The antifungals like lotrimin won't help if it is not a fungal rash. Augmentin has a common side effect of diarrhea. I have found Aquaphor works best. Usually keeping her dry is the best thing. If you are brave enough to let her run around with out a diaper has been suggested to me, but i was never that brave. Also I have been told that using aquaphor with cornstarch works as well.

I realize that what I am suggesting is probably extremely inconvenient, but if you have a way to do it - try taking the diaper off when she is awake and inside and let her walk/crawl around without it (soft, dry pants only). Every time she is peeing or pooping, she would need to be changed right away (I would use water only, no wipes or soap, to clean her). If possible, you can put her under running water. Dry her completely by patting her dry (no rubbing). Let her air dry a bit more after you think she is dry. Then apply A&D (again, pat it on her, no rubbing).
I hope she feels better soon.

We always used Bordeaux's Butt Paste and found it worked really well. You could also get a prescription from your doctor if nothing else is working. We had to go that route once when my son was a baby.

Put baking soda in her bath. Put baby powder in her diaper...make sure she doesn't breath in the dust. Then maybe try some foot fungal creme because it is probably yeast from being on the antibiotic.

Besides the Zinc powder and cream ointments. The best thing to do is change the diaper even if it is not really messy. Don't let even urine sit on the skin more than 10 minutes. You will use double the amounts of diapers. Change even if it don't seem soiled. Don't whipe the skin hard, but try and get it all off with warm cloth instead of wipes with chemicals. Or use pure hypo allergic wipes. Then pat dry lightly.

I have found that of all the diaper creams, the Aveeno is the most natural and also works wonders (per recommendation by my friend). Along with this, if it gets really bad, there is a prescription that is supposed to help out immensely (cream) that my friend has used to get back on track. The other big thing I do is not give as many bath's and also let my son walk around for awhile without a diaper at each change (or whenever you can). hope it helps.

We use Butt Paste for diaper rash and it usually clears it up in a day! If possible to leave the diaper off her for awhile each day and expose the rash to the air to dry out, that will help. Also, I woudl recommend giving your daughter yogurt (if she will eat it). Those antibiotics attack all bacteria in your body, including the good bacteria that live in your gut/intestines. The live/active cultures in yogurt can help to restore that balance of "good bacteria". That might also help her BMs and diaper rash.

There are a zillion responses so I didn't read through them all...Two things I'd recommend and the first is don't use wipes unless you're rinsing them in water first. There's something in most wipes that really stings and if you just use plain water to clean her I think you'll find that the cleaning doesn't hurt as much. Second thing...if you determine it's diaper rash and not a yeast infection my peds recommended mixing diaper ointment with Maalox. There's something soothing about the Maalox and it did seem to help. Hope she's feeling better soon!

call the dr. right away. They will probably give you nistatin (sp) it could be yeast infection. Don't use wipes on her or if you do rinse all the stuff out of it first. Use warm soft paper towels or wash clothe. My son had masive diarhea back in july and this cleared him up right away. Augmentin can do that to kids. Good luck!

This happen to my daughter, they told me to soak her 4 times in the bath with corn sratch or aveeno bath, the key is to let them air dry for a good amount of time, if you can put out a blanket and let them lay there. Also you need to rinse out the baby wipes with water that will not hurt as much when you have to clean them. Then coat their bottom with neosprone, diaper cream, I like aveeno diaper cream, it work so well for us. I hope this helps you with the problem it really worked for me. And my daughter had bleeding sores.

Hi B.,

Since your daughter is taking Augmentin. Augmentin is notorious for giving yeast infections. Only in babies it shows in the form of a diaper rash. Call your pediatrician and explain the reaction. They should know precisely about it since it is so common. They should give you a prescription for some Nystatin cream or an Anti-fungal to clear your poor little babies bottom up. Make sure they chart it that your child is reactive to Augmentin, and let the pharmacy know too so they have it on file. Augmentin is the best for treating ear infections. They will know to take preventative measures in the future while it's being taken. Or find an alternative. Do not use over the counter anti-fungals without a physicians consent. Yeast does not subside always on it's own if it's in the intestines. Get a recommendation for a good children's probiotics. Since yeast thrives on sugar. Try to keep her away from sugars. Feed her lots of yogurt for the acidipholus. Keep any ointments except for the ant-fungal off her bottom. Nothing should be used on her bottom to retain in moisture. Vaseline,Aquaphore, anything petroleum based doesn't let the skin breath and just makes a breeding ground for more yeast.

