Daylight Savings Question

Hi all. Daylight savings always confuses me! It ends this year on Sat March 8th, and I am not sure how to plan bedtime and naptime. My DD is 15 mos old, wakes around 7:30am, and takes 2+ hour nap around 12:30pm.
Do you put your LO to bed earlier to make up for the lost hour of sleep during the night? What time should I schedule her nap as won't it feel an hour off to her? How do I get things to stay on track?

Thanks!

I keep everything the same. After all, we have to adjust to the time change as well. It's hard for the first few days, but they get used to it just like we do.

Hey I.,
My daughter is now 2yo and in the fall when we changed the clocks I just kept her on the same schedule. Same nap time, same bedtime. It seemed like it took her 2 to 3 days to adjust, but she was fine. I think for the spring/summer I'll be getting dark curtains for her room because her windows face West.

PS. I like your "A Little about me" - .....and one large child - my hubby! THAT IS SO TRUE FOR MANY OF US. LOL.

It's just an hour - shouldn't really make a difference. My kids just kind of rolled with it. If they get up earlier then make bedtime a little earlier. It'll work itself out in a day or two. Not a big deal or something you should have to plan for.

Daylight savings actually has the opposite effect for parents than it does for the rest of the world. I don't change a thing about when my kids go to bed, but they sleep "later" because they sleep for the same amount of time they always do and suddenly it's 7:30 instead of 6:30. I always plan naps not by the clock, but by the duration since the previous nap or sleep period. I wouldn't worry about it.

HI I.,
I have been putting my 2yr old to bed a little bit earlier everynight as we get closer to the time change and waking him in the morning a little bit earlier. So I am hoping by the time we get to the 8th he will be in bed close to 6:30 pm & then we spring ahead & it will be 7:30 pm again. I figure the nap will work it's self out. Good Luck M.

I have worried about this too, but so far we have just gone with the flow and stuck to our usual schedule, according to the clock. Usually there are a couple days transition where we move bedtime/naptime by 15-30 minutes. It helps that she has a schedule where she has to go to daycare, so the structure there helps amkes these adjustments.
However, since you SAH, you may have to wake her up a little earlier every day in order to get her to sleep earlier.
The couple of time changes that we've been thru with her have really not been difficult, it all sorts itself in a matter of days. I worried for nothing. But the sun rising earlier every day, THAT is going to be an issue! :)

I think The Sleep Lady recommends sticking as close to the new time as possible, adjusting no more than a half hour if needed.
Guess I better check the calendar for when it's time to change the clocks. :-)
Good luck!

We do the same thing as Liz with both our 3 1/2 year old and our 15 month old. We just start about 3 days earlier adjusting their bedtime in 10 minute increments. Since we are going to be "springing forward" this time we would put them down 10 minutes before their normal bedtime and then the next night 10 minutes before that and the night of the switch 10 minutes earlier so we end putting them to bed a 1/2 hour before their normal bedtime. The next night we just put them to bed at thier normal time which is now an hour ahead. They just seem to absorb the other 1/2 hour over the next few nights. It seems a little confusing but this helps my children and us adjust to the time change. Good luck.

Hi I.,
It's just an hour. I wouldn't worry yourself over it! Babies and kids adjust amazingly well. We travel with our two girls to San Francisco to visit my sister annually and they adjust quickly to the 3 hours difference.

Start a few nights before putting her to bed 15 minutes earlier or so each night. Then she will wake up earlier but by the time the time changes she will wake up on time. If that makes sense at all!! ;)

I've always wondered this too! My son was always off for months every time we changed the clocks!! I'm looking forward to your responses.
