Ok-I didn't get much of a response before so I am trying again. Any suggestions on how to get rid of cradle cap? My son has it so bad and now that he has lost his hair (4 months)it looks terrible. We have tried the olive oil, Selsum blue, lotion and towel, etc (all the old tricks?) Any other ideas
THANK YOU

We used to put mineral oil on overnight and then use the brush from the hospital with morning bath. You may need to repeat if it is as bad as it sound.
Good luck

We actually used Calenda oil instead of baby oil because our daughter's skin is so sensitive and we do the soft toothbrush thing. She's 13 weeks now and still has a bit of it, but it's definitely helping. You might want to try using a more natural oil because he may be allergic or sensitive to baby oil (I know it's supposed to be safe for babies, but there are babies who have soooper sensitive skin and mine is one of them!).

Leave it alone. It icky looking, its gross, but it's normal. It is caused by a disfunction in the oil glands, which can be made worse by the oils and such that you use to try to get rid of it. This too shall pass. My daughter had a nasty case when she was about that age, but she had a ton of hair, so it looked like she had a really bad case of dandruff :( I know it's hard to leave it alone, but keep it clean and brush it with a baby brush to get rid of loose flakes.

Take some BREASTMILK and massage it into your baby's scalp to help loosen up the scales. Gently brush/comb it through in a circular pattern to lift the scales and then shampoo. If you do not have access to breastmilk, you can also try:
1. Lavender
2. Vaseline
3. Olive Oil
4. Lansinoh
5. Tea Tree Oil

Works great. Put baby oil on his head during bath and let it soak. At the end of the bath with an extra soft toothbrush gently scrub back and forth and in circles.
K.
The key is to leave it on long enough to soak well, and to do it often, every other day or so.

I don't know if I responded to your post last time, so if I did, I apologize for repeating myself. My daughter had cradle cap really bad, and though it didn't make her hair fall out, it still looked disgusting--like someone had smeared peanut butter on her scalp! I used baby oil and rubbed it in, let it sit for a few minutes, and then used a soft brush to scrub, and a comb to chip away at it...it took a LONG time (weeks) to get it off. And because I was really worried about damaging the soft spot on her head, I never touched that part...she had a cradle cap spot there for a long time! But it finally did go away.

I swear this works... 'Gentle Naturals- cradle cap care'... you can get it at Target in the baby soap section, the bottle is green. Put it on your sons head after his bath and let it sit for a min or so, then take one of those little tiny baby combs and comb it out, for spots that don't come off with gentle combing- gently yet firmly move the teeth, kind of in small sawing motion, over the cradle cap- it is crazy how much comes off... you may have to use a wet washcloth to clean it and repeat. I know it's not as gentle as those little brushes- but those did not work for me. Both my sister and I did this for our kids and it totally got rid of it. Hope this helps!

sorry I didn't see your request before or I would have posted a response. With both of my kids, when the cradle cap thing showed up, I simply took the soft baby brush you get at baby showers, and brushed their scalp in circles while they were in the bath. I didn't try any oils, just their baby shampoo. I didn't think to use oil. But, at any rate, it goes away. If it doesn't, you may want to ask your pediatrician what works best. I learned my trick from one of those "what to expect" baby books. Good luck.

I tried leaving it alone on my first daughter but it just never got better. Finally at a year old I used baby oil. I would put it on at the beginning of her bath, let it soak in, and then used a fine tooth comb (the one we got from the hospital) to remove the scabs from her scalp. I had to do it multiple times and her hair looked so greasy during that time but it worked in the end. I'm now doing the same thing with my second daughter.