Sometimes us naturalpaths have to resort to prescription strength anti- fungals because yeast is dangerous to the organs if it's to wide spread. You should only take natural remedy advise from people who are trained naturalpathic or homeopathic practitioners.

Hi there, before being diagnosed with celiac disease, my 14 month old son was having diahhrea 8 times a day and was just raw, bleeding and had sores. I used something called "DRC" - diaper rash creme. It is the BEST, it was the only thing that worked for him, I had tried everything. The DRC had been given to me by a client of mine. I am not exactly sure where you can get it, but I am in Bolingbrook and would be more than happy to give you some that I have. I understand on how frustrating it is to keep spending money on things that don't work, and I can also call my client for you and see where she got it from if you need. Good Luck!

It may be a yeast infection from the antibiotic that will need a prescription strength diaper ointment. Otherwise, Butt-Paste has worked wonders for us (higher zinc than other ointments).

It most likely is a yeast rash and requires special cream. My son used to get it all the time when he was on antibiotics (and he has been on plenty). The cream that they prescribe clears it right up. It does tend to sting a little when it is applied but then makes it feel much better.

Hi B.,
You've already received a zillion responses...so I'm not going to read through all of them and see what all people said. But I swear by Boudreax's Butt Paste. I have used this since birth for both of my daughters. My youngest was also just on Augmentin (finished her last dose this a.m.) and like your daughter had the same reaction with the VERY frequent BM's (diarrhea) and diaper rash. Boudreax's works great and fast!!! My daughter asks for it...she knows when she's "red" and will say, "momma, Boudreax's please?"
IMO all the other diaper rash creams/ointments are a waste of money. Boudreax's is a little more expensive than some, but it works and works quickly. I always have the tub on hand at home and the tubes for the diaper bag. I tend to put on quite a bit...especially at bedtime...as to protect her through the night. Anyway, I can't give enough raves about this product...I've been using it for 4 1/2 years and it has NEVER failed me yet.

It's super creamy, and doesn't get wiped off easily. And we've tried just about everything

Hi B.,

I add my vote to "it's probably a yeast infection caused by the antibiotics" group. If you don't get a Nystatin prescription, you can also try Lotrimin (yes, you know the one, it's for athletes foot/jock itch). At each diaper change, clean her bottom with a warm wash cloth, let it air dry for about 5 minutes. After that, apply a thick coat of Lotrimin (the Target brand is 1/2 the price and has the same active ingredient--buy several tubes, you'll go through it quickly!), let that soak in for a minute or two, then add a thick layer of your fav diaper creme--mine is desitin original, but I think triple paste will work just fine. You'll see it start clearing up within a couple of diaper changes.

Poor sweet girl--it's heartbreaking to see our little ones in such pain! Good luck!

Oh, I feel so bad for you. I went through the same thing with my two year old.

Here are my suggestions for you:

#1. Go to Walgreens and buy Florastor for Kids. It's a good bacteria that you daughter needs to replace the lost bacteria, which is what is giving her diarehia (I'm assuming she's got that too from the Augmentin). I mixed mine in a little big of yougurt and gave it to my son in the morning and at night. It helps a lot.

#2. If you have not been to the pediatrician, you need to get your daughter there this week. You probably need a prescription cream to help with her rash. My son's was so bad the pediatrician finally recommended that we go to a dermatologist, that did the trick.

#3. Buy a HUGE container of vaseline. This sounds weird, but it really helped him. I bought the industrial size vaseline and I would turn his diaper "inside out" and rub the entire diaper area in the vaseline. It helped so much. My sons daycare provider is "old school" and she told me to try it. I don't know why it helped him, but it did.

#4. Get that diaper off of her for at least an hour or two a day. I used to lay out a huge blanket on the floor and let him crawl around on it without a diaper. If she has an accident don't worry about it. Clean it up and move on. AIR IS THE BEST FRIEND FOR YOUR DAUGHTERS BUM RIGHT NOW!

#5. I used to take his diaper off and fan his tush with a paper plate. I know that's sounds weird, but the cool air helped make him a happier kid!

