Costume or Accessory for Father Daughter Dance - Theme, Greek Mythology

The girl Scouts at our school have a Father Daughter Dance every year. The theme is Greek Mythology. Some of the Dads are not happy about the expectation that they where a costume. I don't think they necessarily have to but I wanted to throw out ideas for them that aren't all out Togas ;-). I thought they could wear Leaf wreathes on their heads and then whatever they happen to be wearing. Can anyone think of anything else? All suggestions welcome, from tame to a little more crazy. I'm one of the Brownie leaders so want to throw a bunch of ideas out when asked to fit the fun and comfort level of those asking. Maybe someone could tape a globe to their shoulder and be Atlas?

Added: We can't change the theme an older troop is putting it on for the school, but I'll take notes for when it is our turn :-)

What can I do next?

Oh..... super easy if you stick with the Gods, since they all had attributes which translate very easily into dress, much harder if you're trying for say Odysseus, or Jason, or Achilles. I mean, a toy arrow taped to your ankle is easy, but in a dance scenario, it's likely to become problematic.

8 male Gods (7 olympians + Hades)

Zeus - Lord of the Sky, King of the Gods
- Tuxedo & crown
- Flight suit (aka Tom Cruise Starter Kit)
*bonus* Thunderbolt & crown

Poseidon - God of the Sea
- US Navy Coveralls (identical to flightsuits, but dark blue instead of green)
- Sailor Uniform
- Khaki's & Keds
- Boardshorts
*bonus* Trident

Hades - Ruler of the Underworld
- Black
- Judges Robes
- A stuffed dog (3 headed would be best, Cerebrus, but most Hell hounds only had one head)
*bonus* "helm of darkness" ... I would think a Darth Vader helmet would be grand

Hermes - God of thieves, medicine, travel, & messenger to the gods
- Jogging Suit & Sneakers
- Surgical Scrubs
- Burglers outfit (think black, and black, and black. Extra points for grappling hook or mission impossible gear)
*bonus* Wings on sneakers or Caduceus

Apollo - God of the sun (drove the chariot across the sky), medicine, writers, and music
- Racecar driiver's suit, or motorcycle leathers
- Surgical Scrubs
- Rock Star getup
*bonus* sunglasses, guitar, arrows

Ares - God of War
- Camis/BDU's/Fatigues
- Dress Uniform
*bonus* pick a weapon, any weapon

Dionysis - God of wine & madness
- Alcohol paraphanelia (martini glass, wine glass, etc, beer hat, etc.)
- Psych Patient / hospital gown

Hephaestus - God of smiths and inventors
- Lab Geek / Tech Geek
- Mechanic

Or thought of another way-

Surgical Scrubs:
- Hermes (god of medicine, theives, messenger to the gods)
- Apollo (god of medicine, writers, the sun)

Fatigues/ BDUs/ Camis/ Dress Uniform:
- Ares, god of war

Jogging Suit
- Hermes

Tuxedo
- Zeus

Flightsui (Tom Cruise Starter Kit)t
- Apollo
- Zeus

US Navy Coveralls (identical to flight suit but deep blue), Sailor Uniform, etc.
- Poseidon

Racecar Driver's Uniform
- Apollo

Tuxedo
- Zeus in particular
- Any other god with appropriate color or prop

Burglar Clothes (think black, and black, and black)
- Hermes (god of theives, medicine, & messenger to the gods)

etc.

Chronos: Keeper of Time (wear a pocketwatch, wear multiple watches set for different time zones)

Normally I don't cite Wikipedia for a resource, but they do have quite an extensive list of mythological figures. Since the theme is GREEK Mythology, this list may help you ensure people don't show up wearing costumes from ROMAN mythology. >.<

Bring a trident and be Neptune, or tape gold wings to their feet and be Mercury! Wear gold and be Apollo. Wear all black and be Hades. Carry a bow and be Cupid. There are tons of possibilities. Hey, hand the guys a plastic cup full of beer and tell them it will be just like college... ;)

HI Mama-
along with the laurel wreath, they can wear the metal wrist bands, or upper arm bands, sandals, a sash, etc. The wealthier Greeks were a people of comfort and pleasure. The gods were adorned and magnificent. Golden or silver accesssories, (stick to metals for the men), such as bangles, crowns, solid necklaces, ..... also, instead of toga, think tunic. Wear mid calf to knee high boots, pants that can tuck in, and longer tunic. Accessorize with a belt, a sword, a knife, a laurel wreath, and a long sash/cape. More 300 or Clash of the Titans style.
Does that help?
Good luck!

i would go with the uber father-daughter combo, zeus and athena. you'd want something majestic for zeus, so maybe a purple robe with a laurel wreath or kingly crown, carrying a lightning bolt sceptre. athena would wear a regal robe and carry an aegis (a shield with a medusa head), and maybe an owl on her shoulder.
i would avoid hades, since he doesn't have any children. but any of the others would be easy too. a bow, or a lyre for apollon. trident for poseidon. blacksmith hammer for hephaistos. spear for ares. wine bottle for dionysos.....or a leopard skin might be better if you want to avoid the booze theme. then for the daughter, artemis could carry a bow, demeter a flowering branch or wheat sheaf, hera a scepter or peacock feathers, hekate or hestia a torch or lamp, aphrodite flowers or sea shells.
i think it's a great theme! fun and easy.
for the no-costume dads, a head wreath would be fine. they're easy to make and not a PITA to wear.

I like the laurel wreath idea. Maybe you could have some paper and wire to make them there if people forget the costume part. I took Latin in high school and we had a Saturnalia party every year. We just did togas over our regular clothes with a twin sheet and a safety pin. There was some playful fun over who would have the wildest print sheet. When I was a Girl Scout we had an annual father-daughter square dance and everyone could wear something western style (or not). The kids loved to dress up, the dads not so much.

We were all Greek Gods for Halloween this year.
My hubby wore a Hawaiian shirt , Bermuda shorts, and took some fishing net and draped it around him, then he wore flip flops and a crown with shells glued to it. Voila--instant Poseidon.

My son wore a leather skirt I found at the thrift store, I cut it up for those Roman guard skirts and we had leather wristlets, (Legolas from years back). He wore a white tee and a red cape and sandals, instant Mars.

One daughter had a white dress, get one from the thrift store, even a wedding dress. THen Gold or Silver Lame makes a cape. Make a headband wth ribbon from Micheal's or Joann's, and you have Artemis or Athena. THe girls wore flip flops.

Our theme this year was Red Carpet Hollywood.

Eh...change it to a Hawaiien theme or Dancing Underneath the Stars, otherwise they have to dress like Greek Goddesses which is kind of hard to pull off.
