I really recommend you check out Saving Dinner the Low Carb Way, by Leanne Eli. It's a meal planner for a whole year. She offers a few week's meal plans per season so it is based upon the foods that are in season & available at that time. The book includes shopping lists broken down by store sections & suggestions for side dishes. They're pretty tasty, too. I love this cookbook, it makes it EASY to cook well. She also has a normal Saving Dinner Cookbook that has low carb suggestions for other meals. I love that one, too. You can find them at amazon or most other online book places, I know they're at Flylady.net in their tool shop as well- and buying there supports her excellent services.
Another option is South Beach Diet Cookbook, but that is more for fussy cooking like Sunday dinner, though there are easier things in there. I love their stuffed pork roast -stuffed with fresh herbs & mustard, yum! It's recipes, not focused upon meal planning.
I do meal planning and it really pays off, one trip to the store = less spending because once you're in there to run out for the thing you forgot you end up seeing other things you want and that container of chicken stock turns into a $20 shopping trip! I have learned to use excel, I make a section for each area of the store - produce, dairy, frozen, baking, beverages, canned/other. Then as I need things I add to the list.
But what I found is that this takes a while to get it really going but when you do you'll find you buy a lot of the same stuff & can just keep it on the list. I have a perpetual list that I'd just open & tweak based upon what I was making that week. You know, things like garbage & sandwich bags, cereal, bread, yada yada... It keeps you from having to write the same things over & over again.
Don't forget to check your freezer when you write your list, you can plan your meals around whatever meat has been in Limbo waiting to be cooked, that way your freezer stuff stays fresh. When there's a great buy on certain meats you can stock up & know you won't end up tossing them from freezer burn if you get in this simple habit. Boy did I learn that one the expensive way!
Seriously, you may gulp at the first few times you check out at the grocery store, but that means you have EVERYTHING & won't have any of those costly little trips. Another trick is to make two & freeze one so you have something for those days when you're super busy & know you won't have time to cook. This is particularly helpful when you do this for the crock pot, I plan as much for the crock pot as is possible during the Holiday Season, you know you'll be running, why not use all your mad Suzy-homemaker skills? I toss in the crock pot meal & crank up the bread maker, why else do I have them here taking up SO much room in my precious kitchen?! :) If you make something like stuffed peppers, double up, freeze them (remember to double bag & mark with a SHARPIE, that's the only pen that doesn't come off, and double bags prevent freezer burn better), then you can toss them in the crock pot (I use beef stock instead of water in the bottom for more flavor!) and then you've got a nice dinner with minimal work down the road. When my DH was an apprentice he had to be away from our home for 12+ hours, I used to make his favorite meals & freeze them in Gladware (they stack so nicely & keep freezer burn at bay, the generics don't, I tried them all!). He'd keep it in his van all day long & microwave dinner at the union hall. All these guys would come into the lounge with Taco Bell & McDonald's, and would smell my red beans & rice, then would say they hate him! lol. Because I did menu plans he didn't have to eat that garbage even though he was a 45-minute drive from home. He was proud of me and felt loved because of this simple act. I sound so corny, I know, but those little things matter! Plus we were beyond broke at the time, buying dinner 2 nights a week would've really strained our budget, apprentices don't make a lot of money!
Funny I sat down at the cpu this a.m. to do my menu plan & ended up answering a question about it! Seriously! I sincerely hope this helps you & other cooks. It has saved us so much money and allowed us to eat nicely even when money was beyond tight.