I really hope you get some relief for your daughter.....I know how awful it is. My sons tush had welts, and it was dark dark red and hot all the time. I feel for you. Good luck!

Your poor baby. My son was on antibiotics a lot when he was younger because of ear infections. I used warm wash cloths instead of wipes when he would poop. It seemed to me that the wipes made it worse. I have also used Mustella diaper rash cream. It seems to work the best for him. I do work in a day care and have seen some pretty bad diaper rashes. If it does not get better, I would call the ped. and get a prescription for cream. This seems to clear it up right away. Good luck and I hope it gets better soon.

My Dr. suggested vaseline on the skin first to keep it from burning when they urinate then DRC, and apply them thick. If it's a yeast infection the Nystatin(?) I was told is like any over the counter Yeast infection so go inexpensive. Don't forget the yogurt when on antibiotics helps too! Give her a couple baths a day and a little air time.

I see you have many options here, but my daughter had gotten a bad diaper rash that turned into a yeast infection, her doctor suggested Monistat cream. Just the external cream instead of diaper rash cream. It started working the first day!! Her bottom was so red and hurt her so bad, and by the next day she was so much happier! It took about 3 days of using it for it really to go away, but I would give it a try! Good luck!

When my daughter was on 5 antibiotics back to back for ear infections before ear tubes (bacteria was antibiotic resistant) at 9 months, she had HORRIBLE bms and diaper rash -- we only use Boudreaux's Butt Paste as everything else irritates her (she has VERY sensitive allergic skin) and when it was the worst, we actually had to get a burn cream (Silvadine I think) from her pediatrician to put on first and then the But Paste.

It is only a really bad diaper rash, burn looking? When my daughter was on her most recent antibiotic for bronchitis/ear infection (first one since tubes - 9 months wihtout! yeah!) she ended up with a yeast infection diaper rash on Augmentin followed up by Omniceph. It was more bumpy red rash and bothered her terribly itching and there were some white patches of what looked like diaper cream you couldn't rub off (not an internal yeast infection but an external diaper one). Doc prescribed an anti-fungal from the pharmacist and it cleared it right up.

Either way, make sure she is DRY before rediapering...if you have to do a quick diaper change...blow air on her area with your mouth till she is dry before rediapering. Otherwise, it will make it worse.

Might also try a probiotic to counteract the harsh effect of the antibiotic so her bms aren't so bad. They make them for kiddos her age. Or, feed her yogurt which contains the good bacterial cultures.

Good luck!

I have been there! I know this is going to sound crazy but I have used it with both of my boys and it is the only thing that has ever worked. Take regular baking flour and put it in a frying pan over low heat. Keep moving the flour around until it turns a light brown (burnt for the most part). Wait for it to cool and out in a ziploc bag. Everytime you change the baby use a warm rag and just dab the butt. Once it is dry sprinkle the flour on her and diaper her up. It won't hurt and it will help clear up the rash.

Good luck and let me know how it goes!

First - whenever I put my children on antibiotics I use Florastor for the duration of the antibiotics and then I move on to another probiotic like Flora Forte or Culturelle (both safe for children, at least I was told that by my doctor) for months and months and months afterwards. I'm guessing the rash started as a dotty red rash and turned into a bright red rash that burns her bottom anytime anything touches it - that is a yeast rash which is common with antibiotic use (I've experienced it with my kids). After a certain point the rash gets so bad it just can't be taken care of with all natural ingredients (at least I've tried and have not succeeded). The combination my doctor recommends is this: 1 part hydrocortisone (over the counter) one part lamisil (yes, antifungal cream usually used on the feet, over the counter), and one part desitin (the white kind). When I say one part I mean - put a squeeze of each in a cup and mix together, they will not be equal in amounts (you don't want equal because they are all different strengths). I used to use triple paste but my doctor pointed out to me that it has corn starch in it - and even in small amounts corn starch just feeds the rash, so I pitched that. Also - when a child has a rash everyone says make sure you let them air dry as much as possible - if you can use cloth diapers, let her go without a diaper - I've even resorted to blow drying my second son's bottom when I've got to get out of the house to take my first son to school, etc (just make sure it's on the cool setting and held far away from the bottom - but it works great and it's a great preventative thing too! Their bottom just needs to be completely dry before applying the medication/ointments because otherwise you are just trapping more moisture!). Good luck, I feel like I've become an expert on diaper rashes and I have tried everything and sometimes just a warm bath with baking soda with a long air dry afterward does the trick! I hope it gets better soon!

