I took my 9 month old to the dr yesterday and was told that he has swollen lymphnodes from cradle cap. Have any of you heard of this? How do I assist in getting rid of the cradle cap? Please help me as my son is scratching the back of his head and not happy...
Thank you for your advice. So far I have used baby oil or Bag balm and then combed his hair out and it has made it a little better already. I have a friend that is in the Melaleuca circle and am looking into that. I will try to update to let everyone know how things are going.

I didn't read all the responses so sorry if this is a duplicate! I tried olive oil before he went to bed putting a cap on all night and that didn't work. So I would put Eucerin Aquaphor (also worked for his baby acne) on his scalp at night with a cap on. Then the next morning I would bathe him and shampoo right away then put baby oil on his head for the remainder of the bath. I would wash it out after I soaped him up and he played for a bit leaving just a little trace in his hair but not so much that it was greasy. It completely went away in about 2 weeks and he smelled so good from the Johnson's baby oil! My doctor recommended using Head and Shoulders but that didn't seem to work for us. Good luck!

When my kids had it I would rub baby oil into their hair to soften the flakes and then rub as much off as I could using a comb and gently rubbing. Then I would use dandruff shampoo.
This would keep it under control.

I read on drgreene.com that you can put a small amount of baby oil onto the scalp and then brush it off. The oil actually soften the cradle cap and loosens it up. It worked for my oldest child. The website has a simple explanation of what this is and why healthy babies get it; however, it did not say anything about how it's associated with swollen lymphnodes. If you get a chance look up the topic on that website.

My son had cradle cap and it was very easy to cure. Go to a pharmacy and buy the over the counter cradle cap medicine. Put it on your baby's head, while in the bath (I did it with him sitting up in the sink, so I could reach his head good) and use a soft brush to pick away at the scales. They come off very easily. You may not get it all the 1st time. Work on it daily and they'll be gone in no time. And it doesn't hurt the baby at all.

Hi A.,
Baby oil works quite well. Dab a little on his head when you bathe him. Just make sure you rinse off the baby oil though! Then after the bath, when his hair is still wet, I use a baby comb, not a brush, and comb his hair. I made sure the comb was close to his scalp so it can come off.
Good luck!

Olive Oil worked great for my kids. Put in on and let sit for as long as he will allow. Then wash off with warm water and the little scrub brush they sent you home with from the hospital (the one they used to wash his head for his first bath). The best part is you know it's safe and all natural!
Good Luck

Sounds pretty far-fetched. I am the mother of four extremely healthy boys, and two of them had cradle cap that seemed to last forever. We tried the neutrogena tar shampoo at the suggestion of our pediatrician, but when that didn't work, the pediatrician told us to just let it be, that it was completely harmless. The nurse at the office said not to let other people's comments get to us, because there are some old-wives-tales attached to it, and some people wrongly think it is a sign of an uncared-for child... and, of course, it just looks yucky. It eventually went away with both kids; one at about 2 years and the other at about 4 years. I even asked their hair lady about it and she said that it was very common in children under 5. I would definitely get a second opinion regarding what your doctor said, or at least do some extensive online research.

my son had minor cradle cap and i massaged a few drops of olive oil on his scalp and used a soft brush (I actually used a mushroom scrub brush - they are soft plastic bristles)to comb it out, you'll see the flakes come out and i took a fine tooth comb to get it out of his hair then i gave him a bath to rinse the oil and the flakes have been gone ever since!
I don't know about the swollen lymphnodes.. i don't see how that is related to a skin problem (shrug)
good luck

My mother-in-law, who has raised 9 children very successfully, gave me this tip, and it really works! Get some olive oil and soak your son's hair with it. Just let it sit there for a while (10, 15, 20 mins) Then either comb the scales out of his hair or use a toothbrush or baby brush to gently scrub his head. This should do just fine, and the oil will wash out with baby shampoo. You can repeat if it doesn't clear up right away. Olive oil is also the best moisturizer, in my opinion, for baby's skin. Hint: get a mild olive oil or your baby will smell like popcorn.

