My son has had croup since Monday, and seems to be on the mend but his breathing still seems raspy. It has like a flemmy type of sound to it like he needs to cough. I took him to the doctors again yesterday and they listened to his lungs but said that they sounded fine. They gave me steroids for him to take orally. Has anyone else gone through croup with their child and if so is the raspy sound when breathing something that lingers? He is acting normally. Thanks so much in advance

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for your responses. It made me feel so much better. It always helps to hear from mommies that have gone through the same thing esp. since I am an excessive worrier. Thanks again!

Danielle,
I am a Pedi RN and also have a 2.5 y/o with the same symptoms. The croup can cause some inflammation in the upper airways.
Warm juice helps a lot. Any of the expectorant cough medicines work well- personally I like Robitussin CF. They will help thin out the mucus and make his cough more effective.
Col mist, steam and LOTS of fluids are the absolute best- as is good ol' tincture of time. Viral illnesses can last 5-10 days.

Please feel free to e-mail w/ any questions!

I have 3 kids and two of them get croup quite regularly-it's just the way their bodies work...
Anyway, everything that everyone has said is right-the cough will last a little longer, the "noise" that you are hearing when he breathes is in his throat not the lungs.
But anyway, one suggestion that I didn't see on here but was told to me when our middle child was younger, by an old but incredible ped. in Atlanta- you take them in the bathroom, like one mom said, and let the shower run, make it like a steam room. After you have set in there for 10-15 mins. go outside into the cool night air and it really will clear it up. You will see a big difference almost immediately. I don't know how or why but it really works and has always helped my kids. Hope this helps.

Im a little confused on why they are giving him steroids if its not in his lungs. I have 2 kids with asthma that get the croup all the time. I use Desylum, I think thats how it is spelled, it works wonderfully although it is expensive.

I feel your pain. The good thing is that you can hear the raspy sounds yourself I once had a ped. tell me that normally if it sounds really raspy, the flem is more in the throat than in the chest. Any time my kids have had mucus in their lungs, I actually could not hear it myself. I noticed if they were breathing a little harder, or faster, but not louder. So, most likely, you are just fine. Does he have other cold symptoms that might cause him to be draining down the back of his throat some? If he is acting well, he will be fine in my experience, but I will warn you, this cough could last a little while, and I might ask about breathing treatments if it doesnt get better within a few more days. Good luck and hang in there. Mine were always worse at night, of course, so be prepared and keep the humidifier going. ~A.~

Yes, it takes forever to go away. The mess is probably in his head and throat...not chest. Give him atleast 3 steam baths a day (hold him in your lap in your smallest bathroom with the door closed while you let the shower run on hot for about 15 mins.) This really helps. Also use a vaporizer at night.
Good Luck!

My 14 month old daughter just had that as well. She had the croup for about a week and then it just turned into a cold, and she did still have raspy breathing on and off for a while, maybe another full week or so. She's had the cold that followed her croup for about 2 1/2 weeks. She took steroids too. The doctor said to just use the cool mist humidifier at night, give her Triaminic or something OTC like that, and give her lots to drink. I understand how you feel like it lasts forever! I felt that way too. Thankfully, we're finally on the mend here.
