What paint would you use to paint terra cotta planters?
I want my kids to paint pots for Mother's Day to give to their grandmas but I do not know what type of paint to use.
They are outdoor planters and I don't want the rain or hose water to take the paint off.
Thanks for any help you can offer!
J.

What can I do next?

Acrylic will wash off. I know this for a fact. I did some chairs up for outside.....and since I used Acrylic for my normal art I just used it for this.....Came off.....Faded. Gross.

You could probably go to art store and tell the people what you are looking to do and they will be able to help you with everything.

The Sealant Chipped the paint.....At least off the wood chairs. Again it is the only time I have used it on outside stuff.

Make sure they are clean. I have never sanded a pot for any craft and they are all perfectly fine if sealed correctly. You can use any of the Acrylic arts and crafts paints from Hobby Lobby or some other craft store. Mine are mostly Americana brand but I also have Delta and a few Anita's.

Paint the designs you want then let them completely dry. Once they are dry spray them with an aerosol sealer. If you want a shiny pot use gloss if you want it to not look sealed at all use matte finish. I seal the pot inside and out, it has never hurt any plants I have put in them.

Here is a link to the Hobby Lobby Americana paints:

and here is one to Anita's:

This one is to their Delta paints:

And this one is to the clear sealers, but truthfully I always just by Krylon clean matte finish sealer if I want a matte finish:

Actually, you can use acrylic. However, you need to seal it afterwards. You can get spray sealant form a crafty store. I paint stones and seal them. I have stones that have lasted years, when they are sealed.

Sand the pots well (they must have an almost glossy look). Use a primer as a base coat, if you can. It gives a smooth finish, and holds on to the final paint well, and helps seal the paint from seeping into the pots.. But this step is optional.
Use acrylic colors to paint, and a good 2 coats of sealant to finish.
happy painting to you and kids! :)

Use Enamel, or Acrylic... Just not Tempra. But no matter what kind of paint you decide to use, make sure to buy outdoor clear coat spray paint. It will make your kids' lovely designs stick around for a long time :)

p.s. make sure that you sand the pots down quite well before you get your kids to paint on them. Don't sand around your kids either, its not very healthy to breath that stuff in.

Acrylic with a sealant will work, I've done it.

Or, when you go into the craft or other store you'll be purchasing the paint from, tell the salesperson what you are doing and ask for their recommendations.