My 4 month old son had a horrible case of cradle cap. I conducted some some research online and found the following advice: lift the scales from his scalp by scratching gently prior to each shampoo, after lifting the scales massage olive oil into his scalp to further loosen the scales, shampoo hair to remove oil buildup (my doctor recommended Selson Blue dandruff shampoo). I also began brushing and massaging his scalp frequently. After a couple of weeks, his cradle cap had completely dissappeared.

When my little one was small she got cradle cap and I puchased a over the counter cradle cap kit at the store. Like Baby's R Us or the like. I think it was by Gerber. Anyway it is a shampoo and a leave in scalp conditioner and a comb. It worked great. You can't be afraid to scub a bit either. You have loosen the flakes. It took about a week. I have never heard of it leading to a infection though.

Dear A.,
My information is below but I have worked in the wellness industry since 1995. One of the first things to do is eliminate mineral oil based products. Most over the counter baby oils are mineral oil based. Mineral oil will clog pores and aggravate skin conditions. As babies, we do not have oil glands until after the first year, year-and-a-half. Use only non fragrance products on him, including his baby wash. The company I represent carries products that are fragrance free, essential oil based, and heal babies skin. If you are interested please write back and I will get you my email address. No obligation. My goal and intention is to first educate and offer alternatives. It is for you to choose.
Hope this helps.

Both my boys had cradle cap- isn't it gross?
The first step is to massage his head with baby oil and then comb his head quite firmly to scrap off the skin. Do this regularly for a few weeks. If this doesn't work, you get to use Head N Shoulders. (My ped. suggested this). It's really just dry scalp/ dandruff. Just scrub in the H & S during bath time and be REALLY careful when rinsing. It can burn the eyes. He won't like being manhandled during bath time but it definitely removes the c. cap.

Wow, never heard of the swollen lymphnodes but my baby girl got cradle cap at 7 months and I think it was from a cheap fleece hat that my mom sent her. It doesn't let her head breathe like cotton does. Anyway, I researched online and the best remedy that works well (cleared up in 3 days) was olive oil. I massaged her scalp with olive oil and used a baby brush to brush the flakes away as gently as I could. I let the olive oil sit on her scalp while she ate her dinner and then washed it away during bath time with a baby shampoo. Really massage and lather that shampoo to break up and wash away all of the oil. I repeated it for a couple nights in a row and it was gone within a few days.
Good luck! M.

Hey A.! I have a now 2 year old who had horrible cradle cap when he was a baby. I tried EVERYTHING and none of it worked. I googled cradle cap and came across this shampoo and tried it and it cleared it up in less then a week! It's awesome! And a little bit goes a long way. He also had ecxzema and it did wonders with that too. It is a bit pricey but like I said, it lasts a long time and he out grew the cradle cap stage before it even ran out! Here's a link to it. It's called moisterizing baby shampoo by The Original Little Sprout.

The products that seem to work for my kids with skin issues as been Arbonne's ABC line. I have a sample packet that I would be more than happy to send you? This way you are not out any money experimenting with other products. Arbonne's products are hypoallergenic and formulated without mineral oil and can be used on the most sensitive of skins.

I have never heard of swollen lymphnodes from cradel cap, but my daughter had it really bad as well. They gave me perscriptions, and said used baby oil (which only made it worse) and the only thing that made it go away was by using a lot of vaseline. Gross I know, but it really worked!
I would massage his head with oil, olive oil from the kitchen, and try to loosen off the dead skin stuff and massage with a very soft brush. If you have ever heard of melaluca oil, a very pure level of tea tree oil, it might be good to look into their home remendy.

Hi,
Put olive oil (much better than baby oil bc it's natural) on his head and let it sit for about 15 minutes and make sure you really rub it in. Then take a comb and you'll see all the flakes come up. Wash his hair twice. Repeat everyday until cradle cap is gone. This really works. Good luck.

HI A.,
I was told cradle cap is from the baby being over heated. He's being bundled up too much. My pediatrician told me to treat cradle cap with a little bit of dandruff shampoo. Rub it on his scalp, leave it on for a few minutes then comb through his hair to help loosen that skin. I haven't heard the part about swollen lympnodes though.

