Creative Suggestions to Get My 13 Month Old Daughter to Drink Milk

My daughter is 13 months old today and after her 12 month check I decided it was time to switch from a bottle to a sippy cup for her formula/milk. She was taking 3 bottles a day and it was all formula until around 12 months and then I did a mix for awhile and then all milk. No problems taking milk from a bottle...I do have to admit that it was warm b/c that's the way I have always given her a bottle.
I bought a special new sippy b/c she has used sippy cups since she was around 7 months and I know she is very used to having water/juice in there. She loves her sippy cups, so I just thought it wouldn't be a problem to change to milk in there too.
I was definitely wrong. I have tried a couple different "new" cups, her regular sippy, I've added "flavor", I've even warmed it up. She will occasionally take it from me or daddy if we have it in one of those freezer mugs.
I've been making sure she gets other sources of dairy and that's not too difficult b/c she loves cottage cheese, yogurt and regular cheese, but I don't want to give her too much of that either.
Can anyone relate to what I'm going through and what worked for you?? I'd love any ideas. I'll be contacting her Dr. soon too b/c I'm a bit worried that she's not getting enough calcium and I know how important it is for growth. My daughter eats very well, but is just giving us a very difficult time with drinking her milk.
Thank you so much to any of you who may be able to help.

What can I do next?

I just spoke to my doctor about this same problem. My daughter is a breast baby and she would not take whole milk in a bottle or cup. We found out by mistake one day that she would drink those dannon drinkable yogurts. I asked the doctor is that was ok and she said yes. So I give her two a day and mix a little milk in with them to thin them out. She drinks them just fine. I get the ones for toddlers because I think they ahve less sugar. Just read the bottles. This worked for me, it might work for you. My doctor said it was ok for her to drink the yogurt.

First I understand what you are going through I had the same problem with my daughter who is 2 now. I would mix her formula with whole milk and keep doing that until she finally was just drinking whole milk. I continued to give her a bottle until she was about 14 months old. Really the problem was with me not her. I was so worried that she would not drink enought milk and she was so tiny I did not want her to loose any weight. I talked with the doctor and he told me that when she got thristy she would drink and she did. He also told me as long as she eats yogart then that is a great way to get the calcium she needed so not to worry. I put away all the bottles we went to the store she picked out a sippy cup, I only offered her milk all day long. In about three days she was drinking it fine. It turned out I was the problem not her I just did not give her enough time to get use to drinking the milk out of a cup and I kept going back to the bottle. I think this confused her and made the matter even worse.

I think this is a pretty common problem. I had the same issue with my daughter when we tried to get rid of the bottle (she drank water out of her sippy all of the time). My pedi said to only give her milk in her sippy (no water, juice, etc.) and when she was thirsty enough, she would drink it. Well, my daughter was pretty stubborn. She outlasted me and I caved. Someone recommended giving it to her in a regular cup, which I did and it worked like a charm. It's really messy at that age, but she would drink it, so I just held the cup for her and tipped it so she could drink out of it. I did this for 2-3 weeks until she got used to the milk and then went back to the sippy cup. Then she was fine. It just took a little longer than I thought, but she LOVES milk now, so I think they just get set in their ways about what drink comes out of what cup and you just may have to be a little patient.

Good luck!

I don't know what brand/s of milk you have tried, but my son was going through the same thing at that age, he is now 22 months. I was buying milk from Sam's and Costco and he would take one sip and not drink anymore. One day I decided to buy a half gallon of Borden's milk and he drank it right down and he has been drinking it ever since.

FWIW, my four year old has drank cows milk three times in his life, with horrible reactions each time. He's in the 95% for height, 99% for head circumference, and 70% for weight. He wears a size 6/7 clothes and a size 12 shoes. He knows his alphabet, shapes, colors, can count to 20 and add any set of numbers with sums of 1 - 5....

I say this to say, maybe just quit stressing. She'll live (and grow) without milk. Other than dairy, broccoli is a super source of Calcium. You might try "The best odds diet for toddlers" or "The sneaky chef".

I gave my daughter nothing but COLD milk from the fridge out of a sippy cup. I took about a day and a half for her to realize that was it. Now she loves her cold milk. Good Luck!

My daughter was the same way at that age. She still isnt a big milk drinker but much better. Found out she hated whole milk and had better with 2%. I started drinking milk more cause she always wanted a sip of what I was drinking lol.

We had the same problem with my son. Our ped. told us to stop bottles cold turkey, and after 3 days he would be fine with sippy cups. Well, he was more stubborn than that. After a week of not drinking milk (just water), I was so worried! We tried putting strawberry flavoring in, then decreasing it everyday, and that helped. We also put the milk in water bottles with the spout lids because he loved those, and that helped, too. I think you should not give in and give her a bottle (I know it's hard!). If the freezer mugs are working some, I would keep pushing milk in those. Eventually, she will forget milk always used to come in bottles. Good luck!