This happened to my son EVERYtime he was on an antibiotic. Hi, I am willing to bet she has a yeast infection! The Augmentin will certainly contribute to that. Is the area red with tiny bumps? If it's not getting better with diaper rash cream, it's almost always a yeast infection. Boys can get them too! Both of my boys have had several (when they were younger). What works very quickly for this can actually be purchased over the counter - Lotrimin AF. IT's just VERY important it's AF, and not just Lotrimin. The "af" is an anti-fungal agent. Also, any over the counter yeast infection cream that women use works great too. Monistat, etc. Just do not put any inside of her, rather just rub the cream all over the infected area a few times a day. You will see a HUGE improvement within 24 hours.

For bath time, we also let his butt dry as long as possible after his bath. They also told us to use a hair dryer (on cool) to dry his butt, but, he did not like that! With using the cotton pads, his rash cleared up in a few days.

If you haven't already...........get rid of the wipes! Use some nice soft, warm wash cloths to clean her up. Gross I know, but those wipes are burning her skin each time you use them and making the rash worse. Put a little baby soap on the washcloth if you have to. You can return to wipes once the rash goes away.

Let her air dry...read, watch her favorite show, as long as you can get her to stay still.

If the skin is broken, don't cake too much cream on...the air is what helps it heal.

Like the other posters said, usually a bad rash has some yeast in there and needs an antifungal.

As soon as my kids bottoms get a little red/irritated I stops the wipes, use a warm washcloth, and the irritation goes away within the next diaper change. I have not had a rash issue in over 3 years!

You should call the doc. It sounds like it is pretty bad. I've had the same issues with my daughter in the past. She has needed Nystatin cream. You can start with either the over the counter that we use for our own yeast infections or the cream for athletes foot. The 2 work differently. In terms of diaper rash cream I have found that BALMEX works the fastest. If it is not a yeast the BALMEX has worked after one application. Hope this helps!
Take Care,
M.

When my daughter who is 18 mos old was recently on antiboitics she developed a really bad rash. They were open sores that would bleed, she was miserable and would brake down crying whenever I came near with a diaper which was often since she also had diarreha. I couldn't even put diaper rash cream on her cause it would sting too. I went to the doctor and she prescribed the ususal but it didn't even kinda help. A friend of mine swears by neposporin she uses it for everything (which is kind of funny) and of course told me to try it; I was desprate so I did and would you know it work! You could try that and see if it works. It wouldn't hurt. Good Luck!

It sounds like you moved beyond diaper rash. It sounds her skin may be "raw" if she if crying at diaper changing and bathing - the water stings. You do not need to put her in a bath everyday. Until the rash clears up or dries up some. Give her sponge baths. The bath water hurts. Like my granny used to say, you can get really clean with a couple inches of water and a bar of soap. With the affected area, wash with very mild soap - like glycerin soap. The heavy diaper creams are not helping. Try using triple antibiotic ointment a couple times then move onto plain vaseline (creamy works best) or AD ointment. AD is great stuff. If she will eat yogurt, have her eat yogurt because it will help her tummy with that heavy antibiotic. My son had alot of ear infections and finally had to say no more antibiotics. I went back to old school remedy my granny used. Keep their head covered all the time, and put a little Sweet Oil on a cotton ball and place in in the affected ear. Also, kids can get ear infections because fluid does not drain properly. Keep their head slightly elevated when they sleep. I used to put book under the top of crib mattress. After I quit the antibiotics and used the old school remedies, he's never had an ear infection.

Antibiotics normally cause diarrhea so I suggest next time she needs some you can request omnicef cause it doesn't cause diarrhea. Right now u can go to any pharmacy and get florastor kids. It will stop further diarrhea. Also the best way to help the rash she has is to let her air out. Let her sit for an hour with no diaper and no cream and she should clear up quickly. If your doctor won't prescribe omnicef in the future always give florastor with antibiotics to prevent this.

