Daughter Is Allergic to Eggs, Very Concerned Regarding the Flu

Hi,
I am feeling stressed because my daughter is allergic to eggs and I am told cannot get the flu shot. With everyone speaking about how the flu can cause death - I feel like a sitting duck.
Are there any alternatives? She is 10 and has cough variant asthma too. The poor thing had the flu back in January which turned out to be multiple weeks and we ended up in the hospital (104 fever second time!) on the day of the big snowstorm - then diagnosed with pneumonia.
Any input - much appreciated.

Dear C., First I am sorry for all your troubles. I will pray for you and your mom. About your daughter, I am sure you are concerned and the media does not help. They love to scare the wits out of us all. I listen to WBAI 99.5. A Dr. was telling us that we should take vitamin D3 to boost our immune system to ward of the H1N1 virus. It seems that D3 is a stronger vitamin D and we never get enough sun to stock up on it. I found it in a health food store. The hand washing and sanitizer is also important. I hope the schols will enforce the cleanliness. Grandma Mary

My daughter also had an egg already, which she did outgrow around 3 years old. However, in stead of the vaccine, I opted for the flumist. You should definitely speak in detail with your pediatrician regarding flumist for seasonal and swine flu since your daughter also has underlying conditions which can (as you have unfortanetly experienced) lead to a more severe flu infection.

I know it's easier said than done, but try not to worry about it like that. As mommas we worry about everything so as to protect our babies, but we have to be careful about letting the media get up in our heads too much. That said, my family doesn't do the flu shot. What we do is boost our immune systems. Vitamin D, Vitamin B, herbs like Echinacea and Goldenseal, rest and hand washing. Remember, we have a great built-in system that knows how to battle germs. We have to just make sure the system is tuned up all the time. Best, AM

my ped told me about Florastor Kids- its acidophilus for children (safe for 2 months and older). Both my daughters (5 months and 3 yrs old) have an egg allergy so they can not get the flu vaccine and the oldest has asthma so she tends to get whatever anybody has. apparently they did a study and foun that ppl who took acidophilus had a reduced risk of getting the flu. so that was what their ped recommended. also the allergist can test the vaccine on their skin to see if they react and if they dont they will sometimes give it. i know my oldest daughter had that with the mmr vaccine bc it is made with something from eggs though its a very small amt. but the allergist is going to do that with the youngest and the flu vaccine (and his office is in the hospital so G-d forbid if anything should happen). good luck!

You might want to see a naturopath and ask them about 'Astragalus' -- Dr. Oz was recently talking about it as an alternative to the Swine Flu vaccine / as an immune booster.

Hi C.,
First off, my prayers go out to you and your family during such a difficult time.
My daughters (8 & 5) are both allergic to eggs. I work at a clinic, so I asked a pediatrician what his take was on this. He suggested that they see an allergist and take it from there. I will do just that. Like another mom said, perhaps an allergist can ease your mind in deciding whether or not to get any flu shots. I also found suggestions from other moms for alternatives very helpful. Good luck!
