Depression During Pregnancy Questions

I have a friend who I've become close to since we are due around the same time. She is concerned about her bouts of depression since starting her second tri-mester. We've had some heart to hearts and I'm worried that her mid-wives aren't taking things as seriously as they should. I'm not that familiar to the area, but I know from talking to her that she would be open to seeing a professional who knows how to handle pregnancy related depression issues, I just don't know where to direct her. Does anyone know of a compassionate, professional who might be able to help in the North dallas area??? Thanks a bunch for any advice!

What can I do next?

I am sorry, I don't know that area of Dallas, so I have no referrals. I agree though and so does my doctor and many other health care professionals that depression through pregnancy can make post partum depression much more difficlut to overcome if left untreated. I know that she can see her regular family physican and they are able to offer some help as well as referrals.

I feel for your friend and hope she gets the care she needs.

I know many midwives that do take this issue seriously, but many that do not see depression as a chemical imbalance that needs help.

Hi K.,
I've heard wonderful things about Ann Dunnewold, located in Dallas. She has a lot of experience working with depression and pregnancy, as well as post-partum depression. I hope that helps! Here is her website:

Hi K.

I don't know alot about the depression or who she could talk to. But I can help you out. I live in Denton/Corinth and I am always looking for friends for my daughter to play with (and even myself). It seems strange to offer friendship over an internet site but most of the people I know don't have kids. So, if you ever get a chance to write give me a shout and maybe our darlings could spend some time playing

Her OB/Gyn can help. She doesn't need to see anyone else. I took something for stress and it helped. I got it from my OB/Gyn.

My name is E. Turner, and I am a Licensed Professional Counseling in Flower Mound at a non-profit agency called Youth and Family Counseling, ###-###-####. I am taking another position in the near future, but will more than likely be with YFC for at least another month and a half. I would be more than happy to meet with your friend. I have experience working with depression, as well as pregnancy (and I am currently pregnant myself, so I can relate on that end).

Whether your friend comes to see me or somebody else, I STRONGLY encourage you to have her see somebody, whether a doctor or a therapist. There are anti-depressants that are safe to take during pregnancy, as well as while breastfeeding after she gives birth. Depression is something that needs to be taken very seriously. It is quite common during and after pregnancy, due to stress, hormones, and life changes, and it doesn't mean anything is 'wrong' with her. It is just something that should be dealt with to make sure it doesn't get worse.

Your friend is lucky to have you. Continue to be there for her, but know that it usually takes professional help to treat depression.
