I'm considering the copper IUD for birth control. Anything with hormones seriously messes me up. I'm wondering what your experiences are with the copper IUD. I've Googled it -- but would like to hear any personal accounts of pros and cons.

What can I do next?

I've had it for about 2.5 years and I love it. Like DVMMOM, my periods are really heavy for 2 or 3 days, super tampon every couple hours (and the backup pad). My is also a couple days longer, typically just spotting, but longer nonetheless. And, like Dana T. I produce a lot more mucus. I just started wearing a panty liner everyday. Those are minor inconveniences to me because I don't have to think about it and hormones weren't an option for me.

I've had one for almost 3 years and I've had no problems at all. I like that I don't have to think about it and it's good for 10 years. By the time it's ready to come out I probably won't need anything anymore. Having it implanted wasn't real fun and I was pretty sore for a day or two after - but I could take extra-strength Tylenol and soak in the tub and that helped (think worst period cramps ever). The only thing I've noticed is when I get my periods, they are heavier. My period doesn't seem to last as long, but it's just heavier when I do have it - as in soak through a tampon in a couple of hours and have a pad too for back-up. But the worst of that is maybe 3 days. Otherwise I don't have any other complaints.

I've had mine for 8 1/2 years now and I love it!

Other than the day or two of heavy bleeding, I haven't had any of the problems listed below - I can't tell it is in, insertion was only a "pinch" with no lasting pain, my periods aren't as regular as when I was on the pill, but are usually within 3 days of when they should be. And as great as the "no periods" that the Mirena sometimes turns into sounds, I'd be afraid I was always thinking I was pregnant each month!

I love mine so much that when I hit the 9 1/2 year mark next spring I'm getting it replaced with another one that should last me into menopause.

I had it while breastfeeding and had no adverse reactions except that I could feel it. A doctor told me that was untrue since there are no nerve endings in that area, but it bothered me. Wasn't painful or irritating, but I could just feel it was there. I had it removed about 6 months after I got it.

However, I now have Mirena and love it. Can't feel a thing and my period has disappeared.

So, it may have been poorly inserted the first time, but otherwise I liked it. And I didn't get pregnant!

It was horrible! I too, get screwed up with hormones, so I thought that the copper IUD would be the way to go. Boy was I wrong. I bled non stop for most of a year, cramped like crazy, and gained a good 20 pounds and had horrible bouts with irritable bowel syndrome. The PA at the OBs office kept trying to get me to give it more time, but after a year and 3 months, I gave up. Had it pulled and replaced with a Mirena. I wasn't thrilled with the Mirena, but at least my periods were relatively normal.

I have one and love it. Can't feel it. I have noticed that I produce a mucus like substance. Nothing bothersome, but I'm slicker then I was before.

I hope that wasn't TMI.

I've had mine fore about 9 months now and am still irregular, but I think that's a combination of having had my son 9 months ago. Things are still off.

It was really not fun being put in. Ouch! But by day two all was good.
