I am constantly going behind my husband and my children turning off the lights! If I don't they would have every light on in the house. It doesn't matter how many times you remind them either it's as if they've never heard it before.
I am just curious how many other mothers share this annoyance LOL

What can I do next?

So very annoying.
Even more annoying...my DH, big, strong man that he, always leaves the shower faucet running just a trickle.
He knows it drives me BATTY-but still he does it.
Grrr.

YES! While it happens less now (and sometimes SD would go overboard and be living in the dark), we finally started to tell them that we'd fine them if we caught them with a light on. Nevermind if it was a CF bulb, or if it was daytime and we were running off solar (open the window!), etc. Every light was a $.50 charge at the worst point in getting them to change.

Absolutely!! I finally got the book "Earth Day" by Mercer Mayer (the Little Critter's childrens series). It talks about saving the polar bears by recycling, turning off lights and not running the water while brushing teeth, amongst other things. I read it to my kids (at the time 5 and 2) every night before bed and after about a week, all I had to do was shout "POLAR BEARS!" (if they even forgot in the first place) and they would yell back, OH YEAH! and run to turn off the lights/TV/ ect.

I have to do that too. Not only do I have to turn the lights off in every room my husband has been in I have to also close the cabinet doors as well behind him. Very frustrating! You can turn on the light and open the doors but you can't turn off or close? Then he has the gaul to complain to me about the electric bill....hmmmmmmm.......men!!!

My husband and daughter are pretty good about turning things off except for one light in the kitchen that my husband seems to think needs to be on constantly. I am always turning it off and I swear I go back to the kitchen 5 minutes later and it is miraculously back on. Drives me nuts.

I don't turn the lights off, I make them go back and do it... it sticks with them more when they have to stop what they are doing and go back.

Or, you can charge them a dollar every time they leave the lights on to contribute to the utility bill they are racking up.

It is the same way at my house. I went outside this past weekend because the kids were playing in the garage. Both big garage doors were open as well as the windows and yet they still turned on the lights. Not one, but all of them. My husband comes home during the day and turns on the light to go to the bathroom and we have 3 huge windows in our bathroom. So yes, I think everyone does it by Mommy's.

DH used to have to do that for me, because I just hate being in a dark room. But it finally sunk into my head that leaving the lights on was just the same as throwing money down the toilet. Now, I try to be conscientious about turning them off. We also changed every possible bulb into one of the energy-saving bulbs (the curly/spiral ones--sorry I can't remember their name! maybe halogen?)

funny - yes!! If it makes you feel better, my sister and her husband keep almost every light in their huge house as soon as it's dark. My parents raised us to turn off lights all the time so we don't get it. It's crazy.

OMG, are you married to my husband? I swear, he comes home and closes all the blinds and then turns on EVERY SINGLE LIGHT...even in my boy's room. It kills me. I just walk behind him and turn off every light. Now my 5 year old does the same thing, but ONLY when my husband is home. I keep the house pretty dark, just natural light, and as soon as my hubby walks through the door my hubby and son turn on all the lights. I don't know why it is...he even turns on the light in my BATHROOM...sigh. Good to know it's not just mine.

Same here. My kids tend to leave the basement lights on or their bedroom and my husband will leave our bedroom light on. They go in the bedrooms to get something and don't turn off the lights. Oh, also it can be a beautifully sunny day and bright enough in the house, but the light has to be on. I flick it off and they don't even notice.
I threatened to charge them for every minute they leave lights on.

LOL yep! The bathroom light is a common one!

If you keep going behind them & turning them off yourself, they'll never learn! Make THEM go back & turn them off!

If you are in a house (or if your apartment manager will let you do this...) you could try getting motion sensor switches like this http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-100654964/h_d2/Pr...

I bought a couple a few years ago with plans to put one in the bathroom and one in our daughter's room, but we ended up moving into an apartment. I've saved them for when we do have a house! LOL

That is strange b/c it's usually the other way around (the man goes around turning off the lights, not the woman). Are you the breadwinner? It's usually the breadwinner who notices when money is being "wasted." Anyway, I agree, it's annoying, however, my husband and I don't have that issue.

LOL my husband used to get mad at me for the same thing! So I worked really hard and made it a habit to turn off all the lights when I leave the room. So now sometimes I turn off the light when he is in the shower or reading! When I get the HEY! I smile and say, "Well you wanted me to get better about this now it just a force of habit!"

My kids are pretty young, 3 and 5. I have told them that if Mommy has to use all her money on the light bill, there is no money left for fun, so my little ones make sure to turn off their lights, sometimes they take it a little too far and want all the lights off lol..My daughter will tell my son, turn off your light, you are wasting Mommy's money...this is what works for me. :)

ha ha! We share the same irritation;) I have no idea how to cure a husband of this, but when I was a kid, my parents ended up charging me .25 cents for every light I left on. It created a monster - I can't leave a room without wanting to turn off a light, but it definitely helped me remember;)

I wonder what it would take to install the kind of lights (like in office buildings) that automatically turn off when it no longer senses movement in a room??

Check out TheEnergyDetective.com. best money we ever spent. it hooks up to your fuse box, and then remotely signals to a display in your house and gives you real time readings of what you are spending on electricity. (or at least updated every 20 seconds). we dropped our electric bill in HALF the month we installed it... that and converting most of our ceiling lights to the energy saving bulbs . we paid for the system in 2 months of energy savings. it's also cool - because when you get used to what your reading should be, you can tell without wandering around the house if lights have been left on.
