mild soap. I won't go into too much detail, but the diahrea is a different sort when they're on meds & it actually burns their bottoms. The nurse said that using the wipes are like pouring alcohol (even the sensitive ones we were using) on an open wound. Second, I swear by a diaper cream called Diaper Derm. Within days of using it at every single diaper change, my little girl's rash was gone. This cream is hard to come by, but once in a while I'll see it at an actual Walgreens store. Lately, though, I've had to stock up on it by ordering at Walgreens online. Let me know how it works out if you decide to use this method. Just be sure to keep cream on his bum (no matter the brand) at all times and you'll start to see an improvement. Good luck & I really hope your son gets better.

First of all, if you can get ultra bifidus (mine is by Metegenics and I got it from my Chiropractor) from someone who deals in nutrition, you can put it in every drink you give him. If he is drinking from a sippy cup, you can put it in everything (about 1/4 tsp)or even in a bottle with breast milk or formula. Don't give him citrusy drinks...that makes the rash worse. My son had horrible diahrea when he was on antibiotics (8 weeks) and he ended up having a condition called c-dif (can't remember what it is short for...but it attacked the gut and got rid of all the good bacteria...he had to take something else to get rid of c-diff but the doctor suggested yogurt for the acidopholis). Ultra Bifidus has WAY more strains of the good bacteria to fight the diahrea and get the good bacteria into his system...you can't have too much good bacteria. If you can battle the diahrea, the rash situation should take care of itself. As far as what to do in the meantime, I have two things that worked on my kids...Boudreaux Butt Paste...very thick and keeps a pretty good barrier and Arbonne's diaper rash cream. Both are very natural...no scents or extra things that will cause more harm than good...and they don't smell so mediciney...keeps your baby smelling like a baby!

Good luck!

As a Massage Therapist yourself you are probably aware of a lot of things already. What type of auto-immune disorder does he have? You are already doing a great thing and adding in pro-biotics but the dose may not be enough and you may be lacking some other good bacteria as well. Have you tried this? Bath him and then be sure to dry his bottom really well. You might even use a hair dryer on cold and spread his crack and make sure it's very dry. Then put a thick coat of a very thick diaper creme on him (use one that is more paste-like over a cream. The creams are too thin). There's a brand called Dr. XXX butt paste, which is actually good. Then put a thick coat of vaseline over the paste. When you clean him the vasoline will come off, but the layer of paste will still be protecting him. Then reapply the paste to spots needed and smear him all over with vasoline again. Good luck!

I just wanted to add that my kids' ped told me that if your baby has a yeast infection putting any of the creams with zinc oxide in them will just make the yeast worse. (It locks the yeasties against the skin--keeps that area moist under the cream)

The best advice anyone gave me on diaper rash is to use the Blow Dryer on the bottom on a low and warm setting. I have done this with two children and it works great. The warm air completely drys out the skin, not trapping in moisture like the creams. So after every diaper change and a bath just blow the area dry. Be careful to not burn the skin, just glenty move back and forth and keep back a little ways. Any time my son starts getting red again we give him a bath and dry him out again really good. We haven't used creams in sooooo long, everytime we start again we have another rash. My babies were both breastfed so had to be changed alot. We also used the sensitive skin wipes that help, and Pampers Swaddlers are awesome for absorbing. Hope that helps, I know how frustrating this can be.

Can he have yogurt. Everytime you are on antibotics for an extended period of time, it is a good itea to eat yogurt. Also, check to see if it might be a yeast infection. If so, the yogurt will help with that, but you might need to get a prescription. My daughter has been on constant antibotics since August for a bladder infection that won't go away so I know what it is like. The rash can get pretty bad.

Try patting corn starch on his bottom. It will help dry the rash.
I know you didn't ask, but I'm offering info on the auto-immune disorder. You might try taking your son to a chiropractor. If his spine isn't aligned correctly, the nerves can't "talk" to the organs & the brain, which can cause the auto-immune disorder. The antibiotics help, but they won't correct the problem. Chiropractic care can help his body heal itself, then we won't have to take the antibiotics, then he won't have diarrhea or the rash. I recently took my 23 month old to the Chiropractor for an ear ache. It wasn't infected yet, it was just bothering him. One adjustment is all it took to clear it up. They did a thermal scan, which is like taking your temp, along his spine, & could tell where the adjustment was needed. We go to Dr Ryan Hanson in Edmond. Feel free to call & talk to him about it. ###-###-####. Take care.

My daughter went through this because of antibiotics too. I bought a blow dryer that had a cool setting. I bathed her in plain warm water, no soap, every single time I changed her. I know it sounds like a lot of work and it is. But then I would blow dry her bottom and then slather her down with any very thick and greasy diaper product I could find. So long as I kept her bottom clean and protected and kept soap away from her, we did ok.

Have you tried making your own wipes? I make my daughters and we have had few instances of diaper rash. What you do is take a Bounty paper towel roll (not the select a size) and cut it in half. Find a tupperware holder that fits the round shape. Fill the tupperware with approx 2 cups of hot water and add some baby oil (approx 1 tbsp) add the paper towel roll. When the roll has absorbed all the water remove the cardboard from the center and pull your wipes from the middle.

As far as the rash itself goes I was always told to use straight zinc oxide - I used the Walmart brand which is affordable. Also, if he can be out of his diaper several times daily this would probably help too. Let it air out....

Hope some of this helps:)

Both of my kids had that. My daughters pedi told us to put neosporin, then lotrimin AF cream and desitin on top. The neosporin helps it heal faster, the lotrimin helps get rid of what's causing it and the desitin helps protect it. When we used it my kids' diaper rash cleared up within a day, usually less than that. I would also use the neosporin plus pain relief because it's help it to not hurt so bad. I hope this helps some.

Ok, hang in there with me because I know this is going to sound ridiculous, but this is an old, old, natural remedy. You put some flour (plain old flour) in a pan on the stove and cook it in the pan, stirring frequently until it has a burnt look to it and then when it cools use it on baby's bottom. I know it sounds ridiculous, but an old friend of mine, she is around 87, said they used to use this remedy back in the depression days and it worked. So I tried it on my grandson when he was so raw he could barely moved from teething diareha ? how do you spell that anyway ? lol Anyway, it works.

She says it acts as buffer between skin and urine & waste while healing any rash. She lives in Colorado and finds it at Target and Walmart so that would be the first places to check.
Good luck.
