Cracked Nipples from Thrush

Hello! My 8 month old son and I have thrush. He has white patches inside the sides of his mouth and my nipples are pink, itchy, burning, and cracked! I am treating both of us w/ gentian violet and treating my nipples with APNO (all purpose nipple ointment) that my ob/gyn prescribed. I am also boiling everything that comes in contact with his mouth and sterilizing my pump parts after each pump session. It has only been a couple of days but the pain is almost unbearable. I want to know how long it takes for my cracked nipples to heal - please tell me I don't have much longer to endure this pain! Thanks so much!

you are doing all the right things. Are you taking a probiotic? What about oral antifungals? I know my daughter took oral dose of Diflucan and I took the pill form. Didn't work that well for me so I went on to the gentian violet route. Try to let your nipple dry and get some sunlight on them. Sounds crazy, but I laid in a sunspot in my room with it all hanging out and got some sun. I had read somewhere that it helps. Good luck. It totally sucks. Also, might try to cut out processed sugar right now. yeast love sugar! Oh, I also used some neosporin. Not sure if that is okay or not, but I was miserable. I wiped my nipples off before nursing.

It'll heal, but yes it hurts.

Another tip: do not wash or scrub your nipples when bathing, with soap. Just let the warm water flow over it.
Soap will dry it out... causing more cracking.
Also, try applying breastmilk to your nipples. Its supposed to help healing.

For your baby's Thrush, I had a prescription... maybe that is what you need.
It can recur... or not go away quickly.

You can also try applying Lasinoh breast cream.... this helps the cracking.

If anything, call your Doc... and ask. If your current treatments are not working... then tell your Doc.

I have been there too. I consider the Lansinoh cream a must.

That "pink, itchy, burning and cracked" symptoms all say you have the thrush too. Since thrush is a yeast-like infection caused by the fungus Candida albicans, you have shared it with your son. It doesn't quite matter where it started but you both have to follow through with the medicine (oral nystatin is often prescribed by pediatricians and an Rx for you too).

Remember to wash your hands OFTEN! Wash, or wipe down, all toys that your son puts in his mouth with a diluted bleach solution (I think it is one-quarter cup bleach to a gallon of water). Apply the Lansinoh directly after breastfeeding and often during the day.

You might be ready for a different ob/gyn! especially if you don't want to take the time to education the one you are seeing.

Hang in there and good luck,
D.

I'm so sorry for you! The only thing I did was use gentian violet constantly. I don't remember it lasting any more than a few days. Even after symptoms are gone, I would continue using the violet to make sure nothing gets re-infected.

Good luck!!
