Hi,
My son was just diagnosed as being allergic to both dairy and soy. I am desperate to find some foods that I can take with me (in the diaper bag as snacks or as a quick meal). Anyone know of any brands of food that are dairy AND soy free? Would love to hear from you. Thanks!

Hi A.,

Isn't it amazing how many foods contain or were processed on machines that also process soy and milk?

The easiest snacks are fruits and vegetables: apples, bananas, clementines (easier to peel and not as messy as oranges, though not available as often), grapes, carrots, celery, ...

Here is a link to give you some ideas. The foods on this site are suppose to be dairy- and soy-free:

Good luck,

A., I am in the same boat! We use Neutramigen from Enfamil for formula. For jarred food most of the stage 1 gerber and stage 2 gerber are ok as they are mostly a one veggie or fruit ingredient, keep an eye on the ones that start mixing more flavors like the vegtable beef dinners. Beachnuts ham and pineapple is ok, theres a chicken and sweet potatoe and a turkey and sweet potatoe that are ok, as well as apples and oatmeal, pears and oatmeal, a macaroni vegtable, all soy and milk free. For the Puffs the Sweet Potatoe Gerber ones have no soy or milk and the Target generic bannana ones have no soy or milk. Gerber graduates have jarred apple chunks and carrot chunks that are good for snacks.I found a Maple Arrowroot Cookie in the babyfood isle at Hannaford soy and milk free made by Healthy Times Organic Cookies. A-1 Market in manchester had arrowroot cookies as well that were ok. The Gerber freeze dried apples, pineapples and banannas are all soy and milk free. There is a bunny shapped cracker at target made by Annies that is soy & milk free as well, its like a bunny shaped teddy grahm. Barilla pasta in the yellow boxes (i think its wheat pasta) is soy & milk free.

There is food out there, its just harder to find.Alot of what I found was organic stuff. Also for the milk they will somtimes say Whey not just milk. Out GI told us that "natural ingredients" on a label is usually milk as well.

It is a hard diet to follow, I did it while breast feeding and my 9 month old is still on it, but it is do-able.

Good Luck!

They have a lot of things at whole foods and most are clearly labeled as dairy free, soy free, etc and we also do a lot of shopping at trader joes you can go to both trader joes website and whole foods website and do a search for dairy free and soy free and a list will come up for each and whatever is on both you can make your shopping list from there. Be careful w/ the rice cheese that's out there it has dairy in it.
Edited: We do a combination of rice and hemp milk now that our son is older. He also has celiacs so we have to really watch the things he eats. I recommend Ian's and there are also some frozen baby foods at whole foods and instead of having to read the entire label the put it right on the front any of the top 8 food allergens that are in the products they are very reasonable priced and are tasty.

MSPI Kids (http://mspikids.info/) is a GREAT website for families with milk/soy protein intolerance (which is different that a dairy/soy allergy or lactose intolerance). It lists foods to avoid, other names that dairy and soy can be listed under, recipes, tips on eating out, etc. It's not a medical site, but a family site run by a mom who is also a nurse.
I think it is just a great site and so useful!

good morning A.

My son is allergic to milk also, I buy him Rice Dream to drink and put into his cereal. They also have Rice Dream ice cream and there are other things in the natural food section. It is sad that it cost more than foods with milk in it, but our children are worth it. Also, check the ingredients of the foods you buy. I couldn't believe that there is Milk in spaghetti sauce.

Hi A.
My two girls have multiple food allergies, including dairy and soy. You can find some listed at http://www.kidswithfoodallergies.org/marketplace-foods.html

Not too familiar with specialty shops in your area but if you are ever out Westborough way there is a place called Simple Enough Natural Foods on Lyman Street where we pick up a lot of products. And in Worcester, The Living Earth on Chandler street.

We find it really hard to find ready to go products that taste good (at least it is for us because we have to exclude a couple more ingredients) We usually cook at home and invested in lots of small food containers and cooler bags with shoulder straps and we pack just about all our food around with us.

Best of luck!
C.

Hi A.,
My son (7 years old) is also on a no Dairy and Soy diet. He has been for over a year (soy) and at least 5 years (dairy). We eat lots of fruits and veggies. We usually don't have a problem, but I know it can be difficult. I read lots and lots of labels! Soy is in everything! But we try not to make a big deal out of it for his sake. The most important thing is to not make him feel like he's missing out or doesn't fit in. We ALL avoid diary and soy for his sake and I think that's really key for him. I find great treats like ice pops, Fruitabu fruit flats and Nature's Choice cereal bars that make him feel like he still gets to eat how the other kids do. I think it makes him a more responsible child (he makes good choices) and knowledgable about how good or not-so-good foods can be for people.
I must say it's MUCH easier to shop for us now than it was several years ago, big grocery stores carry a lot of great products now!
If you need any other advice, please don't hesitate to ask. We've tried almost everything!
Hope that helps,
E.:-)

Also, to help you out check out Yahoo Groups for a support group of other parents in the same boat to help you find your way for foods, what to tell babysitters, teachers and friends on what he can and cannot have (and no 'oh he willbe fine' business from them) what to look for while shopping. If someone gives him a cracker that is made with milk or soy and he gets sick you need to be on top of it.

There are fantastic support groups for just the issues you are dealing with.

A. as far as the diary is concerned, have you tried the acidophilus milk? I had to put my son on it when he was 10 months old because after breast milk, that he couldn't tolerate formulas. During my pregnany with him, for some reason, I was lactase intolerant and it continued for many years after. I think, he in his 30's is just beginning to drink milk, eat pizza etc without taking Lactaid.

A clerk at a health/natural food store should be able to help you select the type of foods that you need for your son.
They have amazing varieties of these sorts of foods.

I know pretzels and Cherrios are dairy free but I am not sure about soy. I would check the labels as you buy these things for soy. You could also check webmd.com as it might give you some other ideas of names to look for on the labels-didn't know whey was a milk based protein until I read up on milk allergies off webmed.
