Curly Hair and Inverted Bobs

I have almost shoulder length curly hair. Not crazy tight curls, but curly enough that I can put some mousse in and have nice ringlets. I really want to cut my hair into an inverted bob, where it is shorter and stacked in the back and longer on the sides. I don't mind straightening my hair each day and with it being shorter, should be pretty quick. Although it does tend to get frizzy sometimes. Does anyone have this type of cut with curly hair? Does it work? I like my stylist, but she doesn't give much advice and even when I ask for something different I walk out looking the same. I feel guilty if I go to someone else, as my hubby and kids see her as well. Thanks for any advice.

So What Happened?

Sooo...I did it! And I LOVE it. It is fairly easy to do. I did go someplace different. I called a friend who also has curly hair like mine (but hers is beautiful). She sent me to her girl, Maggie, who works at Lisa Thomas in Orland. I will still go back to my regular lady for trims, but I felt better going to someone different for a major change. Thanks for all the advice!

J.-

I have the inverted bob and I love it! I have very wavy hair not so much curly. I first blow dry it with a large round brush- which really does a fine job considering the thickness of my hair- and then I just touch it up with the straightener concentrating on the ends and the sides only! because I like the sides to look longer I only do the very front. It takes me maybe 10 mintutes to do in the morning. At first it took longer but once you find out what works for your hair type you get better and faster! Good luck!

I cut off 12 inches off hair into the ever popular inverted bob. I also have decently curly hair, sounds like we pretty much have the same type. I don't regret it but I do miss my long hair just because I could do more with it. People tell me all the time how stylish it is, how it looks good on me, etc. But I will tell you the biggest problem I have, and it drives me nuts, is keeping it straight and curled under in the back. I had no problem doing it with long hair but short hair isn't the same. It tends to get wavy and I really have to work with it to keep it from flipping out. So it's not as quick as I thought it would be. It takes a little longer and time to actually style it. Before it was blow dry, run a curling iron over it, out the door. Now I have to stand with a mirror combing each section and really getting it good with hair spray to keep it from moving/flipping out. But again, I'm happy I did it and I really do like it but don't think it won't take work because it actually does.

The best piece of advice I can give you is to find a better hair stylist, especially if you're going to cut that much hair off. God forbid you take the plunge and do it and she does just an OK job. You really want it sharp and done really well or else you will be very unhappy. Don't feel bad. Sometimes it takes a while to find the right person and it's not like she's going to call you and ask "so where have you been?" Talk to your friends and get referrals to people to see until you've found just the right person.

PS - I use good quality products and I still have this problem. Also, I'm going to wear my hair like this for probably the next few months since I cut it all off anyway, but then I'm going to start growing it back out again.

I have the same kind of hair- was almost to my low back and looked great if I did anything with it.... I decided to go short in the back kindda spiky and the bob in the front. It looks great and the back I can leave in the curls with some styling aide to make it stick up and out- unruly like! and the front I just straighten and tuck behind my ears. The biggest problem I have noticed is, it is high maintenance... I have to get my hair cut every 6 weeks now compared to when I feel like it(once a year if I am lucky)!

As for straightening the back once it is short... it is a pain to do and once you get a little sweaty the bottom will frizz right back into curls or a mess! I am trying to work with that right now until I get my hair cut next week and it looks ridiculous and is tooooo much work since it is shorter... those bottom pieces in your nape are hard to work with and be prepared for burns!

ALso, do not feel the least bit guilty about going somewhere else! Just tell her you had a free coupon for XYZ and that you used it and loved the style if she asks. Maybe she can do follow-up haircuts if you really feel that awful once you have the basic sytle that you want.

Good luck and let us know how your hair turned out!
Blessings to you and yours!

Don't do it! I've tried so many short styles with my hair, convinced that it will look cute, and that I'll really take the time to straighten it if I have to. None of them worked which is really disappointing because I see girls on tv and stuff with shorter styles and I envy them. I've learned my lesson though.

If you really want straight hair and have the money to invest, I recommend Japanese straightening or it's also called rebonding. The only thing is it costs about $500 to get it done here. I had it done while I was in Asia last year and it worked! My hair was so soft and smooth and it lasted until it grew out. I actually walked around with half curly, half straight hair for a while cuz I couldn't bear to cut off that beautiful straight hair :)

If you decide to go for the bob, let us know if it works out, and who you went to see. Always looking for someone who cuts curly hair well...

Hi J.,
I too have shoulder-length curly hair and thought a change would be fun, boy was I wrong! My hair took on a mind of its own! The time it took to straighten was short lived because I would have to re-do it and forget about it if there was any humidity in the forecast.
I think asking around and finding a stylist that will discuss your hair type and what certain styles will do when cut on you is your best bet. There are many different products (personally I like Chi' and JOICO) for us "Curly headed with a little frizzy" girls but a lot of cuts just will not work.
Good Luck!
