There are some good tips on this website. www.pcrm.org It's obviously not natural for your child to be constipated, or have diarhea. Look into a good healthy diet for him and give him the health he deserves. Best wishes.
So my little girl seems to be back to a 100% - no diahrea, no fever and her goofy giggly self.. except for the obvious issue that always happens after diahrea.. why is that such a vicious cycle! one then the other. She's been backed up all day... i am planning to give her as much formula as she wants tomorrow, no brat diet, and get back on to her normal schedule.
When should i be worried about no BM's? After a day, or two should i give her a smidge of prune juice?

D.,
She will get back to normal in a few days. A jar of prunes couldn't hurt either. Does she drink juice? Pear always worked for my son. You can dilute it.
Good luck to Gabby!
Actually if she has just gotten over having a lot of diarhea then she may have such empty intestines that there is nothing to poop out. It may take a couple of days for her to finally have a normal bowel movement and even up to a week is not unusual. My 3yo dd had the flu just a month ago and she didn't have a bowel movement until about 2days after she was done with the diarhea
I would definitely give her a couple days before doing anything! she just spent the last however many days pooping and she probably doesn't have anything left in there! She'll be back to normal in no time, but if in a couple days you feel the need to help her along, then i would go with the prune juice over the syrup.
Poor Gabby -- or should I say, "Poor MOM !" . . . she emptied her intestines out pretty well, so I wouldn't expect her to go again right away -- but do watch. And I think I'd give her some apple juice before I tried prune juice. The pectin in the apples should help some, it tastes better, and it's not as drastic a measure.
And try water, too. Hydration is key to getting the roughage to flow through the system. (kind of like flushing the toilet)
This will be all behind you soon, and you'll be the one handing out the advice !! (won't that be a good feeling !)
I read somewhere (maybe Parent's Magazine) that Karo syrup should be avoided until after age 1 b/c (like Honey) it carries the threat of infant botulism...Not sure how big a threat that is, b/c many doctors still suggest it.
You know your baby...you know when she's uncomfortable w/ constipation, so follow your gut as to when to take action. I suggest pear juice mixed w/ some warm water. Here's something I never knew...all fruits that begin w/ the letter 'p' have a laxative effect. Apple juice actually constipated my son when he was a baby.
When my son was backed up for over 4 days once, my doctor told me to put a tablespoon of Karo corn syrup in his 8 ounce bottle. I was appalled but desperate. Sure enough, it worked! Luckily it never happened again. I would NOT want to give him that much sugar, but it was an emergency.
My daughter has suffered from constipation since she was a baby and I have always been concerned about it till this day. However,dr and nurses dont get concerned unless its like 7-10 days. I took her to a gatroentenolygist and got myralax
So my advice is after a couple days you can give prune juice but mixed with water or I was told Kero syrup or the glycerin suppositories. The prune juice does work better and faster or if concerned after 7 days contact your PED.
Glad she is doing better!
