It sounds like cradle cap. You can get a lotion over the counter to treat it. From personal experience, even if it is just dry skin the cradle cap lotion works well.
Hi Everyone,
My 4 month old has - for lack of better description - a crusty head. You can scrape the crust (dry skin?) off with your fingernails with no adverse reaction from her other than a general feeling of she would rather be somewhere else. The problem with slowly picking at it is that when I do scrape at it, some of her hair seems to come out as well. She only has this problem on the very top of her head (like she had a mohawk). Has anyone dealt with this before and do you know how to get rid of her crusty head short of me scraping it and her hair all off?
Thanks so much

I had to use the stuff for cadle cap or exzema for my sons head. It's in a mint green botle in the baby isle.

It sounds like cradle cap. I had it when I was little and lost all my hair. My kids had it and I put baby oil on their head, put a little cap on then gave them a bath after a few hours.
Hope this helps
hi there, sounds like cradle cap...you can put baby oil on her scalp to moisten the dry skin. after it's moist, take a comb and gently comb out the dry stuff. Then wash with a baby shampoo twice and rinse extra well.
Its probley cradle cap and they have over the counter remedies for it at any drug store.
Sounds like cradle cap. When my kids had it, the pediatrician had us put a little head and shoulders for a minute. Then wash it off and put baby oil on it. Do that three times a day. It'll clear up after a couple days of doing that.
it's called cradle cap and all 3 of my children had it. use head and shoulders, let it sit on there for about 3 mins and then wash it off. then put baby oil on it. it will take a couple of days to finally get rid of it, but it works.
Hi L.,
Sounds like cradle cap to me. My baby had it too at 3 months. It happens because at birth some of your hormones get passed through the imbelical cord and it's basically an excess of oils that build up and the skin's reaction is to dry out which causes the flakes. They look like scales, right? Anyway, it comes back again during puberty but then it's called dandruff. I read in a parenting magazine that the best way to get rid of it is to get some Selson Blue Dandruff Shampoo. (This is perfectly safe for infants. I used it on my baby at 3 months.) Apply it to your baby's head while in the bath and rub the area gently with a wash cloth. Let it sit for about 4-5 minutes and then rinse. Do it 3-4 times a week as symptoms persist. I also followed up with a little hair brushing after the bath to get rid of any flakes that had loosened. The scales were gone in about a week and my baby's head was getting back to normal. And my daughter had it really bad all over the top of her head. Just message me if you have any other questions. Good luck!
L.,
I agree it sounds like cradle cap. They have products at Wal-Mart specifically for it. I would try not to scrape it off though. Good luck to you both! :-)
I also agree that it is cradle cap. I used the baby shampoo and massaged it gently on her scalp with a baby hairbrush, where the flaking was. It took a while for it to completely go away and it did come back but I just did the same thing again and it went away. Be careful if you use head and shoulders, it will hurt her eyes if some gets in them. Good Luck!
She probably has cradle cap. It is a kind of fungus and can spread to eyebrows, etc. Don't worry, it is not serious. Use Head and shoulders and comb through her hair w/ a fine tooth comb. My son also had this and it worked for him. There are also other products, just look in the baby bath section.
Yea it sounds like cradle cap. Both my kids had it also. All I did was wash their head every day and put baby oil on after then brushed their hair/head good. If I washed their hair everyday I never had any problem with it coming back. I would try that before I bought anything special for it. Good luck.
Hi L.!
I think that your daughter might just have cradle cap...when you got home from the hospital they probably sent you with one of those little brushes that are extremely soft? If you "massage" her head while washing her hair with that "brush", the cradle cap will stop soon. This is what happened w/ my munchkin & it lasted until she was about 6 mos. I kept up the brushing and it eventually worked itself out. If it is more than cradle cap, you should probably ask your pedi, as they are the ones best able to handle these issues.
Good luck from someone who has been there!!!
Warmly,
C.
My son also had this, and it sounds like cradle cap. What really worked for him is before washing, we would wet his hair and massage baby oil into the scalp. We would leave it on for several minutes, them comb it several times to loosen up the flakes. We would then wash his hair as usual. This really seem to help him. Good luck.
crawdle cap is what grandmom called it when my eldest hand it. She comb lightly the stuff that had risen then messaged the rest lightly to get off. However she explained it was natural and sometimes came back. Eventually it went away, think its just one of those baby things
It's called Cradle cap. There are shampoos you can buy that are supposed to help (Check out target). My doc told me just to put Vasilene on it.
I think you can actually use baby oil and a soft brush to get it off.
Just shampooing her hair will relieve it. It is called cradle cap and it is common. It will go away sooner or later, but after a shampoo (2 times a week), it lessens. Don't scrape it off! Just gently scrub with your fingers during a bath
Like everyone said, this is cradle cap. My almost 4 month old son had it. He has a head full of hair too, so that doesn't make it much better. I was told to put extra virgin olive oil on his scalp. Massage it in, gently comb through it, then was it out. You may have to wash her hair more than once to get the oil out, but it helps so much. Luckily I just had to do this once and it cleared up and knock on wood it hasn't come back yet. I would be leary of using baby oil just because it has the added scent to it and could have an effect on her delicate skin of her head. I've never heard of using head and shoulders though. Good luck!