For regular diaper rashes, we used the original Desitin (not the creamy kind), after making sure her bottom was dry from the wipe. But, when my child started having a bad rash, the doctor suggested a few things:

*Baths with 1/4 cup baking soda dissolved in warm water. She said make sure to COMPLETELY dry the area before putting anything on (like Desitin, or even a new diaper). She even told us to fan a magazine over her bottom to make sure it was dry.

*Try periods with no diaper on at all. We'd put our child on a waterproof mat and let her "air out".

*Probiotics! Kefir is a popular drink, they also sell powders at Whole Foods. Ask your doctor about this.

Good luck,
M.

My doctor once told me to use mylanta. they said it works like a soothing agent on the butt just like it does for heartburn. the only problem is if there is any sort of little cut, which is quite possible with such bad diaper rash, it will burn. The last time my daughter had horrible diaper rash, the nurse at the pediatrician's office gave me some samples of 'Calmoseptine'. she said it is available at the pharmacy w/o a rx, but they may have to order it. i can attest that is awesome. my daughter had the wors rash, and i did everything for it. when i put the calmoseptine on, it was almost gone by the next diaper change. i would strongly recommend this. ask the doctor or pharmasist about it. it is a miracle butt cure.

With my youngest the only thing that works is plain milk of magnesia and leave the diaper off for about 15 mins after changes if you can stand it the air circulating `helps too. You can get in the pharmacy isle of your local store. It soothes the diaper area just like it would coat your tummy it helps in prevent the yeast infection that will most likely follow. Also try to get her to eat some plain yogurt (activia or 7 generation, brown cow they have the bacterias that need replacing in the digestive tract. I hope she feels better soon.

in response to the woman who suggested a probiotic - good call, but my ped recommended one specifically for kids/babies - Florastor Kids - they sell it at most pharmacy counters without a prescrip. They come in little packets and I just added it to my sons water and he loved it. It helped return his "movements" to a normal state, and also helped with his rash. Although I would still get some sort of topical. I used Aveno rash cream - they also have an oatmeal bath thing that seemed to soothe him in the bath. But next time (hopefully their wont be) I am going to go with the cream from the pharmacy that another woman recommended on here.

Also, if she can be out of her diaper for any amount of time, the open air does wonders!

hope this helps!

She may have a yeast infection. You can give her probiotics, and there is an over the counter cream specifically for that. You could call the pharmasist or dr to check the name, I don't remember off hand.

We have used Butt Paste by Bourdeaux (spelling?). But, we have never had a problem that bad.

Here's a natural thing you can try though. When you child is put on antibiotics, give them "probiotics" as well. This helps replace the bad bacteria that is being killed by the antibiotics and keep the intestins healthy, thus eliminteing the extra bm's that are happening because of the antibiotics. Our daughter was just on anti's for ear infection, and did not get the diahrea this time because we gave her the probiotics. Be careful which probiotics you give though because some do not contain the live cultures that are possitive.

I can give you more information if you send me a message.

Good luck!

Hi B.,
After my daughters 4 ear infection last year, I went to Whole Foods for help with a childrens' probiotic. Skeptical at first - it really works. We use chewable FloraBear for Kids made by RenewLife. I know it also comes in a powdered form to dissolve in a bottle. Went back to plain old Desitin for the rash.
Wound up taking my daughter to one of the top ENT's in the state. I have to say I'm surprised your doc gave your daughter Augmentin. It's usually a last resort b/c of the side effects. youmight want to rethink where you're taking her.
Good Luck.

Bad rashes that don't respond to reg diaper rash cream are usually yeast rashes. As a previous poster said, Lotrimin or any antifungal cream (like you will find in the athlete's foot area) will usually clear it up in a few days.

sounds like a typical yeast infection from antibiotics.

Call your pediatrician. They should be willing to give you a RX without a visit. Just remind them of her being on the augmentin. This is NOT an unusual reaction to medications in toddlers. Over the counter products are not terribly effective....but if you must, try MONOSTAT cream.

Hi B....I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter...it's so hard to see our children in pain. Honestly I've used Aquaphor and I think it's the magic cure. If you haven't tried that already, I definitely would, and if that doesn't work, then I would go to the pediatrician to request something from them.

I wish you the best and I hope your daughter feels better soon!
