My 2 yr old daughter had a cold about four months ago which caused her to clear her throat. Well now she clears her throat all the time. I know exactly when she falls asleep at night because it stops and I know when she wakes up because I hear it start up from the other room. When we talk about it with her she does it more. I'm not sure what I should do because ignoring it isn't stopping it but neither is talking about it. My little brother did this when he was a kid, and it lasted three years, do I just let it continue.

What can I do next?

I agree get rid of the diary for a while. But I also thought it helped my son to give him some chewable vitamin C. You can not over do it with the vit. C so I used it to potty train him. Well, you can over do it but it will give them soft bowel movements. Which was kind of helpful while he was potty training.

I have found that sugar and milk products cause lots of flem in the throat. If you take her off milk (she can have a milk substitute if you wish) and take her off sugar as much as you can. She should be back to normal soon.

I would also not make a huge deal over it. Good luck!

What you describe (especially after her having a "4-month cold") sounds like allergies! It is very common to clear your throat when you have allergies and asthma. I would take her in to have her assessed if you can. An allergist would be the place to go!

Good luck to you and I hope you find a cure soon. :o)

My DS1 had a similar thing happening (his was sniffing) and it turned out to be seasonal allergies. (Coughing/clearing can be a sign of allergy--food or environmental.) Doc put him on Nasacort & the sniffing literally stopped overnight.

Best of luck!

My husband cleared his thoat constantly and after we talked to a doctor we determined it was the way his uvula was irritating his throat. He was clearing his throat because he felt like something was stuck back there. So we had it surgically removed and now he's fine. I'm not saying that your daughter needs surgery, but maybe bring it up to the doctor the next time you go. There could be something that is irratating her throat.

yeah she might just have allergies so I would take her to the doc. to see. But when I was little (maybe around the age of 6 or 7) The same thing happened to me. I got sick and then once I was better I continued to constantly clear my throat. I remember my Mom telling me to stop but it was like a habit....I just couldn't. Then one day in church this lady was speaking and she was constantly clearing her throat. Not to be mean but she was a very unattractive lady. My Mom leaned over to me and said, "do you hear that?" "You sound just like her." I didn't like being compared to this woman at all so I stopped. I know your daughter is too young to have something like that work for her but she might just stop on her own after a while. Good luck.
