Critter in the House, Critter in the House!!!!!!

OH. HOLY. MOSES!!!!!

There is a critter in my house. Well not yet but it's working it's way in. I've heard a scratching and rooting sound for the last few nights and then I heard it full on digging around in my pots and pans. I've tried to convince myself it was something outside but it's not, it's definitely inside. I came home from work today and somehow worked up the nerve to pull everything out of the cabinets and found nothing except a space where it might have come in. There aren't any holes but there is a small space between the back of my cabinets and the outside wall of my house and it's open at the top of the back by about 3 inches.....something could definitely root in from the outside and then come up and over into the cabinet. I didn't find any droppings or evidence of a rodent but I did run everything through the dishwasher and then disinfected and bleached the heck out of every surface possible.

I AM SUCH A CITY GIRL!!! I hate this. My landlord is out of town until this weekend so even though I know they will call someone and have it taken care of I have to wait until then. I'm imagining this thing is a gigantic beast with fangs that will knock my cabinet door down and eat me and my cat in our sleep but I'm sure it won't......still taking extra precaution and wedging a chair in front of the door so it doesn't decide to come in for a visit.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So yeah, not a question, more of a 'HOLY CRAP' type situation. The cat is useless, he has absolutely no hunting skills at all and I would have to leave the cabinet doors open for him to get to whatever it is and with a studio apartment I'm not giving it free run of my little space. I could set traps but I'm not going to-it got in somehow so my landlord needs to fix that problem and take care of removing it. Luckily the cabinets are all flush so it can't get under the door, it would actually have to pop it open somehow. Feel free to laugh at my because I would be if I wasn't freaking out.

I would put a glue trap with a little bit of peanut butter in the center and put it in the back of the cupboard. That will attract a lot of critters. Don't over do the peanut butter as you don't want them to be able to spread it around the trap and get off.

Since you didn't really have a question, I don't really have an answer ;) More to share. My wife got up during the night one time to get a drink and walking through the living room she became to scream. I jumped out of bed, turned on the light and in the corner of the living room, there was an opossum! He or she had come in through the doggie door, unbelievable. It made for an exciting few moments. I went to the garage, grabbed a broom and shushed him right back out the doggie door.
Took a while to get back to sleep after that. Good Luck.

Yep, mice can squirm their way through small spaces.

I agree to get some traps and see if it can be captured.. if thee is 1 that means there are 2.. Be prepared. Get about 4 traps for just in case.. Even if you catch 1.. leave the other traps out for a few days.. You can use steel wool to plug up the holes until the landlord does something about this.

Does your landlord have a cell phone? Can you leave a message that you are calling an exterminator because of something in the apartment?

It is most likely a mouse or small critter, equally gross. Go to your local home improvement store and pick up some traps, they make mouse traps where you won’t even see what is inside.

You don't have to wait for your landlord to start the frontal attack right now.
Most super markets will have a pest section with bug sprays, ant traps and MOUSE TRAPS.
I like the cheap snap trap kind - a bag or box of four will cost you under $5 - last time I checked I think I got 4 for $1.79.
I think the sticky traps are cruel - if something's got to die, it should die quick.
Get a jar of peanut butter.
Bait the traps with peanut butter, and set them near where you think the critters are patrolling.
If you are hearing noises, it's a pretty good bet they've found their way to the pantry.
Yes - THEY - there is no such thing as ONE mouse.
Put all boxes, bags, and loose food (jars and cans are already mouse proof) in plastic bins with lids.
With the traps baited and set, check them at regular intervals (wear rubber gloves) then toss out the bodies, re-bait and re-set the traps.
Repeat until the traps turn up empty for at least 2 weeks, and by then the run should be done.
Try to find out where they are coming in.
If you find holes, stuff them with steel wool - the critter's won't chew through it.
We go through this once a year when the field of soybeans next to us are harvested - that's when the beasties try to establish themselves in the house.
If you get right on it, it's over quickly.

put a towel under the door also so it doesn't slip under the door ;)

Buy some traps, they have ones that completely close and you can't see the dead thing in there. Set a few of them up where you are hearing the noises and I bet with in a night or two you will catch the thing.

