pretty typical for steroids.....it will pass.
My son had croup about a month ago and went through the same thing where they gave him steriods, but he was very aggressive and it took about a week's time for him to gain the appetite back. It was a slow process. That is no fun...poor babies.
The steriods are to blame. They really affect the appetite and behavior in kids. It sometimes just takes awhile to get out of their system also. My oldest has been on them before and the oral sterios (vs. inhaled steriods) make him act horrible ! We don't do them unless he is so bad with his asthma that there is no other choice.
HI P., raising children can sure tire us out. anyway steroids can have the effect of turning little quiet children into wild ones. It is one of the side effects of the medicine. it would help to give your child easy to digest foods, like chicken soup, fruit smoothies, rice cereals. avoid processed foods with msg and extra sugars, that will only stimulate the problem. hope this helps
It is the steroids. My son had croup last year and was put on steroids for his too. He was mean and a totally different child on them. He was that way for about 2 weeks after ending the medicine. It take a while for steroids to wear off. Hopefully it won't be to much longer and he will be back to normal.
If you don't want to call the Dr. for advice about medicine reactions you can speak to your Pharmicist to see if this is a normal side effect.
Hi, my son had croup 5 different times from age 9 months- 5 years old. He was hospitalized all those times. I remember the nebulizer at the ER and IV's. I do remember steroids and loss of appetite. I gave him popsicles and lots of fluids so I don't remember if he ate solid food. Also if your son has croup more than 2 or more times, he will be considered an asthmatic. So you might have to watch him closely when he gets a virus or cold. I don't know how old your child is but it is a serious respiratory infection. If you have any other questions write or ask your peds doctor as soon as possible. Don't feel guilty for calling him constantly because your son can end up in the hospital. So if your MD can treat any infection immediately that is the best way to cure it.
Steroids make a person nervous, agressive, and there are so many better ways to treat croup. My daughter would get croupy at the change from warm to cool weather. We used a humidifier and she never took meds for it. I was diagnosed with Lupus and REFUSED to take the steroids! I used natural ways and recovered. That was 7 years ago and I've had no relapse.
I can understand the agression. I have to take an inhaler, and it has steroids in it. I get jittery, and easily aggitated when I have just taken it. Lots of water and gator aid helps flush the bad stuff out of my system. It is a reaction that many doctors will try to prescribe a medicine for, or put him on a daily pill. Please don't do it. Just naturally flush out his system. Whole grains also combat the agression. Many body builders that use steroids will tell you to eat lots of grains and drink lots of water to help flush most of it out, but not loose the main intention for taking it. I have had to deal with this since 5 years old. Not fun, but I have found ways to cope with it. If he ever has problems breathing, a good solution is open a can of coffee, let him breath in the smell for about five minutes. If this does not work, take him into the bathroom and run the shower on hot, very hot. Close the door and fill the room with steam. That will help almost instantly. Hope this helps.
I don't know much about croup. I have never had neither has my daughter. My sister had it all the time as a child. My mom kept humidifiers all over the house and often sat outside with her in the cold cold winters. Wrapped in warm blankets. She often slept with the windows open. Our ped. recommends keeping the temp in our babies rooms under 68. Between 61-68. We sleep and breathe better with cold air. As to the attitude, I cannot speak. Though to say that I as a child was on steroids. For a different reason. I don't remember being aggressive, maybe irritable.... but at 5, I'd have to ask my mom.
Kids have a really great way of bouncing back. Have you tried a steamer in his room? One of my kids (had 5) had to have steamer most of his life as a baby. But he survived. He's 32 years old and 6' 8", 320 lbs. lol I think steamers work for all kinds of infant respiratory problems. And the steam is natural. I found I could aviod all kinds of meds this way.
