Desperate for Ways to Keep My Son from Wetting Backside of Pants While Pooping

Moms please help!! My son is 3yrs old and has been fully potty trained since just after his second birhtday, we have had this problem on and off since he began using the toilet. While sitting to poop(he stands to pee) he will sometimes pee and it shoots straight out of the toilet and onto the backside of his pants and underwear. I do not know what to tell him to prevent this from happening. It has recently started to get really bad at school, it happens two or three times a week. At home it rarely happens.

I am torn I really feel like I can't discipline him for this because he is doing what he is supposed to and going to the toilet to use the restroom but on the other hand it is happening at school 90% of the time which leads me to believe he is being careless at school.

Is there a trick I can teach him to keep the pee in the toilet until gravity naturally helps him out?

Thanks so much for the advice!!

What can I do next?

Maybe tell him he needs to potty (standing up) before he sits down to poop?

I have a little girl so we don't have this problem but that was the first thought that came to mind.

Good Luck!

Make sure his teachers at school are reminding him to aim proper while sitting as well you would think they would get tired of changing him as well, so they should be eager to help the problem too. Also dont they make potty seats with the boy protection built on the front of the seat to help prevent this, pretty sure I have seen these. At least the undies are protecting the rest of the bathroom, I would rather wash a pair, than wipe down the walls (silver lining).

Had the same problem with step sons. They are grown now and don't do it anymore so there is hope!! The easiest thing to do is have him use his hand to keep his dinker pointed into the toilet. Once he knows this trick it probably won't happen nearly as much. Communicate with teachers also to let them know what you are working on and they will support your method. It is a common problem with lots of boys. Teach him to aim now and you will end up with a happier daughter in law in the future! Good luck!

Yes theres a trick make him point and hold his pee pee down everytime he goes #2 in the potty. My son holds his pee pee down every time he sits on the potty and now there is no pee on my bathroom walls. he may forget but its a great way to keep the pee in the tiolet instead of his clothes or your walls.

Have him hold it down into the toilet while peeing, putting it there initally does not always stop it but holding down the whole time works. My husband hates pee all over so he and my son have always peed this way and I have nice clean bathroom floors and toilets.
It will work.

Hi There,
The same thing happened with my son, The solution was really simple. We had him push down his pee shooter (a one finger job)and close his knees together as a first step of what to do when you need to poo routine, (step two was to "roar"it out like a dinousaur to help things move along. This kept it more fun for my child, but you may want to ommit the roaring since he is at school) a little practice and he'll be good to go.
Good luck

I would ask him to urinate and empty his bladder before sitting to poop. It may be that his pushing causes the release and prevents his ability to hold the pee.
Good luck!

I taught my son to hold it down while he is sitting and it is a habit for him now, and we practiced how to push it down from the base so his fingers wouldn't get wet at all. He only needed reminders from me in the beginning, but he does it all on his own now. I don't know if it will be more difficult to get your son to do this now, since he probably already has some "habits," but all you can do is try.

I have found that anything "potty related" for my son only gets more fun and exciting for him if his Daddy is involved in it. Maybe it is because they have the same equipment, but if Daddy suggests something to him, that is exactly what he wants to do (for example, Daddy is a Marine and he was gone when our son was first potty-trained. I could not get him to "go" standing up no matter how many times I suggested it. But as soon as Daddy got home and he saw Daddy standing, that is what he wanted to do). So you may want to get his Daddy involved in how to handle the "equipment" on the toilet.

Hope you find a solution quickly!:)

I have three boys. I know why this happens. They have to pull their pants and underwear ALL THE WAY DOWN past their knees to sit on the toilet. Otherwise they are sitting on the back of their pants and it will get wet. Just keep saying "all the way down" every time he pulls his pants down. Usually once they start to stand up to pee they realize they don't have to pull their pants all the way down to just go pee, but then they don't do it for poop either. Good luck!

Just tell him to hold down his pee-pee while on the toilet when making poop.

I have a girl, and sometimes when sitting on the toilet to pee, her pee shoots straight out too, instead of "down" in the toilet... so I tell her to push down on her front area, so that the pee shoots downward.... it's worked and now we don't have to worry about pee shooting outside the toilet.

Good luck,
Susan

I have nothing more to add as far as advice, than what they all have said. I just wanted to tell you we have been in the same boat for a while now, and I have the same frustrations. We just have to remind him "are you tucked in?" and really monitor his potty time. I have it happen at least once or twice a month.
Best of luck and remember the extra clothes when out and about

We taught my son how to push down as well.
Maybe it is happening at school more because he is waiting until the last minute and he's rushing to the toilet, not giving himself enough time. Remind him to go the first time he feels the need. Kids often have accidents because they don't want to miss out on anything.
Ask the teacher what time of day it is too. Play time, lunch, group activity, circle time. Some teachers are weird and don't let kids go as soon as they ask.
