Daughter Has a Girly Issue.

My daughter is 3 1/2 yrs. She has been potty trained for over a year. Our problem is that she is always stinky and sore down below. I don't know if it's from bad wiping skills or what. I clean her every morning and she gets a bath. But she always says it hurts and it is red a lot of the time. Needless to say, it isn't always easy for me to clean her there cause she fights me. I don't wan t this to turn into some horrible nightmareish thing she remembers from her childhood. I should also tell you she still wears a pull up at night, but doesn't always pee in it, and we change out of it first thing in hte morning. Has anyone else had these problems with little girls? I don't know why she has this problem.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank You everyone with all your suggestions! I have taken her to the doctor and they ruled out yeast infection, chalking it up to sensitive skin and wiping. We have started the baking soda in the tub and that works wonders!!! Took away the redness immediatley. The doctor said to continue the baking soda, don't use wipes, and she could use a hydrocortisone cream a couple of times a day, along with Desitin as a barrier. Thanks again to everyone, and hopefully we will get this situation under control so she will be comfortable!

I had the same problem when I was a little girl. It sounds like just a yeast infection. I couldn't use bubble bath until I was like 15. I got so many baking soda baths that I knew better than to drink my tea cup, lol! Just sprinkle some in the tub and let her be. I wouldn't try any medications unless the less invasive stuff doesn't work. Good luck!

i just recently learned that pull ups aren't like normal or over night diapers. they don't 'wick' the wetness away from the skin. they are to stay wet to the skin so kids feel the wetness and learn what it feels like to be wet and want to go pee in the potty. so at the times she probably does pee over night, it stays wet against her. either just irritating her or yeast infection. just like when growing up they tell ya not to sit around in a wet bathing suit.
if she needs something over night i would us an actual overnight that is specicially for that. not a training pullup. not sure what type of pull up you were refering to :-)
if she's never had problems with soap and such before, i doubt it's that, initially, but soap then could further irritate it once there is a yeast infection.
i would call your pediatrician and see if they want to see her and what they say.
hope she gets better soon..

my daughter is 3+ yrs. We don't do pull ups at night but she does have the same complaints on occasion that yours does. I notice it more after day care but I think it is because she is allowed to go to the bathroom on her own and wipe on her own there. We just work on the wipe and drop (after one wipe) at home and when I notice she is complaining more I put a little diaper cream on the area before bed and she seems to be fine in the morning. I don't know if it helps - but make sure she is learning to wipe from front to back to decrease risks of infection. We also started doing more showers than baths. She gets bubbles on occasion. I also will just wipe the area with a warm wash cloth with just water on it.

Hello I have a 11 month old and a 5 year old.
Have you gotten this checked with a doctor at all?
It more than likly is from not wiping good enuf.
Just makes sure that you know she is wiping and get a diaper rash ointment. If you know she has been staying dry and she still has it, then I would see your doctor. Your doctor can also give you something to help.

When I was a nanny one of the girls had a similar issue - it turned out to be strep. I was shocked, because I had only heard of strep throat. I agree that she should be seen by her doc - even if it's not yeast or strep he/she can probably give you some ideas on how to help.
Good luck!

Has she been to the doctor because it kind of sound like a yeast infection. If she's been sick and you had her on any antibotics that's a good start to a yeast infection. Even boys can get a yeast infection, my son just got over a bad one.

Two things to know about yeast infections: 1)the doctor would probably make you use a cream to use to get rid of it. 2)Any time your kid(s) are put on antibotics, feed them yogurt. A coworker says that's what she's done since her oldest had one and all her other kids have never had a yeast infection.

Hope this helps!

We had this problem with my daughter when she was younger (less than a year old). The problem may lie within her baths. Try not having any more bubble baths or having any kind of soap stay within the water. Also, a baking soda bath may help a little bit (about 1/2 cup per tub). We did this with our daughter after she was clear of a UTI and we still were having problems. Since doing so, we haven't had the problem come back. Good luck!

little girls can often get UTI (urinary tract infections). If it hurts for her to peeing, then go to your doctor to make sure there is not infection, also push more fluids. sometimes girls are just a little dehydrated and more fluids can fix that. Now the last thing is, if she is red and sore you can use lotrimin over the counter. It may say antifungal cream, at us what you need. Her redness may just be a yeast infection and that cream will take care of it. Hope this helps!

I had a very similar problem with my daughter who is now 11 when she was about that age. The culprit was yeast. Buy one of those over the counter yeast medications( the cream kind, not the prepackaged suppository or prefilled tubes kind}. Apply it to her externally a couple of times a day and especially at night. The back of the yeast medication says it is not for children but my pediatrician told me to use it and said it's perfectly safe to use externally(not internally). Also if she likes yogurt, giving her some daily may help. I would definately get rid of the pull-up at night. If it is yeast, I'm sure that's compounding the problem. If this doesn't help after a week or so, i would see your doctor. I hope that helps.

There may be a possibility that your daughter is allergic to materials in the pullups/and or the soap you use to clean her. My youngest experienced similar conditions when she was 3 and wearing pullups. I switched her to the pampers brand pullups and also switched my bath soap and the condition went away. Hopefully you find the answer soon. If that doesn't help, I would consider mentioning it to her pediatrition. Good luck.

