Could It Be Growing Pains?

My four month old has been crying all day for no apparent reason. And when he cries, it lasts at least 30 minutes each time. It started today. He also started eating more today so I'm guessing he's going through a growth spurt. My husband thinks that he's in physical pain/discomfort due to the growth spurt -- he said he's able to calm him down by squeezing and massaging his limbs firmly. Has anyone had an infant cry significantly more than usual during a growth spurt? Or is this something completely different? Never had this happen to my daughter so just curious.

What can I do next?

Doubtful. Not in a 4 month old. There are a few common *invisible* ailments I would check out before even considering something as unusual as growing pains:

Teething
Ear infection
colic
dietary change/constipation

Growing pains?
Not likely at 4 months.
Their whole first year is a major growth spurt - they roughly triple their birth weight.
Could be teething.

Babies have crying jags sometimes.
It can mean anything from 'feed me', 'change me', 'I need attention' to 'I'm bored and tired', 'I hurt', 'I'm scared' - it's hard to decode sometimes.
Some kids have a regular 'witching hour' (which is never JUST an hour) where they will cry for several hours the same time every day.
My Mom tells me I cried non stop the first 6 months of my life.
They said I was a colicky baby.
For babies with colic no reason is found for it but they do out grow it eventually.

I'm glad the baby massage works.
Try taking him for a stroller walk in the fresh air - they usually love it and it tires them out.
A teething ring or something to chew on might be a good thing too.

Did you introduce solids/cereal? Maybe they're not agreeing with him. Could it be gas or colic? I don't think growing pains are possible at 4 months.

While infant massage can be good, I'm concerned about your husband 'squeezing his limbs firmly'. That sounds painful to me if he doesn't know his own strength.

I doubt it. I'd guess dietary changes upsetting the digestive system (gas, constipation, etc.), a virus or ear infection, or possibly teething. If he's responding to massage or "squeezing", I'm thinking it's comforting as swaddling would be, or he's got some muscle aches related to a virus like a flu too mild to show other symptoms like fever

If he's eating and pooping and sleeping, you can probably let it go for a day before going in to be seen - but a call to the doctor or nurse doesn't cost a thing.

I never heard if growing pains in a 4 month old. I think a trip to pediatrician is called for.

Growth spurts are when babies sometimes suddenly seem ravenous - they need more milk - and it takes a few days for breasts to adjust if you're nursing. All my babies went through this, and would cry ... a lot more - because they were hungry. For us it happened more around 6 weeks and then 3 months. They just were more fussy and hungry (harder to soothe) and it would last about a week until their milk needs and my supply adjusted.

I haven't heard of growing pains as in limbs (agree, nice your husband is trying to be helpful).

Sounds to me like ear trouble, teething, hungry, gas, or some other dietary thing ... but who knows, best to rule this out with your pediatrician. It isn't typical - no, not that I have heard of. If it's solids you're into - it could be an intolerance, allergy or sensitivity. if you've introduced something new - I would eliminate it and see if that helps.

Good luck :) I hope it passes quickly

I doubt it's growing pains at 4 months. My baby did that when he had an ear infection. I would go to pediatrician to make sure all is OK.

Is check with your Pediatrician. At 4 months it could be a number of things.

I doubt it
Call your pediarician.
Sounds more like something could be upsetting his belly.
Or it could be more serious.
I'd definitely call the doctor.
