My daughter will be turning 16 this November. She does not have very many friends...so a party is out. She has 6 very close friends and a bunch a people she "just knows". I have asked her several time what she would like to do and I have not received a solid answer any..."I don't know but I want to do something". We have lots family coming from out of town to celebrate and I need an inexpensive, yet creative "something" to do for her birthday. Any ideas????

Thanks Dori...

Al little about my daughter:
she is a honor and A/P student (streight A's). She loves to read books and watch movies. She enjoys 80's music, wants to travel the world and become a doctor. She really doesn't have a "style or a clique" just a mixture of everything (shopping is a challenge). She is a very respectful, responsible, and just a great kid. I am honored and very proud to call her my daughter. I really want to make her birthday all about her because she does so much to help me around the house, cooking (2 nights a week), helps with her younger siser (reading, playing, and watching Chicken Little...over and over again) and most of all she NEVER complains! I just lover her! Right now, I am her mother but, I can't wait to become her friend...in about 3 years.

What can I do next?

Why not invite her close friends over for a spa day. I am a Mary Kay COnsultant and I have done one of these before. I gave the girls makeovers. There were other adults relatives involved and they did hair and nails and different stuff like that. If you think you might be interested Message me!

How about a birthday sweet sixteen "shower". You can all "shower" her with some of her favorite things. Like gift cards to her favorite stores or restaurants, etc... And you can also "shower" her with 16 of something. Everyone can bring sixteen of something, such as sixteen silly socks, sixteen lipbalms, sixteen hair barretts, etc... The sillier the better.

Take Care,
T.

Have you asked the six friends? Maybe they would like to work with you and help with a theme or something. 80's theme with everyone dressing up in 80's style and having 80's music and music videos (MTV was new and big). Everyone is probably saying the same thing. (Oh my gahh, like, duh!)

I don't know if you have the space for a sleep-over if you have out of town company coming in. But, maybe you could take your daughter and one best friend to get "made" up.. or for a fancy manicure or something, then invite the other girls to join up at your house for pizza (and cake) and a sleep-over (well.. movies and popcorn and music and gossip, etc until everyone crashes at 4:30 a.m.). The whole family could come over and have cake together... then go somewhere else (a different relative's house?) for a few hours while your daughter and girlfriends have the house for pizza, doing hair, and hanging out for a few hours. Then you come home to be the "adult presence" around midnight.
If you plan it for a Friday night, you could even do something in the afternoon on Saturday (take them to the beach or a lake for getting some sun, or a matinee movie-- or whatever).

One of the girls that I work with rented the local skating rink for her party-she is even doing the 80's theme and having everyone dress up. I don't think it was expensive and that way you could entertain everyone.

How about a Spa Retreat Escape. I am a Independent BeautiControl Consultant with a mobile spa business.
I could do a pampering session for her and some family and friends. There is not a fee or charge for my services.
I can work with what you and she would like to make it special just for her. I have different ideas.

Hi S. B.
Your daughter sounds an awful lot like my daughter. She just turned 16 in July and we had a nice party for her at Walter Jones Historical Park off Mandarin Road and County Dock Road. We just cooked burgers and dogs and had some sides and even had some vegetarian fare for her friends that gave up meat. Of course we had drinks and birthday cake too. The dock provided entertainment for just about everyone and we just had a good time. There's covered space for picnic tables and a nice boardwalk. We didn't plan any activities (kids are too old for that now!) but the dock and boardwalk was just enough. There were young people but mostly adults there and we just had a good time. About me: Married SAHM of 3 kids--16 y.o girl, 13 y.o boy and 10 y.o. boy.

Why would a party be out? She has some good friends and you say lots of family is coming into town to celebrate. That says party to me! Not really knowing what she's into or what kind of kid she is (i.e. girly for Sweet 16 princess type party or sporty or skater, etc) it's hard to give you ideas that would be suited for her. Can you update and give us a little info about her? What she likes, is into? Usually if I have some info like that it's easier to run with some ideas!

How about taking her to something like a state park that has swimming or letting them play grown up with dinner and a movie with their friends. Since there are six kids the planning would be more managable anyway. Just a suggestion, good luck! Jen

It sounds like you have a wonderful daughter, S.. Congrats on a job well done. :) One of my favorite memories growing up was what my mom did for me the morning of my 16th birthday. She bought a bouquet of 16 roses (you could get your daughter's favorite flower) and she had 16 people write special notes to me and she attached one to each stem. You could have her 6 best friends and your family members each write something special. I opened them and read them as my mom cooked whatever I wanted for breakfast that morning. I can barely remember the party she had for me, but I remember those flowers and how great they made me feel. Good luck!

When I turned 16, my mom did the cutest thing. She had 17 balloons blown up with helium. In each balloon she put a one dollar bill, and in the 17th balloon (for good luck) she put a fifty dollar bill (or twenty, whatever you feel comfortable with), and I had to pop each balloon for the money. I thought it was a cute and different idea. Also, we did a scavenger hunt for another one of my birthdays. She made clues and hid little presents all around the house. I felt she went through a lot of trouble and I really enjoyed it. Hope this is helpful, Good Luck!
