DH & I are celebrating our wedding anniversary this weekend & his 15 year old neice is going to watch our 2 girls (3.5y/o & 2y/o). His MIL will be there to help (she lives across the street) Do you think $15 an hour is reasonable? She'll watch them from about 5:30p - 11p, kids going to bed around 8pm. And do you continue the $15 when the kids are sleeping? or is it reduced? I have no idea.
thanks so much :)

$15/hour is very generous for someone that young! You should pay the same after the kids are in bed, though. (unless it was an overnight and you negotiated a lower rate ahead of time.) Personally I'd pay $9 or 10/hr, and if you want to give her more because she's your niece, call it a bonus.

We live in Oak Park, and the going rate is $10 for an adult who drives. I don't know the going rate for kids under 16.

$15 is twice the min wage - and no taxes!!

I have a friend who works a a daycare and makes $8/hour...

I know city rates are higher - but that is a lot of money for a 15 YO.

My daughter makes $7.00 to $10.00 a hour. So $15.00 is very generous. It is the same no matter if they are sleeping or not.

We pay the same whether kids are awake or sleeping. For 2 kids, $12-15 seems to be about the going rate in the city for someone older and experienced. I pay our local high school gal more like $11/hour - so I suppose it matters whether you are paying the niece, the MIL, or both. If it's just the niece I'd probably do more like $11 or $12/hour, but she will surely not complain with $15!! :) Enjoy your anniversary!
