Hi moms!
I have been on the depo shot for about 5 years having a about 5 month break from it then had about 2 shot after the break now am off it again. this time for good. I got off it in nov. 2009 I have had my period once in dec and again in jan. I have been having a few of the first signs of being pregnant. I am waiting to see if I get my period in feb first before I even think of take the test, because I am thinking this is just part of getting off of it. I was just wondering if any of you moms have had any side effects from being off it and how long it took for any of you to get pregnant. Just looking for any info any of you may have.
Thank you so much for any of your help,
N.

Just wanted to add that I want to add to my family at this point of my life and will not be on any other birth control

What can I do next?

N.,

I did not go straight from depo to preg- I did the patch for a year in between- but once I stopped all BC I was pregnant within three months- I had been on Depo for 8 years prior to that... So while not totally helpful... just trying to say that it really depends how your body responds and really at the end of the day how easily you would get pregnant anyway. Good Luck and have fun trying!!!

I went off depo nearly 15 years ago and did not become pregnant until 08, so I can't help you there. What I can share is that when I went off depo, I had a hormonal pseudo-pregnancy. I was not having sex at that point in my life, so when I developed morning sickness and heartburn after noticing that I was lactating, I knew something was up!
It turned out that the sudden change in my hormone levels tricked my brain for a short time into thinking that I was pregnant.
That was the side effect that I experienced...

When you say you got off it in Nov- was that when you would have been due for your next shot? You are still on it for about 3 months after you got the last shot. When I got off Depo after being on it for 7 years, it was because I was unhappy with the shot. I didn't try to get pregnant immediately. So I don't know how long it would have taken. I got my period about 4 1/2 mos after my last shot, but then it did take about 6 mos before my periods were normal, they would be light, then heavy, then miss, etc... And I had other odd symptoms similar to PMS but at completely random times. Not to say you can't get pregnant immediately after quitting Depo, but it's most likely just your body getting back to normal. Especially since you were on if for a long time, took a short break, then did just 2 more shots. Your body will need some time to adjust.

Hi N.!
Just wanted to respond to your post. I was on the Depo shot for 8 years when we desided we were ready to try to get pregnant. It took us 5 years to get pregnant and then I mis-carried. My doctor then wanted to try "clomid", so we did. I took the first dose and found out I was pregnant again. Of course scared to death, but come to find out we were having "TRIPLETS"!! My dr told us there was a 10% chance we could have twins but NEVER mentioned triplets, but i was thinking that will never happen to me. But it did and I have very healthy troplets. 2boys and 1 girl! I carried them for 35wks 3 days when my water broke. One of my boys weighed 5lbs 5oz girl 4lbs 5oz and my other boy was 4lbs 15oz. We were in he hospital for 6 days then we were able to come home! We were all healthy and thank god everyday for that. All I want to say is dont rush it and try to keep your mind off of it! That was my problem because I wanted kids so bad! I wish you guys the best of luck and will keep you in my prayers!!

Wow. So interesting. I was on Depo for about 5 years. I tried to get pregnant after stopping. Nothing for a whole year. Dr. said I had to give it a year. After the year, she put me on Clomid and I was pregnant the next month, but miscarried at 6-7 weeks. After my cycle returned naturally about 2 months later, she had me try two cycles of "clomid and condoms". Basically, she wanted to boost my hormone levels, but not have me get pregant. After those cycles, we tried with no clomid. I was pregnant the second month and carried my daughter to full term. After baby #1, I used Ortho-tricyclen low...a low dose pill for a while. Then we tried to get pregnant again. I had two miscarriages. They ran a bunch of tests, but all normal hormone levels. Just had to keep trying. Next pregnancy was healthy with baby #2.

Good luck. It's so confusing. The progesterone and estrogen levels get all mixed up on Depo and take some time to fix.

I was on the depo shot for over 3 years. My last shot was January 2008 and we found out I was pregnant February 2009. They say it usually takes between 9 months to a year to get pregnant and for me at least it was right on. I did get my period soon after the shot wore off which was surprising. I still took pregnancy tests every month though because I wasn't sure (I should have bought stock in Clear Blue Easy, haha). Good luck!!
