Cradle Cap - Fitchburg,MA

My almost 4 month old son has a terrible case of cradle cap. I brush it with a soft brush every morning and remove the flakes and then use olive oil to soften the cradle cap and then comb it out after about 15 minutes. His head then looks great all day but the problem is it comes back overnight. He's started to scratch so much in the night that he's making his head bleed. I feel so bad for him! Any ideas that have worked for you would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

I was told by my doc not to use any type of oils in their hair when they had it. The flakes are actually a build up of oil. She told me to try head & shoulders or selsun blue(watch the eyes). Within 2 days of using selsun blue it was gone for good!

I agree, warm oil left to soak to remove flakes with fine comb and a mild dandruff shampoo left on for 1-2 minutes to prevent scalp build-up. Both have worked for me.

Some friends in my mom's group recommend coconut oil as a better remedy than olive oil or Aveeno's lotion for cradle cap. And it' edible too in case some drips or gets under his nails.
My son has it too and I just put an all-natural face lotion on it daily to get rid of the dry skin effect and it seems to keep it at bay. I have to add that he has just peach fuzz for hair, so the lotion works well on his scalp.
He too scratches at night and I am hard pressed to keep his finger nails short enough to keep the scratches from bleeding. I bought a baby-sized nail file to try.
Oh, and I have to add that we tried Selsun Blue too and found it way too harsh for his skin and gave the bottle away to an adult.

Hi K., my son also had a brutal case of cradle cap -- I also tried the olive oil soaks (didn't work), over the counter bottled stuff (again didnt work), salves from the health food store (didnt work) I even ended up with prescription shampoo form my Pedi.-- that seemed to help a little, but didnt do the trick -- and my son was also scratching at night to the point where he was causing himself to bleed. He also had red patches all over his forehead, temples and on the sides of his cheeks (definatly exyema). I eventually, after trying all kinds of salves and creams, resorted to using hydrocortizone cream at bedtime and giving him a small dose of benedryl at night--- worked like a charm!! only took a few days befor it started looking better and I backed off the benedryl. be sure you ask you pediatrician, but this was how we cured it. good luck! My son, who is now 5, had the worst cradle cap I ever saw. Turns out, he was allergic to milk, eggs, peanuts and treenuts. At the time I was breastfeeding and those allergens were in my breastmilk, and the cradle cap was just another form of eczema. With hindsight, I just needed to change my diet.

try aquaphor, it's a miracle ointment and is great for everything; cradle cap, eczema, diaper rash and any other skin irritation. The trick is you only need a tiny bit as it is a Vaseline type substance and can be very greasy. I also recommend instead of a brush using a baby comb after applying the aquaphor. It will be able to get the flakes more effectively then the brush.
Here is Aquaphor's website:

Same thing happened with my daughter. Have her tested for allergies. We found out she wa highly allergic to milk and she was on a milk based formula.

Cradle cap is a form of ezcema which is usually allergy related...

By my 3rd child with dry skin issues, I finally realized I needed to stop with the shampoo! They really don't need all the soap and shampoos until they are old enough to get dirty running around and eatting etc. and their scalps manage themselves much better when we are not stripping them with the harshness of shampoo. That is preventative, though. Once they have cradle cap, you need to treat with oils, and then want to shampoo ~ it can become a vicious cycle. If you can get the cradle cap under control, try not shampooing. The children I have that I did not shampoo/soap never got cradle cap and other dry skin issues.

Hi K.,

Both our kids had cradle cap. We had a book that recommended rubbing vegetable oil on the kid's head, letting it sit for at least 10 minutes, and then using a soft brush. While it sounds really gross, it totally works. The kid's not too happy during the process, but the effects are tremendous.

Our son got it worse. We didn't do anything for so long. He's our first and we hoped it would take care of itself, but his hair wasn't really growing! We "basted" him for the first time around 6mo and used a comb to scrape the stuff off, in sheets. One of the most revolting things I've ever done. What an effect though. Only had to do it every couple months after that until it cleared itself up.

Our daughter had it too. We "basted" the baby about once a month from an earlier age and used a toothbrush to rub off the stuff and a comb to get it out of her hair.

Hope this helps! Oh, and you'll need to wash the hair pretty thoroughly to get the rest of the grease out.

Forgive me if this doesn't apply, but my little girl had a terrible case of cradle cap that was seemingly uncurable. At 5 months of age I shaved her head, completely scraped the cradle cap off, put baby oil on it and NEVER had to worry about it again! It was miraculous after all my futile efforts.

My first child had cradle cap. Our doctor told us to wash the hair every day. I would use some type of soft brush like someone said a toothbrush. What I used for treatments was either vaseline or mineral oil rubbed into the scalp. It made the hair very greasy for a couple days, but it was worth it.

I have no idea if anyone has responded to you yet, but I thought I'd through in my two cents.

Gentle Naturals has a cradle cap treatment that worked GREAT on my son. Use a baby brush to really get the stuff in there and scrub...my son's head looked like a bobble head while I was scrubbing...you'll have to use it every day for a bit to get the stuff off, but it worked like nothing else I've seen!

Our pediatrician recommended dandruff shampoo, which worked for us. You just have to be careful to keep it out of his eyes. Once it cleared up, we started using Aveeno baby wash for hair & skin (colloidal oatmeal formula) & it seems to keep everything in check just fine. We only use the dandruff shampoo occasionally, now. Avoid the regular Johnson's shampoo/baby wash. They just don't agree with some kids' skin, despite their popularity.

If it is bleeding, and you notice other areas of his skin are very dry, it could be eczema. Just keep an eye on it and try to see a pediatric dermatologist if is persists.

Good luck!

My three month old son had cradle cap, so what I did was rub vasoline onto his head on the problem area, rub it and then comb out the flakes. Also, you could try using a dandruff shapmoo once or twice a week until it clears up. We used Nuetragina. The shampoo really seems to work.

I had the same problem with my son when he was smaller.. I went to Walmart and bought some stuff.. it is in the baby section... in a green bottle with whinnie the pooh on the front of it.. it is natural care or something like that.. it says cradle cap right on it. You put it in the his hair, use a comb, and comb it the opposite way his hair grows, then let it sit for a few minutes and wash his hair... do that for a few days... it works wonders.. it smells a little weird, but it works. I have a friend whos son had the sane problem just last week.. I told her about it and she used it, and her son doesnt have tit anymore. The bottle costs about 6 or 7 dollars, but it is well worth it...

good luck!

When my daughter was between about 2 months and 6 months she too had awful cradle cap. She never scratched at it though luckily. I bought cradle cap lotion that I found in the store although I don't know if it worked any better than anything else. With that you put it on and then use a soft brush to rub it around. I also gently picked at it throughout the day to try to get rid of any larger chunks. Now she's 14 months and her scalp is extremely dry. We've been mixing in a little baby oil with her conditioner during bath time and it has worked wonders. Have you brought him to the doctor to see if maybe it's not just cradle cap? My daughter also has ezcema which makes her itch.

A lot of time cradle cap is caused by not rinsing the soap enough at bathtime. Try to make sure you get all the soap off his head after washing. Also I agree with trying to put a hat on him at night..that way he won't be able to scratch his head or if he doesn't like hats how 'bout little mittens on his hands.
