Delayed Crawling

My 8 month old hates being on his tummy and is making no progress, if not reverse progress toward crawling. Since he learned to roll over, he won't stay on his tummy for more than 5 seconds. He is making great progress toward walking, though. I've heard over and over that if a child never crawls, then they will have learning disabilities. Does anyone have a school aged child that never crawled? How is your child doing in school? Does anyone have a child that walked first, and then crawled later? If we play games that involve crawling, will it help? I've tried everything and have pretty much given up on encouraging tummy time.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, at 10 months, it looks like he might crawl after all. Tummy time still is not an option for him, but he is now getting on all 4s from a sitting position. It is taking a little longer than most babies, but I am happy and comforted that he will crawl at all. The old wives’ tales may be ridiculous, but I was very hopeful that he would develop in the traditional order.

All of the responses brought me great comfort at the time, so thank you!

I never crawled as a baby and neither did my son. I am 25 now and my son is almost 4 and we have never had problems. My daughter we used cheerios to get her to crawl towards them.

Definitly don't worry about it. My son took FOREVER to crawl. The morning he crawled he pulled himself up and cruised the furniture that afternoon. He walked shortly thereafter. My friend's child never crawled at all. I would say enjoy the time that you have with him not moving all over the place! I couldn't wait for my son to walk and now sometimes I think " Gosh, i remember when i could put you down, come back, and you would be in the same spot!" At any rate, I'm sure he's fine. If you need reassurance ask your ped.

My daughter never crawled and was walking at 9 months of age. She is now 12 years old in the 7th grade. She makes straight A's, is in the Gifted and Talented program, and will be taking the SAT test this coming January. No worries!

My 11 year old son never crawled, he hated being on his knees, he went straight to walking. My 13 year old son walked first and then did a little crawling, not even sure you would call it crawling because he would not let his knees touch the floor it was more like he walked on his hands and feet with his bottom in the air, it was actually pretty funny. I have never heard that if they do not crawl they will have problems in school. My 10 year old is an A/B Honor Roll student in excellerated classes and doing very well. My 13 year old is a straight A one B student who is also excelling in his studies. I am sure your baby will be fine.

That's crazy. I never crawled as a baby, and I'm now a lawyer. Don't stress about it.

S.,
I have a 12 week old daughter that absolutely hates tummy time as well. I would very much be interested in hearing some of the responses you get if you would like to share them.

So far, when we lay our daughter on her tummy she:

a)screams and screams
b)lifts her head up to look around
c)will kick with her feet, but gets nowhere
d)makes NO effort to push up with her hands

I have found that she tries more if she is laid on our chests, but if we lay her on a tummy time mat, she absolutely hates it.
Best of luck.

Cheers,
K.

Have you thought they maybe his tummy hurts?
You are right about the delays when crawling is skipped. It has to do with the development of the eyes actually. When kids crawl they build the eye muscles from the distance they are from the ground to looking up. When they skip that stage, they don't build the muscles in the same way and will most likely need glasses for correction.
My youngest daughter was extremely delayed due to some major medical issues. She received therapy for a long time (and still does). We would get those little toys that move along the floor and she would have to crawl after (or make an effort) to get. She did eventually start crawling and started walking shortly after that. But, all her therapists were working very hard on her to crawl first.

For a child to go from sitting to walking without crawling first is normal. Keep in mind that all kids progress differently, my son talked very early but didnt crawl until he was a year old and didnt walk until 18 mo. (and he crawled really funny to like half bear, half crab!) He isnt the most coordinated child but hes on par with his clasmatess. I dint focus on his milestones or push him to achieve quicker results, just that he did reach them within a normal constraint.

Have fun with your baby!

Fisher-Price makes a toy that's supposed to help with crawling. It's a blue monkey that makes noise, gets the baby's attention, and then takes off moving. It stops and gives your baby time to catch up with it, and as soon as he does the monkey takes off again. It's only $15, and my son loves it. We found it at Wal-Mart, and on Target's website. Hope this helps out!

I have an 8 year old son who never crawled. He went straight to walking. He is now in 3rd grade. He has made straight A's in school every year, has been taking/playing piano for four years and started drums last year and added trumpet this year. Everyone told me the same thing about him and he turned out just fine. If you trust your ped. and your ped. isn't concerned then I wouldn't worry about it. Get a second ped. opinion if you think that will make you feel better.

I think that is an old wive's tale. My 12 yr old never crawled. He is perfectly fine, makes high a's...now worries. If he is progressing towards walking then he has control and strength in his body which is what tummy time helps with. Holding up their head, using their arms and legs etc... is where tummy time helps. If he is supporting his weight on his legs then he is doing just fine.

I have heard of a lot of babies that walk first then crawl. I believe that is very common. No worries...enjoy your little guy!

my little girl never crawled. While she is not school age, she is only two, she has no problems in anything. She has done everything before most kids her age. She also hated being on her tummy. It was like an insult to her. We tried all the crawling games, even bought the crawling pooh bear. None of this worked. She walked a few days after she turned 9 months. Stop worrying about it. Some children never crawl.
