Could Dairy Be Making My Son Act Crazy?

Hi Moms,

My son has been sick with a bad cold with lots of coughing all week. He has had a hard time staying asleep because of it. He is usually a sweet and helpful boy. He is almost 3. He also has no dairy in his diet since I eliminated it almost a year ago because of chronic constipation and eczema. Over the last week he has eaten about 1/2 the cheese off pizza he had 3 times. He has had no appetite so I was happy to see him eat something and I thought why not try out a little cheese and see if it bothers him. No constipation or exzema but I would not be exaggerating if I told you he has been acting crazy! He screams and cries, does not want to leave the house or change out of his pajamas. He screams NO!! constantly and its like my son has been replaced with a very angry person. It is scaring me a little. He is happy if we are on the couch hugging and he did play nicely this morning. What is going on? He is on azithormycin but I didn't see any side effect that would cause this.

What can I do next?

It does seem like the dairy in the cheese made him behave like that. Take away dairy again and if his behavior improves, you will know dairy is the culprit. I have heard that dairy can do this to kids. Talk to your doctor, too. I think this will be trial and error for you. Good luck.

Yes, it absolutely could be causing it. My daughter has issues with wheat, gluten, and MSG. I can definitley tell when she eats them. It makes her a totally different child.

I read about this in a book recently, titled "Whitewashed" by Joseph Keon. Interesting info about dairy and health. And dairy can definitely have the type of effect you're describing.

My son acted that way with dairy and my other son acted that way with a gluten allergy. It's good that you figured it out. My two sons (I have 5 kids) also had tourettes syndrome symptoms related to food allergies too.

Stop feeding it to him for a while. Wait until he is feeling well again and maybe give it a try. If it happens again you will have your answer.

Yes, yes, and yes. With my son, tiny trace amounts of dairy in his diet produced every symptom of clinical depression in the book. As long as he's strictly dairy-free, he's a wonderfully happy little boy and uncommonly responsive and helpful for his age. Good for you for catching this!