My pediatrician recommended using a little bit of head and sholders shampoo. You've got ot be careful that it doesn't get in their eyes, but after about a week or so, it was totally gone.

Hi there,
I put baby oil on my son's scalp about 20 mins before his bath and let it soak in. This added some much needed moisture to his skin, and it cleared up pretty qickly. Your son sounds like he has a bad case of it, so it may not work, but it is worth a try. I just used a few drops and rubbed it in so that none would drip down into his face. I also only use a drop or two of shampoo and then washed it out, this keeps from drying out his skin to much. Good luck to you, and let me know if it works

Hi A.,
I hope I can help, when my children were young we also experienced the issue of cradle cap. The way I remedied the cradle cap issue was, I would take my baby a bath, and make sure the babies scalp was well soaked, I would then take a bit of baby oil and rub a little bit onto the babies scalp, once the oil was well absorbed, I would take a very fine baby comb and gently comb the baies hair and scalp you will notice bit's of the cradle will end up on the comb. Do this at each bath and your babies cradle cap will slowly go away.

A., I used Head and shoulders dry scalp with both my kids and it did the trick. It only took about 5 shampoos to definetly see the difference. When the shampoo is on massage his scalp and let it sit for a couple of minutes while he plays in the bath. There are stronger shampoos like Neutrogena T-Gel that you can try, but I would start out with something on the mild side like Head and Shoulders. If it's as bad as scratching this should work instead of milder remidies like olive oil.

I have never heard of cradle cap in a child that old; however, the way to take care of it in infants is to use a super soft toothbrush to work baby oil into the dry and scaly skin. Let it sit for about 20 minutes, then wash it out. Don't scrub it out because the oil is what gets rid of the flakey skin. As to the lymph nodes...the doc attributed it to the cradle cap? I would (personally) call the doc to follow up with that theory. Did he/she tell you what to do with the swollen nodes? Add vitamins, etc? Interesting.

my 3 mo old son has the same thing. dr said to try selsun blue 2x a wk, but i thought that made it worse. i have been using the abc baby line from arbonne. but any pure, fragrance free baby line is fine. anyways i have been putting the abc baby line baby oil on his head, i massage it in about 5 min before i bathe him. you can also take a extremely soft baby brush and brush his/her scalp. then i bathe him and i use the abc line hair/body wash all over his body and hair. this removes the oil from the head. then i put the abc line baby lotion on his body, face. if there is really bad stubborn patchy areas on his forehead or scalp i'll either put a little of that same lotion on there even though it will make his head a bit greasy in areas or i'll also use this special cream i found at babies r us called "baby mcderma md" something like that. about $14. i hope this helps. i even used the cradle cap stuff and it doesn't really work. my hairdresser even told me you can use olive oil too.

Hi A.:
Cradle cap is often the symptom of an allergy. Since allergies can now be cured, and in a non-invasive way, without having to put any chemicals in the body, I thought you might like to look into it. You can visit naet.com for more information and to locate an naet certified physician. I love mine and have been cleared of many allergen blockages, and I am absolutely amazed at the breadth of things the body considers allergens, and the unique ways it responds to them. And so have two of my grandchildren, one of whom is a baby, and our doctor cured her allergy to dust and dogs and milk using mommy as a surrogate.
Best wishes,
M.

My 9 month old had cradle cap as well and this is what worked for us. Take Veggie oil and rub some on his head, on the cradle cap, about 15 minutes before you want to bathe him. Then, either just before getting into the bath or in the bath, take a soft toothbrush and gently scrub the spots/cradle cap. then wash is hair as normal. It will take a few times but it got rid of it for us after about 5 baths. Hope this helps.

I agree with the olive oil on the scalp. Let it sit for at least 5 to 10 minutes while he is playing in the tub. Then I would use a cradle cap brush. I got one from Walmart or Target. It's a soft brush you can use to gently scrape the cradle cap off with. If you want you can just use a soft toothbrush. I did this when I washed my kids hair. My pediatrician said that if it doesn't go away then to use Nuetragena T-Gel shampoo a few times a week. This works very well, but is stinky. It is not tear free by any means so you might need some assistance in having someone hold the baby as you rinse it.
