My daughter is 10 and is starting to have pimples. She has one friend in her 4th grade class that has started her period. We have discussed it and I was wondering what products should I go ahead and get so when it happens we are prepared and I am not running around like a chicken with my head cut off freaking out because I have nothing for her. Do you moms have experience with size of pads, brands, etc.

I've always liked the Always maxi with wings (to protect from side-leakage on panties), Playtex Gentle Glide tampons, and Kotex Lightdays pantyliners. Start with pads, she'll let you know when she's ready to try tampons.

Good for you Thin pads with wings, and also some slender tampons in case she wants to try.. Our daughter was 11 when she started he period. by the 3rd month she asked about tampons.. I stood outside of the bathroom door and gave her directions.. She did great.

Even before she started she carried 2 pads in her back pack and I always had "lady things" in my purse..

Dear S.-

I have 3 girls...I started my period VERY young (donkey years ago) at age 9...totally UN prepared by my mom...before...OR after...*sigh*

I vowed I would NOT allow this with "my" girls...so...shortly after 9th bdays...got all KINDS of feminine products...and continued our 'life long from birth' chat about 'bodies' and changes etc.

Anyway, eldest daughter was ALL kinds of prepared...got her some of the slim maxi pads with wings in plastic wrappers...*woo hoo!*

she had them stashed in bathroom...in knap sack...in locker at school...lol

she finally started just a few months shy of 10th bday...and it was...well...'anti climactic'!! lol

I was better with the next daughter in terms of timing...and the maxi thins (regular) with wings seem to suit all...tampons took a while (year or two) for them to even wish to try...

Good on you for being prepared!!

My daughter started having periods around age 11. I carried regular pads with me for her, even when I wasn't having cycles due to pregnancy. It's a good thing I did because she started when we were at a family function and not at home. I just used what I use and it was regular maxi pads.

I had a hysterectomy when daughter was 6 so I was out of the loop a bit on products. I LOVE no monthly cycle and my surgery was the best thing I ever had.... HOWEVER... I could not relay how happy I was/am about that to daughter.

I've been an open book with my daughter all along. I had all kinds of supplies handy for her and let her know it was ok to tell a teach it was a must to see the nurse.

My daughter started in 6th grade at school. She had been prepped so she was not freaked out...she texted me and said....I got my period.

After no more than 2 months with pads she opted for tampons so she could continue to be her active self and be comfy. I am totally ok with that.

She uses pads at night, tampons during the day and a panty liner on some days. She prefer the Tampex Pearl, regular for daily use and she is not picky about pads sinc eshe only wears them at night and around home.

I will say... she is a cheerleader and athletic, not a bit of fat on her body. When she knows it is about time for her to start, she wears her spandex under her jeans, etc. The spandex is a routine item of cheerleaders with the short skirts, shorts, etc.

Oon another note, as a proactive approach, I took her to a great dermatologist to make sure we were on track with our cleansers, etc. I am a Clinique avid user since I was 11 and I am now 49 and pass for early 30's. My daughter also uses all of the Clinique dermatologist recommended products.

Other products the Dr's like are Purpose soap and Cetaphil.

Be there for her.... COMMUNICATE

They have junior tampons and regular. I'd make sure to have that as well as pads. Always makes a thin heavy flow pad. Put them in her bathroom - hopefully you've talked about this with her. She most likely won't start until she has pubic and armpit hair and buds.

Once she starts it's trial and error for what she likes. My youngest didn't try tampons for about 6 months and graduated to super size pretty quickly after that.

I was a very late bloomer... Junior in high school when I started!!! (lucky me, lol) But I was raised by a single father, and was very un-prepared! I was lucky enough to have my first start at school (luckily I caught it before it got messy!) and a friend hooked me up with the essentials. I used pads for the first year, then when I was a senior I had an unexpected change in my cycle, and my friend only had tampons, so I used that... and greatly prefer them.... Something else to look into might be a 'diva cup'... I have never used one, but I have heard good things about them.

Well I was 11 when I started mine so because I was younger I thought sticking a tampon up inside me sounded really scary and weird so you could get some on the junior sizes that I know tampax carries but I bet for right now she will prefer pads. I used to like the Always brand. They have all different kinds so you can have them for every kind of flow. Like they make the extra long ones with wings which are great for overnight. I also likes the ultra thin with wings for the day. They were so thin and comfy but still were good at no leaks. I also like their pantie liners for when I thought I might be about to start so I could put one on before school and then didn't have to worry about having a spot on my pants.

I am very Kotex loyal. Been using both the pads and the tampons since I started my period. They make these light days pads that are wonderful for beginners.

dont make her wear those bulky pads. always with wings-thin. i would not suggest tampons either. i would wait to introduce those. she's still young and she could put it in wrong making it uncomfortable and not to mention the whole "popping the cherry" thing. crude sounding i know i just didn't know how else to say it. she could also leave it in too long and cause intoxima.

Well, I would suggest getting regular sizes, I didn't start using tampons until I was fourteen.

I always use cloth pads I get from etsy.com - super cute and she can pick the fabrics. They work FABULOUS!

All great responses below... I also had earrings and a bracelet with a card/note waiting for my daughter on her day.
