I am diabetic and my mother is also so it is my priority to find good recipes for us.. I have two cook books that I love 1.) Cooking and Baking for Diabetics by Dr. Hans Hauner and Friedrich Bohlmann
BUT MY FAVORITE COOK BOOK is
Betty Crockers Diabetes Cookbook.. and it has some easy reciepes in it...
I haven't had a chance to use the 1st cookbook but it looks like it has some really good reciepes in it
Hi J.,
It's not about the taste good, it's what you eat period. try going online to diabetic recipes and see if you get anything. or diabetic nurtition. Starches and carbohydrates is what you ent to avoid or use sparringly. Use wheat bread instead of white and learn what all makes sugar, like pasta, potatoes, corn. beer. but I eat what I want and eat before eightpm every night, this keeps your sugar from being high in the mornings. drink a lot of water or cranberry juice to stay flushed
I am diabetic also. I am 24 and still love sweets. My nutritionist said it is not really what you eat it is how much carbs and sugar you take in. Carbs when processed by your body turn into sugar. If your doctor can recommend a good nutritionist, it would be helpful. Also make sure he is checking his blood sugar before and after each meal. That way he knows how certain foods affect his blood sugar. Losing weight if he is overweight is a great idea.
J.,
we found out earlier this year that my husband is diabetic also. He has been watching his diet and he has lost about 35 pounds so far. He was sent to a nutritionist who suggested that he limit his carbohydrates to 4-6 servings per meal. That has been his main strategy and it has worked well. Now that he has lost some weight, he has backed off some of the medication the doctor originally started him on. HE is only 34 so very young to be diabetic. I don't use any particular recipes, but I keep sugar-free syrup around if we are having pancakes/waffles and we drink diet soda. Other than that, I cook as I always have, but try to make our meals a little heavier on the veggies and let my husband make his choices. We still have plenty of carbohydrates but my husband just chooses less of those foods.