Im sure that's all your land lord will do also.

Steel wool is your friend! Mice and rats cannot bite through it. So stuff it in the small space.

Do it right away before it gets in! Then we'll have to give you different advice to get rid of it.

Mice scratch loudly and can get in through a hole the size of a dime. They can also jump from up to 12 feet without injury. They hate peppermint, so putting some peppermint oil or peppermint candy near the opening of where you think they are coming in might help.

Moth balls will repel rodents. They don't like the smell. Get some moth balls and put them in the cupboard. You will have to re-wash the dishes and remove anything plastic like Tupperware.
The smell can get over powering so don't use too many. You can tie them in an old sock to make sure the cat doesn't play with them.

I know you already responded yourself but I agree w/you 200%. CANNOT stand critters! We had one miniscule mouse (seriously, I saw a little gray fuzz ball about the size of 2 cotton balls!) in our house a few months ago & I made my husband get offa the couch & we spent about an hour w/o luck trying to get the thing. What eventually worked was putting steel wool, like a brillo or SOS pad in any hole. Never saw the little thing again! My mom's house backs up to a preserved area that brings mice into her house sometimes & an exteriminator told her to do this. The critters don't wanna dig thru the steel wool.

Lmao.. I'm sorry... I'm not trying to laugh you... Really :)

If it's a mouse, it will go under your door... Not through it. Sorry :(

But on the plus side, you have a cat. Don't feed him/her tonight and hope that the problem is taken care of by morning... Though be aware that your cat may place the dead rodent somewhere that you will definitely see it to show it off to you (Cats are weird)

Do you want help or are you just ranting?

Mice can get through a hole the size of a pencil. Yes. A Pencil.
Rats can and will chew through walls to get inside.

It could be a mole, rat, mouse...if it's already in your house, propping a chair against the door isn't going to stop it - sorry.

You have several options -

call an exterminator (yes, I know your land lord is out of town and he's responsible but do you really want this thing crawling into your pots and pans?)

go to home depot or lowes and purchase a can of insulation spray and spray it where you think it (and please keep in mind they usually have a scout and bring the rest....like ants) is coming/getting it.

go to home depot or lowes and purchase a trap.

Not a gigantic beast with fangs - but a rodent with a ton of germs!!!

Until your landlord gets back, you may want to go to Lowe's or Home Depot and check out the expanding spray foam that is made to seals openings. I can't recall the name of it now, but it is a common product.

I don't know if you can use it safely inside. You'll have to read the directions or ask at the store. If you can find the exterior opening, that would be your best place to use this product and seal off the entrance. Probably should check with your landlord before you do it as well.

We used this product in the past to seal cracks and small openings on our exterior when we were having a problem with roof rats getting into our attic. We used it wherever we saw a crack along the foundation or other openings around light fixtures, and so far, we have never had a problem with pests getting into the actual house.

Hope this helps.

when I rented a house that had trees and bushes around it and it butted up to a field, I used to get critters all the time.... I found that getting a snake skin (pet stores or snake owners will be happy to share an old skin - I have snakes so I already had some) and kind of breaking it up into smaller pieces and sprinkling it around where I thought they were getting in kind of deterred them. any rodent will stay away from somewhere if they think that there is a snake there as well...... I think it has something to do with the snake being the hunter and the rodent being the prey. Good luck with getting rid of your critter, and if you want a skin, I happen to have a freshly shed one. :)

Call an exterminator and ask how to handle it. Set traps maybe or put out some sort of poison. I don't know.

Let me just say, I feel your pain. Last night, I was standing in the kitchen and looked down and saw a LIZARD in my house!!!!!!!!!! EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!

You could try taking brillo pads and stuff them in that opening. It's my understanding that rats/mice can't/won't chew through brillo pads. Not sure if it's true, but it's worth a shot!

It's probably a mouse. Bait a trap with peanut butter then at 2am you will here the blissful "thwack!" as it takes out your new friend. Good luck!
