My 17 month old son is obsessed with the number 2. He counts "2" toys, leggos, books and/or handheld foods very clearly. Eats only 2 crackers at a time (literally counts them as I hand them to him then stacks them, says "twoooooo!" and eats them together.) I try to get him to get to 3, 4 and 5 but he just takes everything else away to make "2" again. Anybody else's kid do this?? how did you get them to move onto 3, 4 and 5?

weird little guy. totally adorable, but i was just curious. not a biggie.

What can I do next?

This made me smile. Kids are silly, aren't they? Sounds like you have done a great job helping him count everyday objects. Everything comes in 2s. Hands, feet, eyes, socks, etc. Keep up the good mommy work. :) Maybe do some finger plays counting all 10 fingers? Or find the books about the 5 llittle monkeys. Singing works if you ask me.

My son does this. He has counted to two since he was 12 months old. He is 19 months old now and still hasn't moved on to 3, 4 or 5. We think he might grow up to be a dance instructor because he's constantly counting 1,2...1,2...1,2. It is very cute. My son is also obsessed with letters. He can identify most of the letters and yells them out when he sees them.

I can just picture him yelling twoooooooo!!!! How sweet. It's very normal. He is still very young and you are obviously doing an excellent job.

At that age "two" often simply means "more than one" to them. Very normal, he's little, just keep counting with him. :)

He's only 17 months. He's doing good to grasp the 2 concept. Let him rest right there other numbers will come. Also remember he will be turning 2 soon and that's a special number.

You'll soon find out kids don't always do what we want them to and when.
We'll give it more thought than anyone else. My son did the same thing and at the time you think he'll never move on. He will, when he is ready. Just continue counting with him over and over. He's very young, too. Good luck!

Probably just the first of many weird phases! They go through stuff like this all the time but you won't read it in any "manual"! LOL It's cute!

Don't know how to get him to move on, but our son separated everything by colors when he was two. I mean everything! During an easter egg hunt, he would only pick up green eggs, he had a basket full. My other two were never like that. I thought it was kinda strange and wondered if it was normal. Turns out it was and he is. They just like what they like and to the extreme at that age evidently, he's not like that now. He'll move on when he wants to, I'm sure. Best wishes!

My son who is 5 and can count pretty high, is obsessed with the number 5. He wants 5 crackers , etc. What ever age he was, was the number he was obsessed with.

My daughter is 24 months and she counts 1, 2, 5. She knows 4 but not when she is counting. We count when taking stairs or other stuff and it is always 1, 2, 5. Like you say, totally adorable.

My son will be 2 soon, and he usually counts "3, 3, 5" :-))
He has said 1, 2, 4 etc. several times and even counted up to 5 twice or so, but I guess he loves 3, so he is stuck with it now.

From my experiences with my own two children and the kids in both of their classes at Day Care, I think it's great he knows his numbers already.

I'd embrace the stage because he'll quickly be out of it.

For our son it was "blue" - everything was blue for months.

All you can do is to continue to expose him to the concept of counting, and eventually he'll get it, and you'll miss the cute stage he's in. He sounds really bright, and it sounds like you're doing a great job of teaching him.

Our son's only been using the word 16 for about 3 months now - he refused to acknowledge it until just recently despite being almost 4.
