Cord Blood Donation

I have had a hard time finding a place to donate my baby's cord blood to. I had first thought about banking it but in doing some research and looking at pricing, decided against it. My thought is if this could help someone else I would much rather do that than just have the hospital (Plano Presby) throw it out. Apparently they are not set up for donating, only banking. Any suggestions would help.

What can I do next?

I donated my 1 yo. blood cord Call the The Texas Blood Cord Bank at Medical City Dallas at ###-###-####. They will send someone or a kit to the Hospital you deliver at. Make sure to tell your OB your plans so they know what is going on that you are wanting to donate and not bank your babies blood cord. I think you are great for looking into donating it offers so much hope to children and adults who are really sick!!!
Good Luck

I had my last child three years ago and my understanding at the time was that the Red Cross in Texas is not set up to bank cord blood yet...other states do this..like Connecticut where my 2nd child was born. They actually send you a kit to give to the doctor and the doctor's/hospital know the protocol to collect the cord blood.

Texas is a little behind in this regard....

An oncologist might be able to help you as well.

If you don't want it and want to donate-- contact the Banking place and see if they take donations or know of a company that can get it from them to deliver to the donation place

I'm so glad you asked! This information is not widely available. My OB didn't even know that donation (vs. banking) was a possibility. Here is the site that I registered through.

There is quite a bit of paperwork to complete, but they were very helpful. As far as collection, I believe it is essentially the same process as banking, so the OB who delivers you will follow the same procedure.

Good for you for donating!
