My son is a little over 6 months and weighs about 22 pounds. He hasnt started crawling yet or really expressed much interest in doing so. I was wondering if anyone else had large babies and about when they started crawling.

Thanks!

Hi E.,

My bubba was a big baby almost from the beginning! He, too, didn't do too much crawling when his little peers were beginning--we joked that he was watching their fumbles and didn't want to make mistakes! Then, when he decided to crawl, he just took to it like he'd been doing it all along! He might have been in his 6th month, too, or maybe 7th. He's 2 1/2 now and a skinny guy!!

Don't worry about your son not crawling right now--he may decide not to crawl at all and just walk after a while.

Some babies start crawling later than others. As long as you are putting him on the floor and giving him the oportunity to try to crawl, that is pretty much all you can do. One more thing is to put toys he loves just our of reach for him and make him try to get it and not give it to him just because he cries for it. He will eventually learn to crawl if you do this. He will learn that if he wants something, he will have to try to get it himself and not depend on someone eles to do it for him. It just takes time and understanding.

My son is also 22 pounds and 6 months. He has not crawled yet but does do the rocking back and forth thing which is histerical. Some babied just take longer than others i guess.

My daughter is 9 months and weighs about 23 pounds. She has never "crawled" in the conventional way that we think of. "on hands and knees" She is very strong but prefers to pull herself with her arms and scoot her legs.Just over Christmas she started pulling herself up onto furniture to stand. I was thinking the other day. It seems I hear this worry from alot of new mothers. If you think about it, when we were young we slept on our tummies, which gave us an earlier start at building our "crawling" stance excercises. Now that we encourage sleeping on there back, I believe it takes them longer to develop those muscles. Maybe why so many babies nowadays go straight to creeping or walking.

Some babies don't crawl first, some start out walking. They just don't want to. Once when I was working at a daycare, we had this little guy who wouldn't crawl. One day when he was on the floor playing he just pulled himself up and took about five steps. We were shocked. All babies develop differently. If the doctors say he is developing normally don't worry about it. Instead make sure to exercise his little body, that way when he's ready to move he will have a head start. Good luck.

Hi E.,

My son is 7 months, about 19 lbs and not crawling either. He's really strong on his legs and I think he may just go right into walking in the next couple of months. When I was younger, my twin sister was bigger and could not crawl with her belly hitting the floor, but she walked before I did. I'm not worried about it and I don't think you should either.

Some babies just don't crawl - it's not even really counted as a milestone because of this. Plus there are so many variations on crawling. Both of my little ones were ready to go pretty early, but I know a lot of others that didn't really get moving until even 9 months or more. There was nothing wrong with the babies, they just got a slower start on moving around. My first was sitting at 3.5 months and cruising at 6 - so I sometimes have a mixed-up standard for expections because of my children, but have spent a lot of time around infants and young children and know that's not the norm(day care and early childhood teacher + mom to 2 with 1 more on the way). My daughter was a tiny little thing - only weighed 17 pounds at a year. My son was bigger and he wasn't quite as early with those early skills as my daughter.

My baby girl was tiny (still is at 14 months) and still didn't crawl until she was almost 9 months. It's nothing to worry about. Some babies never crawl at all.

Do you have the book "What to Expect the First Year"? I loved that book. Now I have "What to Expect the Toddler Years". They are really life saver books. haha

My son Nicholas is just about the same age! He is 21 pounds, and his favorite mode of transportation is rolling. He has showed a little interest in crawling, but only lifting his little butt up and moving backwards just a bit! So I totally understand.... I guess they will just move when they are ready!

You are only an hour from me!!! I have a daughter that is now 7 1/2 months and she is not crawling yet either. She is currently 20lbs and she is now about 30 inches long! I wish she would crawl I was wondering when it would happen to cause I woulda thought that by 9 10 months she would be walking with the way she likes to hold her legs. Talk to you later

Hi, My son is big also, 90th% for height and 80th% for weight.

I was very worried about my son being a late crawler at 7 1/2 months--I even posted here asking for advice--but 2 month later (9 1/2 mos) he just took off. My son was getting on all fours and rocking prior to crawling, so see if maybe you can get him in that position.

But many, many mothers assured me that it was fine if they don't crawl.

Also, baby-proof now--we are constantly running around after him and I can't believe I was ever worried!

The actual milestone for crawling is 12 months. If he is starting to sit up and maybe rolling over, you are on target for 6 months. Give him lots of exposure to tummy time.

Hi E.,
I have a 14 month old little boy and he doesn't crawl. He can but he prefers to roll. My pediatrician says a lot of babies just skip crawling and that they all have their own time line of when they'll do things. Try not to compare your son to other children.

Dont worry. My daughter didnt crawl till she was like 10 months old.I thought she would never do it, but on day she just took off.I layed my cell phone on the floor and that is what made her go.LOL.Then came the walking, which was another story. She knew how, and would do it sometimes, and then not.Now she does them both.I guess it is whatever she feels like doing. She is 16 months, and will still crawl, walk run.....Granted she is 23#, yours is 10 months younger than mine and the same weight.LOL.He will crawl, and he will do it overnight.Just be patient, and enjoy it now, cause once they start moving, they will never sit still.
