Croup - Arvada, CO

Hi Ladies,
About one month ago my son had a very mild case of croup, you could only hear that barking sound in the midst of normal sounding coughs (if that makes sense). It went away after a week. Now it's back again! Is this normal? As with last time, it is very mild, although he was coughing a lot last night (fortunately, he wasn't bothered by it and didn't cry during the night at all). I know how to treat it, I'm just wondering if its normal that it comes back.
As a side note, when he had the cough about a month ago his top two middle teeth were coming through. This time, the two on either side of the middle are now coming through. Could the cough and teething possibly be related??

What can I do next?

The cough may have not been croup. I have 4 children, two of which have asthma. I would suggest going to the doctor and getting him checked. I am not sure if you possibly changed detergents recently, hand soaps, body soaps or perfumes? Because these things can all trigger coughs like this that are actually a reactive airway disease and not necessarily asthma. Household chemicals often cause these reactions. My oldest son who is almost 9 was hospitalized unable to breathe because of my wonderful MIL and her need to use her items in my home. She is no longer allowed to do that, we only have specific products we allow in our home because our son's lungs were collapsing and every time she comes out here to visit he has to go to the ER, so we have even asked her not to enter our home because she won't comply with simple rules.

OUr little guy gets croup due to improper swallowing. With all the excess drool associated with teething, it's very likely the cause. If it gets to where he can't sleep, you could talk to your doctor about getting a Rx for Xopanex. You can use it through an inhaler adapter rather than having to buy a nebulizer. I wouldn't worry about it too much. If he's getting croup and not a deep cough, that means the saliva isn't getting into his lungs. GL! Hope those teeth come in quickly!

Yes they are related. When teething their immune system is down and they are more likely to get sick.
Each kid is different and react to teething differently. You will learn to read the signs of teething or other things that come your way. Just keep going. If you are really concerned call the DR.

Hey there,
After having at least a dozen bouts with croup in my 4 year old, they had to start putting him on steroids. This seemed to help for longer. His ped. told us that he could be prone to childhood asthma. Also, some children are predisposed to getting croup more often than others if there airway is smaller than average.

Excess slobber with teething can cause a slight cough, not a deep chested cough. I would say he may not have fully gotten over it if it was croup. I would take him in just to make sure his lungs are clear. Before bed put him in a steamy bathroom to help clear up his cough some and a humidifier in his room, prop up his crib if you can (I know some kids move around too much for this to help). Call your Dr, it is better to have them talk to you about it then worry.