It might be a yeast infection. I know what you're thinking, in a child? But it happens, my daughter had one at 7 months old. They are very easy to fix, but I wouldn't recomend diagnosing it yourself or trying different things to fix it. This seems like something that needs to be seen by a doctor, just in case it's something more serious that could be irritated by things you wouldn't even know about. Hope this helps!

I would bet $100 she has a yeast infection. This might sound weird but it is a very common thing. Both of my girls had thrush in the mouth that eventually transfered to a vaginal yeast infection. You definetely don't have to be an adult to get one. Some girls are just yeast-y! Our pediatrician told us to use regular monistat(the external cream only) but I would take your daughter in to her doctor before treating it the first time. I would do it soon because I agree that it could screw her up sexually if she just remembers bad stuff down there from early on. Children are VERY impressionable. Good luck!!

I would highly recommend that you take your daughter to the doctor and have her checked for a yeast infection. I had a friend whose daughter was very prone to yeast infections as a young child. She had to learn very strict wiping and cleaning proceedures to prevent them. Another possibility could be that she is allergic to the scent or dies in the toilet paper you are using.

My youngest also had this problem. We checked with the pediatrician, thinking she had a uti, but he did say it was from poor wiping. His suggestion was to give her a bath--NO BUBBLE Bath-- with a cup of vinegar in the bath water. The bubble bath can irratate that area, and the vinegar helps to neutralize the acid in the urine and make it not so sore. You will want ot check with her Doctor to make sure she doesn't have an infection. Hope this helps.

I feel that you should take your daughter to the doctor. If it is a yeast infection, then treat her. but she is too young to just use anything and guess what it is. A good thing to remember about yeast though is that it grows in moist and warm areas. try and let her dry out before getting her dressed, no bubbles in the tub and nothing other than antibacteria soap (like dial liguid) down there. other things that are said to help are things like wearing only cotton underware and light colored ones. I have had a problem with yeast infections alot in the last couple of years, so I feel that, that could be it. but you don't know unless you take her to the doctor. Good luck and I hope she feels better soon. poor little thing... also an idea, they sell plastic covers for over the bed, so then she doesnt need a pull up and that might help let her breath down there. good luck once again and happy holidays. Also if she screams alot durring applying a medication down there then maybe you should see about getting an oral medication, cause that sometimes happens when the infection is too bad.

I would also suspect a yeast infection. Have your doctor double check to make sure. I would stay clear of any soap for a while and use only natural based soap or plain water. The soaps maybe making the problem worse and not allowing the body to heal itself. Also, if she does have a yeast infection, limit her sugar intake until it clears up. Yeast "feeds" on sugar. You may try getting her on probiotics, which will keep the healthy bacteria levels in her body high which keeps the yeast in check.

Hello N.,
I read your post and two things came to mind. The first is that your daughter could have a bladder or kidney infection. That would explain the smell, pain and redness.
Ask her questions like, does it hurt to go pee? and does it ache below your tummy or in your back?
The other thing, is that she could have an overly "acid" urine, but not a bladder infection. Carrot juice, like Odwalla's brand can be really good to make the body more alkaline and neutralize acids.
I'm a lifelong urology patient and I suffered greatly from bladder infections and incontinence as a kid. You are right to want to do something for your daughter, before she remembers this situation as a traumatic experience.
Take her into the doctor for a urine culture and start from there. Hope this helps!

I have 2 girls ages 5 & 6. We had this issue as well. I t was a yeast infection on one and UTI on the other. Little girls have issues wiping correctly sometimes. We did not cut out soap, but did change to Dove. I was that way as a teen and my Dr. had me switch to Dove. The Dr. said it is not full of dyes and stuff. Also, are the pull-ups a different brand that you usually use? If so that could be it too. We recently tried the "Cool Alert" and my little guy got all red and sore from it, they were no help BTW. With being a mom myself, I'd have her checked by a Dr. 1st and encourage proper wiping. Also I think age 3 would be a good time to explain good touch and bad touch, it might make the Dr. appointment go easier if she knows it is okay for a Dr. to look down there.
I hope this helps :)

Hi there. I don't have a solution as to why your daughter has this problem, but I can help you make her feel better. Take a kleenex and dip it in vaseline. Then wipe her bottom thouroughly. This will keep it from hurting as much when she wipes, and when you clean her.

Good luck!

I am the mother of 5 girls I would say probably a yeast infection or other infection she should be seen by a doctor. However things you can do to prevent reoccurance. Let her eat yogurt a couple of times a week, but it has to have live cultures. Also see if she would like to take a shower rather than a bath. My daughter stopped having problems when she started taking a shower rather than a bath. You might also consider switching laundry detergents she might be sensative to what you use. Otherwise what everyone else has said is true also :) Good luck!

I think it might be more then not properly wiping, it could be an allergic reaction to something--a food or bubble bath solution. I would talk to her doctor and see what they say. And in the mean time stop using bubbles in her bath, if you do. My mom told me when I was little I got rashes alot from bubbles, so I either had dish soap in the tub if I had to have bubbles or I went without bubbles. I dont put bubbles in my kids' bath just in case they are allergic like me. I dont know if it was stinky or not, but I would have her checked for allergies to food.

I have a one daughter. My advice to you is first to take your daughter to the doctor if she's sore. Girls that age can get infections from not wiping themselves the right way like when they go #2. Let the doctor check her out first. I would also say to continue to use baby wipes especially when she does #2 and make sure she learns to wipe from front to back. It took my daughter a long time to learn this also.
