I'm desparate i don't know what to do anymore, my baby is scraching himself in the forehead, he is itching,, he is 5 months and a week , I've tried everthing all the moisturizers, please help me
When my son had cradle cap (he was born in 1977), my grandmother massage a little of Johnson's Baby Oil on his scalp. Each time it dryed out a little, I reapplied some more baby oil. He stopped itching, the crusting on the scalp disappeared & was gone within a month. Hope this helps!

My son also had severe cradle cap. He was so bad that he was recommended to a dermatoligist, his was all over his bady by the time he got treated. It's weird, the only thing the Doc. told me to use was hydrocortizone cream .5% and it worked very well acctually. The cradle cap was gone in about 3 to 4 days. The one thing the Doc. told me was do NOT use baby oil because all it does is sit under the cradle cap and will only make it worse and if there is a odor, that is what it is. Also don't try to pick it off just after a bath use a soft brush and gentle brush it. I am telling you after you use the cream a couple of times you will start to notice a difference. Good Luck to you and let me know how it works.

Hello, I would try a natural rememdy like white vinegar and water and just rinse his little head for week and it will ease the itching and probably clear up his scalp. I use it on myself to removed shampoo build up. Sure can't hurt and I found it soothing. Just a 1/4 cup vinegar and the rest water!!! Hope it works for you and baby. J.

Hi A.~
My youngest son had cradle cap on the back of his head but not too bad. Every morning and night I would put Johnsons baby oil all over his head and brush his head/hair with a soft bristle brush - this breaks the scales away from the skin. Yes this makes their hair greasy, but it will soak in after a while and this did the trick for me. I only had to do this for maybe 3 days and it was completely gone and has not come back. I hope this helps! Good Luck!

First, I want to apologize for taking so long to respond to your request. I scrolled throught the first dozen or so responses you received and felt compelled to respond.
Have you tried Arbonne products?? I have had several Moms have great results with their babies using the ABC Baby Products - especially the ABC Hair and Body wash and the Rejuvenating Cream. If you try it and do not get the results you are hoping for there is a $$$ back guarantee.
The problem with many baby products on the market today is that they contact petroleum derivatives such as mineral oil (baby oil is actually mineral oil with fragrance added) that can be drying and very irritating to the skin. Artificial dyes and fragrances can also cause a lot of irritation. Arbonne products are herbally and botanically based and have no artificial dyes or fragrances, animal byproducts or petroleum components and they really work!
If you are interested, I would be happy to mail or drop off samples, information or products for you. I can be reached by email at ____@____.com or by phone at ###-###-####.
Good luck.

A., When my babies had cradle cap (quite a bit of scaling and flaking) I used baby oil to soften it then I would wash it (VERY GENTLY!) with a soft toothbrush to get all the scales off. I found this teqnique worked best while they were very relaxed and cradled in my arms, I would apply the oil with a cotton ball and then like comb the scalp with the toothbrush. After that I would wash the scalp daily with a dandruff shampoo (being VERY careful not to let any of the soap into babys eyes) for about a week. Hope this helps.

Ask your Dr. for a prescription for nizoral (sp?) (Nye-zor-all)shampoo. That is finally what cleared up my sons after fighting it 4 months. It worked in about 3 shampoos (all gone-visable better each time though). You have to be careful not to get it in their eyes though. I wouldn't recommend Head and shoulders or t-gel. Both were too strong.

When my daughter was born, the hospital gave me 'castor oil' shampoo for cradle cap. Around the 2-3-4 months, when she had cradle cap I would put her in the sink and get her scalp wet with warm water, the put on the castor oil shampoo and get a baby brush and use it to scrub her scalp. It all comes off and their little scalp is so fresh, clean & soft. For my second daughter, the hospital did not give my any, so I went to the health food store & bought some & it worked great for her too. Good luck!

My son had the same thing and I also got many people that gave me advice on many things to try even doctors. What I found out was that my son had allergies to food. You may find that your son is allergic to milk and that is why whatever you have tried so far has not worked. I would suggest bringing him to a pediatric allergy specialist and have him tested for food allergies.

In the baby section at Meijer's, there is a cradle cap remover. It is called gentle solutions or something like that. I know it has Gentle in the title and it has Winnie the Pooh on the box. I don't know if you have tried it yet, but the Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Moisture Cream (not the Aveeno Daily Moisture Lotion)worked for me. It only comes in 5 oz. size, and the writing is dark blue. If you call Aveeno, they will even send $1.00 off coupons. I also combed his forehead kinda hard after a bath (to loosen the cradle cap). The combination of the two took care of the problem for us. Hope it works for you.

I than put on a snug fitting baby hat and off to bed. It looks oily when you do it and in the morning . But after a few nights of it - cradle cap was gone and never returned.

Our kids really struggled with cradle cap, too. (Honest, it does go away eventually...). We used Head and Shoulders (I'm sure almost any dandruff shampoo would help) and were really careful not to get it in their eyes. Our doctor recommended baby oil, but I found it almost made it worse. Some baby lotions were OK too, but nothing seemed to really clear it up. We found olive oil seemed to help more than anything. Good luck with it!

Doesn't really sound like cradle cap to me. That is usually on the top of the head, it is kinda thick flakey stuff that you can usually pic off (not that I would recommend that though) when my son got it years ago the doctor just told me to keep rubbing baby oil on it a couple of times a day to soften it up and make to come off and keep the skin moisturized.
Hope this helps!

it will clear up on it's own. olive oil will help to soften the scales and they will rub or fall off when ready. don't pick, scratch, or try to brush it off - the rubbing will irritate the skin even more. moisturizers will make it worse, mineral oils are not recommended. it will take awhile for baby's skin to get balanced, after 9 months in water getting used to air is a transition. hang in there! i know it's hard to look at sometimes.

My son had cradle cap - as did all babies in my family. At 5 mos, he my sleeping through the night or for longer stretches at night. Before bedtime, put a generous amount of baby oil on his head and put on a cap on his head. When he wakes up from a nap and use a baby brush to remove the flaky skin. Continue for as many days as needed. If the cradle cap is really thick, apply oil a few times a day. You'll notice a difference in less than a week. If this tried and true remedy doesn't work, I suggest taking him to your Ped.

Hi A.,
You didn't really give much background as far as if you have taken him to a doctor, or how long this has been going on. The only thing I could suggest is to maybe get him an appointment with his pediatrician. He/she would be best at diagnosising what might be happening and then give you or recommend what to use on it. At 5 months babies skin is still pretty sensitive and so you should be careful what you use.
Hope this helps. Good luck and I hope all turns out well.

Scaly too? What I used was a moisturizer and rubbed it in, then washed the scalp. You may want to find an organic one without any propylene glycol (used in antifreeze). Overly processed products will eventually sink in the skin and can cause trouble. Find a Better Health or Whole Foods store and find some safe, quality products. But that's what I used to do is creme the scalp and lightly scrape the scales off, then shampoo it. Right! A hair conditioner for the first step and then shampoo. If the hair is coming in well, use a comb to comb some of the scales away.
