What about a nice cross necklace. Traditionally in our church the Godparents give the child a gold cross to wear. Both my kids wear theirs (only to church for obvious reasons) and they are 1 and 3. I still have mine from my baptizm and I still wear it b/c it is such a classic piece.

My friend's mom made this beautiful bracelet with my daughters name on it. I think she actually gave it to her for her birthday but it would make a beautiful baptism gift. It's been my most favorite gift she's ever received!

It wasn't this exact bracelet, but something like it.

Another, idea is I went to a christian store and found these hankies that can be used as bonnets. Then when the child is married you turn it into a hankie for their "something old" on their wedding day. It has a whole little story in it. I bought both my girls one of these on their baptismal day.

p.s. My oldest daughter got 5 cross necklaces and my youngest got 3.

We did a beautiful silver jewelry box monogrammed with initials when my twin nieces were baptized. They will likely receive several crosses and other jewelry later in life and it's something that he/she will have forever!

maybe get a collection of the before prep (getting ready to go), during and the celebration after pictures. And make a nice, leather bound scrapbook of the occasion.

Does the baby already have a baptismal gown? If not, perhaps your gift could be an heirloom-quality gown that can be passed down through the years.

My daughter's Godmother got her an angel necklace. I got her a little silver box with her name on it. The box safeguards the cross necklace she wore to the ceremony. We also engraved a glass frame with a message and her name on it. You could do the same with a picture of the two of you. There are so many cute things out there it's hard to choose!
